How to Use Makeup Colors to Complement Your Skin Tone

Let’s admit that it’s been many times when we walk through a store and think that we have finally found the perfect makeup product but ended up feeling all disappointed again. Well the reason why this happens is simply because you’re not considering your skin tone. It turns out that there’s a whole color theory lying behind a flawless makeup look. So it is very important to have certain knowledge about how to use makeup colors according to your skin tone. To me more specific, you need to master in the color wheel.

How to Use Makeup Colors to Complement Your Skin Tone

Now to master in the color wheel you need to ensure you know well the undertones. Thus there are two types of undertones: warm and cool. Warm undertones include colors such as red, orange etc. In cool undertones on the other hand, you may find green and blue. Note that there are also colors that are somewhere ”in between” and can go either way. Such colors are yellow and purple. For example red-purple is considered warm while blue-purple is cool.

Another thing that you need to know is what colors complement each other. Well this is very easy. Check out the wheel. Each color has an opposing one on the other side of the wheel. The color on the opposite side of each is the one that perfectly complements it. Red and green for example.

Well now that you know the basics it is time to see how they work for makeup.

Foundation

To choose the right foundation, first of all you need to determine your skin’s undertone. The latter either can be warm, cool or neutral. To find out your skin’s undertone you need to do the vein test. According to this test you have to look at the veins on your wrist. If they’re blue then you have a cool undertone. If they’re green you have a warm undertone. If you can’t clearly see whether they’re blue or green then you’re probably ”neutral”.

Concealing or Using a Color Corrector

Well it all depends on how dark are the stains on your skin. You can either use a color-corrector or stick with a concealer. To achieve the desired effects, opt for colors that are opposing to the color on the problem area in order to cancel it out.

Blush

Choosing the right blush color plays an essential role when it comes to creating a flawless makeup look. To reach the desired look you just need to make sure you’re using blush with the same undertone as your skin. Note that if you’re ”neutral” you can practically go for any blush color. Now undertones should be considered for contouring and highlighting as well. However the golden rule of makeup application says that warmer tones must be used for highlighting and cool tones for contouring.

Eye Color

Stick with colors that perfectly complement the color of your eyes and show off your natural beauty. Thus for blue eyes colors such as brown, copper and bronze seem to work great while for hazel or green eyes purples and rosy tones are ideal. Note that for brown eyes all colors are good. So if you have brown eyes you can consider yourself lucky.

Lipstick

As for lipstick choices all we can say is that colors that have the same undertone as you are the best option you can go for. Thus if you’re ”cool” then you might go for blue-based red or fuchsia, or pinky nudes. Warmer tones on the other hand, work great with corals, peachy nudes, and orange-based reds. For a deeper skin tone brown-based reds, berry shades and plums are just perfect.
