The person you’re replying to wants a man with Tourette’s Syndrome who had already offended them because of his disability to get up onto a stage and talk even more to issue an apology. What absolute nonsense. In this case, he’d likely be unable to not cause more offence, especially with such pressure. And the idea of forcing a disabled person onto the stage of a global televised event to apologise for their ticks and “hurt caused to all black people” is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in a while.

Tourette’s can be absolutely debilitating, but I think if you have a condition that makes you shout the N word because you saw black people, you should probably use some discretion and situational awareness.

Tourettes can be exacerbated by anxiety and excitement. No reason to believe he does this when he “sees black people” in general, but the setting may have made his tics worse than usual.

I really feel for the two presenters who had to hear the slur live and also, as a white person, I don’t want to tell black people how they should feel about it. But at the same time, I agree with those saying leaving him at home would have been going massively against the spirit of the film and Tourettes awareness raising in general. Also, for all the people saying it was worse because it happened during Black History month, it isn’t Black History month here (ours is in October, and I only know it’s Black History month in the US this month because I’m terminally online).

The amount of people saying they feel empathy and turning around and saying absolutely ablest things is insane to me. It’s saying “no offence” then insulting you to your face, just cause you say no offence doesn’t mean your not saying something offensive. It almost feels like some people are saying that people with tourettes and people of colour can’t co-exist, either one has to leave which is just insane. It sucks that lindo and MBJ had to hear that, but that doesn’t mean Davidson should be publicly shamed and punished for something entirely involuntary. If anything BAFTA is at fault for (presumably) not properly briefing the fellow attendees of the possibility of this situation and properly educating them that it is not an intentionally harmful piece of hate speech and would be completely involuntary, and for not cutting it out of the broadcast.
