I drove 50 minutes to get Grater’s from The Fresh Market. I picked up black cherry chip and black raspberry chip. Both incredible flavors. Quality is on point, the big chunks of dark chocolate are addictive. I’m now mentally planning a trip to Cincinnati to get my hands on a fresh scoop or two. 😂

You should … not sure where you are, but I think they have scoop shops all around the bigger cities in that area, in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, etc. I saw the Fresh Market in a YouTube video. Looks like a great selection.

I think that’s one of their more popular P-S flavors, so you should be able to find it at any Kroger if you have one nearby. Some of their others are worth a try, too, if there’s a sale – their black cherry raspberry chip isn’t bad if you can’t get Graeter’s and their coffee is solid for a mid-range coffee flavor (like Haagen-Dazs).

I’d agree with this. Probably would have the BR lower and move up the HD cherry vanilla but otherwise this is similar to my taste. Cherry Garcia is still the GOAT

I really love rum extract — it doesn’t taste a thing like rum, but it has a certain je ne sais quoi. I’ve loved it since I tasted it in spumoni. Cherry Vanilla is great, but I ranked it lower just because the new H-D gives me the same thing, just trading some of the cherries for chocolate (a trade I’d take very day). I definitely go back and forth on the top cherry flavors — I think that one wins for me partly on an emotional level. Good ice cream can do that!

Not enough … thankfully I pawned off some stuff I don’t like that much (like the Tillamook). That said, it’s filled now with half-eaten pints from all these taste tests. I’m going to need a few weeks to do some spring cleaning to clear it out. Don’t worry though … I have one more coming for Mardi Gras, then I can review some of the flavors that have been hanging around that I haven’t shared.

I know we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but if I were to pick solely on container design, the Graeter’s cherry chip is just so tempting. Yet it’s not even the superior Graeter’s! So this is a useful reminder that the design is simply packaging. Anyway, thank you for this very enjoyable experiment and post. I’ll be picking up the garcia later.

Graeter’s just updated their packaging to that style, and not that their pints were ugly before or anything, but my gosh, I am LOVING the new look for them. They’re a great balance of honoring the Graeter’s legacy and catching the eye with something new, and IMO they stand out in an incredible way when I see them on grocery freezer shelves. (I think they’re probably getting around to having all their pints in the future with the new packaging, so black cherry should get a glow up too!)

Yeah, I’m not sure if all of their packaging is updated yet. I got that pint of cherry with my holiday Black Friday order and their holiday flavors were all in the new packaging, as was Black Raspberry Chip, but some of the older flavors still had original packaging. It’s much better now as it doesn’t all blend together (an issue I find with B&J and B-R especially).

Graeter’s Black Cherry Chocolate Chip clears all for me, which makes it surprising that their Cherry Chip is so obviously inferior, but I agree with you that it is down the list. Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia would be 2nd among these for me. It’s been hyped heavily over the years and quality has been slightly chipped (pun intended) away at since the Unilever sale, but it’s still timelessly good imo.

Yeah, they need to stop messing with something people love… it’s penny-wise and pound-foolish. I like that Graeter’s keeps doing things the old ways instead of trying to make an extra buck, and customers reward them with loyalty.

I feel like flavor and overall ice cream quality are very different. The PS Amaretto Cherry Cordial has the best flavor IMHO, but the ice cream itself isn’t as good as some others

Yes, definitely. I try to consider both for the score … The amaretto and rum ones really work for me flavorwise, but the ice cream texture/quality isn’t on the level of the premium ones. The Cherry Chip has amazing texture and ingredient quality. It was just slightly less exciting on my palate compared to those. So they all scored in the 8 range (very good), while the ones above 9 (amazing, for me at least) score on both flavor and overall quality like butterfat, overrun, more expensive ingredients.

Some other random notes from the taste test … **Most cherry mix-ins:** None of these were exactly bursting with cherry pieces, but I think H-D Cherry Vanilla had the most. Umpqua had a decent amount for being in a bigger container (usually the death of mix-ins). After that, I’d guess Cherry Garcia and Graeter’s. **Least mix-ins:** I think I saw like two cherries in Tillamook. Bridgeman’s was also sparse. **Possible pairings:** Cherries Jubilee and Amaretto Cherry Cordial for a boozy duo, the two Graeter’s as a contrast between dark cherry and maraschino, Jeni’s and VL for tangy and sweet, Cherry Garcia and Cherry Vanilla for two standard-bearers. **Other options:** I scoured the aisles looking for good options, but I did pass a few by that may be of interest to some: Signature Select’s Black Cherry Vanilla at Safeway (seemed like a H-D dupe), Blue Bunny’s Cherrific Cheesecake, Blue Bunny’s Cherry Chocolate Chunk and Breyer’s Cherry Vanilla (“frozen dairy desserts”), Halo Top Cherry Chocolate Chunk (light ice cream), Ben & Jerry’s Non-Dairy Cherry Garcia. **Dessert bars:** Häagen-Dazs’ Cherry Dark Chocolate and Yasso Cherry Chocolate Crunch if you’re into novelties. **I wish we could try…:** I have seen these online, but not available here: Publix Black Jack Cherry and Chocolate Cherish Passion, Hudsonville’s Black Cherry and Traverse City Fudge, Perry’s Cherry Pie and Cherry Panda Paws, Brusters’ Black Cherry and Cherry Vanilla, Cedar Crest’s Black Forest Cake and Cherry Cheesecake.

Hudsonville’s Traverse City Fudge is one of my favorites of their flavors, and they are my favorite store-bought brand. I love the amaretto. I found some Perry’s Strawberry Cheesecake on sale last night. If their Cherry Pie is similar it would be excellent. Plenty of pie crust chunks, great flavor and texture ice cream.

Hudsonville, Perry’s, Brusters’ and Publix all have a ton of flavors I’d want to get — lots of fruit and unusual stuff besides the vanilla-chocolate-caramel-cookie dough loop. And now I have to add this Cedar Crest to the list. They all need to get on Goldbelly.

Banana would be an interesting one … I have a few I love (Graeter’s Banana Chip now, H-D’s limited Bananas Foster all time), but some I absolutely hate because they try to use too much real fruit and it gives it an icy texture (Crank & Boom, Salt & Straw).

I’m a total glutton for anything with maraschino cherries! PS’s Amaretto Cherry Cordial is a top 5 all time flavor for me and I love the Graeter’s Cherry Chip as well!

I prefer the Luxardo and Maraska ones if I’m making a dessert or drink at home, but the classic version does work pretty well in these flavors. I added a little rum extract to a scoop of the Graeter’s Cherry Chip and it’s even better. I think I might order some amaretto flavoring, so I can try that, too.

Ben and Jerry’s chocolate cherry Garcia (always limited release, last saw several years ago but never actively look for it) was the greatest. Now I just get Trader Joe’s frozen cherries and mix it into chocolate ice cream.

Semi-homemade is often the way to go! If you get into candied and brandied cherries, amarena, Luxardo or amaretto cherries are also great in ice cream.

Sadly, that’s mostly true, but it is supposed to have cherries. I could only find like two. If she doesn’t mind a texture like a whipped mousse ice cream (as I said, sort of like half-thawed Cool Whip) it might be fine because you could get rid of the cherries pretty easily. I’m surprised there isn’t a cherry flavor without mix-ins, but I think that’s true of most fruits. Peach and raspberry always seem to have something. Only one I can think of is strawberry. You can find a few without those icy chunks — I just had Clementine’s delicious Strawberries and Cream, for example. Also, I think Van Leeuwen Strawberry is chunk-free.
