During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Busy revealed that the nickname started as “Busy Lizzy” and then became just “Busy”. In 2010, Busy told US magazine that she wants people to realise that she is not fellow actress Bijou Phillips, nor is she related to her.

Phillips was born on April 1, 1980, in Greenwich, Connecticut, and is the daughter of John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas and his third wife, Geneviève Waïte, a South African model, artist, and actress.

Acting breakthrough (2000–2005) Phillips appeared with Kate Hudson in Cameron Crowe's semi-biographical musical drama Almost Famous (2000). The film was a critical success and received four Academy Award nominations. She also was the cover model for the April 2000 issue of Playboy magazine, posing nude in that issue.

Her breakout role was in the independent film "Black and White" (1999), a compelling drama about racism. She also appeared in the critically acclaimed drama "Almost Famous" (2000), as a teen groupie to an up-and-coming 1970s rock band.
