Olivia Dean is currently trending due to her prominent presence at the recent Grammy Awards, which has generated significant media coverage and public interest. Her attendance alongside well-known artists, as highlighted in the BBC report, places her in the spotlight during one of the music industry’s most prestigious events.

The speculation surrounding her possible win for Best New Artist, as noted in an unspecified source, adds to the excitement and intrigue about her career trajectory. This potential recognition at a high-caliber event like the Grammys often leads to increased public searches as fans and newcomers alike seek to learn more about recent developments in her professional life.

Moreover, the visual elements captured in events such as the candlelit vigil where she was present, as reported by The Guardian, further fuel interest in her activities and contributions to contemporary music. Such striking imagery combined with her association with high-profile musicians helps elevate her visibility, resulting in a heightened volume of online searches.

Last man to win it was Chance The Rapper in 2017. 2019: Dua Lipa 2018: Alessia Cara

I know it gets brought up all the time for the category but damn that was an egregiously late “new artist”
M

I really think they just need to bite the bullet and rename the award to like best breakout artist. We all know that that’s what the award is supposed to be and it would spare us the annoying annual discourse about some 10 year veteran getting the award

The Grammys? Change? Thanks for the laugh 🤣 I’d like to see it die out so something better can take its place in the future. There’s too much that has needed to change for decades that just doesnt
E
eimihs • 26 points
Tbf, The Grammys (while they have A LOT to fix) have embraced change in recent years more than a lot of other major institutions in the music industry. The music industry hasn’t given them much to work with in terms of newer MAINSTREAM artists however so while they’re “boring” choices, they often end up rewarding acts that have been established for awhile

It may be true that the industry hasnt given them much to work with in the mainstream (I am not qualified to know this), but they need to work on their internal structure above all else. Better panelists that understand the actual genres for a start, more categories would be ideal too. Completely off topic and I am yelling into the void at this point, but I just wish it wasnt so disrespectful to the genre I care about. The fact that a hardcore/punk band, which is decidedly and objectively **not** metal in any conceivable way can win best metal performance is insane. With a song that is 30 seconds of a single note synth followed by under 2 minutes of some hardcore/punk no less. I’m fine with subjectively something I dont care for winning an award as long as it fits the criteria, but objectively it doesnt fit.

The Pitchfork Music Awards? Best new Artist is Bugz Da Blap from his breakout song in a limited area with over 21,000 streams, “Slyrup”

I don’t disagree, but for context I think their ruling is something along the lines of you can only be nominated 3x for the award, so people naturally wait till they have a big year to campaign for a nomination. Also breaking out is part of the definition of the award: “First of all, eligible artists must have achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and impacted the musical landscape during the year’s eligibility period.” And they have to release a minimum of 5 singles or a full album. There’s some other criteria, but it’s basically breakout artist.

and throw away all the talking points this naming creates among the public? nahhh

From a UK perspective the one that stands out to me was Dua Lipa, whe was definitely not a new artist in 2019, here her summer 2017 album went to number 3 and it had a number 1 single in New Rules. But I’ll concede that for non-US artists, the Grammy’s are really only about breaking the US.

As an American, I agree, Dua Lipa had some big songs in 2017

I still remember Glass Animals being nominated in 2022 despite their first single being a decade old at that point lmao

It’s such a dumb name for an award. Sabrina Carpenter had five albums over ten years before she broke-out with Short n’ Sweet and got nominated for Best New Artist. Just call it Breakout Artist already.
I
Icy-Mortgage8742 • 1 points
she was also on her 3rd and last SUBMISSION for best new artist, so yeah that one was a real stretch, but to me it was very obvious that island would be lobbying for chappel in exchange for getting sabrina pop vocal album and solo performance.

Most of these are. Alessia Cara was popular in 2015. Dua Lipa was popular in 2017. Meg thee stallion was popular in 2019.

Coloring Book also wasn’t an album, it was technically a mixtape, according to Chance. Officially speaking, much to his chagrin, “The Big Day” is officially Chance’s “debut album” (*years* into his career). Eligibility is incredibly weird with the category. You can actually be nominated up to three times which feels like a contradiction in itself. The only hard disqualification that I’m aware of for a first-time submission is that you can’t have previously won a Grammy.

Chance the Rapper lol. Oof Anderson .Paak shoulda won that year

Alessia Cara winning over SZA is mad in hindsight lol
J
johnny_charms • 10 points
I really don’t know why the Grammys gave Alessia that award. It was outrageous then and remains a stupid decision now that SZA is on her 7th Grammy award.
E
eimihs • 7 points
Yeah that’s clearly the worst pick in the last 10 years when you compare their careers
T

I literally have not heard a single song of hers outside of a retail background music playlist. In my head that was all she was, a slightly better than average “store singer” that no one actually listened to in real life. When you have to listen to pop slop for 8 hours a day and you haven’t even heard of 70% of it you start making weird preconceptions of the artists.
H

I was a big fan of Alessia back then and even I was confused over her winning

Kind of revisionist. There was a time when people liked and respected Chance.
P
Prize_Ad_129 • 10 points
For sure, but calling him a new artist in 2017 when Acid Rap came out in 2012 is egregious, especially since Coloring Book in 2016 was also “just” a mixtape
X
xbox360sucks • 5 points
I agree with you on that. I think Anderson .Paak had a similar timeline though.

How was Dua new in 2019?

Honestly, I had to look back up what happened during 2018 to have warranted her being nominated for the 2019 awards, and it took me a second to figure it out. “In the United States, Dua Lipa debuted at number 86 on the Billboard 200 chart dated 24 June 2017. It departed the chart the next week, however, it re-entered at number 162 four weeks following. In February 2018, the album spent its 32nd week on the chart where it reached a peak of number 27 with 15,000 units sold. ” The “Complete Edition” rolled out in October of 2018 as well, which added “One Kiss”, “No Lie”, “Scared to be Lonely”, &”Electricity” which were all pretty big songs in different places, so I’m sure thats why she was able to score the nomination & win for 2019 for an album that released in June 2017 😵‍💫 ~~It also doesn’t help that 2019 had a fairly weak Best New Artist nomination list imo outside of maybe Luke Combs that year in terms of artists who’ve had staying power~~

I also wondered this and my theory was maybe she did a US Tour in 2018 but no, and she actually toured the US twice in 2017, one solo and one supporting Bruno Mars. So that’s just more points for the 2018 award lol.

I think Todd in the shadows broke down Benson pretty good. “You know what, I like Benson Boone. I’m rooting for him. I like energy. I like his backflips. I’m confident that one day he will actually write a good song”

Leon Thomas doesn’t though. He was my other pick for best new artist.

My husband really liked him and he hadn’t heard of him before his Grammy’s performance. He was so impressed to see a young guy doing traditional RnB, and actually playing an instrument while doing it.

Andre from Victorious?

Kind of crazy to see that him and Ariana became the most known from that show but most of that cast seems to be doing alright, especially considering the shit that went down on that set.

I know Victoria Justice is mad as hell, she thought she was gonna be the next Selena Gomez 🤣
P

Naw I think she’s fine with it. She’s still a working actress, musician, model. She also was also close with Christina Grimmie and was affected by what happened to her a lot more, so after seeing what happened to her and also what happened to Ariana she may have reevaluated exactly how famous she wanted to be. The truly successful person from that era of Nick/Disney is Bridget Mendler who’s most used social network is LinkedIn.

What went down on the set?
P
ProphetPenguin • 10 points
Avan Jogia and Matt Bennett were drunk or hungover quite a bit on set and there’s a few uncomfortable videos from behind the scenes that are out there. Dan Schneider is a fucking creep and tried to use the fact that people from Victorious were getting drunk to pressure Jennette McCurdy and the cast of iCarly to get drunk. Just a lot of really gross things that happened on the sets of Victorious, iCarly, and other Dan Schneider shows that are really awful to hear. Just watch Quiet on Set you’ll see a lot of what went down on the sets of his show. Including a producer named Brian Peck who had John Wayne Gacy as a penpal and who sexually assaulted Drake Bell. Dan really bred an on set environment where stuff like drinking was heavily encouraged but also a lot of things that would endanger a child/teenager

I know Dan Schneider sucks, but didn’t know how extensive it was. Wow.

I googled Leon Thomas rape allegation and I only found someone with the same name being found guilty. Can you site a source for Leon Thomas iii being accused of rape?
