The NFL has so many anti-consumer policies. It’s insane they still have customers. I had the craziest call back at DirecTv. This lady gets on whispering like she’s in a hostage situation – her husband is down in the basement audibly screaming at a 2nd agent. He’s mad they can’t watch the game. They *planned their pregnancy* around the season. She’s hushing her newborn, while husband rages out in the man cave. And shes asking politely to just turn the game on please. Tears in her voice. Please? They has done everything right. They had the expensive NFL Sunday ticket package ($480 today, $300 back then), everything should work. But the NFL has a “Black Out” policy… You see if you live close enough to the stadium, and they don’t sell enough live, in-person seats, they *black out* the game from customers they feel could have made the trip in person. Anyone they consider within driving range…. … that’s real policy. Imagine trying to explain that to this customer. I was making like 50 cents above minimum wage to be a therapist to victims of the very thing they seek joy from. What a weird capitalist hellscape nightmare world. Non refundable, of course. Of course.

So… the issue is that the NFL licenses the exclusive rights to broadcast the home games live separately from everything else. Those rights are currently with CBS and Fox, who show the games on their local stations in each city. Being (almost) the only (legally sanctioned) way to watch your local team live is why those rights are so valuable. CBS and Fox pay a shit-ton of money for that. The NFL makes more money (or at least thinks they will make more money) keeping those rights exclusive, but in a way that local people can watch the game for free over the air or with basic cable rather than having to buy a satellite TV package. Some sports teams used to even ‘black out’ the *local* broadcast if the game didn’t sell enough tickets! I don’t think any sports leagues still do that, though, it was wildly unpopular. Edit: I was misreading their story, this must have been back when the NFL was still doing local blackouts like that. I don’t think they do that anymore. My dad is the kind of guy who would get down on his hands and knees, slamming his hands on the floor and yelling during games. He’s the kind of guy who gets kind of sullen and depressed when the packers lose. He’s the kind of guy who works 50 hours a week and then gives tours at Lambeau on the weekend, not because he needs the money but because he loves talking about the packers to anyone who will listen. Not a single person spent any time watching the game instead of being present at the wedding. My wedding (uk) was last year. I hadn’t realised that it coincided with women’s football (soccer) Euro final and the vast majority of our friends aren’t into sports, so i was a little surprised when a couple guests excitedly told me “we won!” during the reception. I didn’t mind much, the event was the whole day and everyone was fully present for the important bits. I thought it was actually kinda neat that women’s football was getting enough attention to be a distraction lol, that’s a very recent phenomenon.

The women’s game really has become important. If you live in certain parts of the country, you will not get people coming to the wedding if a football or basketball game (college and pro) is going on. In fact, I know of the daughter of some friends who got a reception center for like 1/3 the normal price because it was during the local rivalry game between two of the local colleges (UNC v Duke basketball). A lot of people she wanted there said no unless she had the game going. She didn’t really want that. But her husband convinced her to set up a sports bar in a room to the side that people could go and watch while having a drink. They ended up kind scheduling the major events around the game (cake cutting, first dance, etc). And the grooms cake was half UNC half Duke. And once the game was over the party continued on as normal. LA isn’t like the South. The South is Guns, God, and [insert college team]

Hanging out with this kind of people sounds miserable. My parents love Formula 1 and Max Verstappen and will not stop by if it’s a race or training. However for big events like my birthday or if I would ever get married they will just tape it and watch it later. They won’t demand that I put on the race at my house during my birthdays and be glued to the screen. Who prioritizes sport over family or friends??? That’s crazy to me.
