Lindsey Vonn is currently trending due to a recent ski crash that occurred while she was racing in Switzerland. The event was reported by multiple sources, including a video segment from 9News that covered the circumstances of her crash. Given Vonn’s high profile as a former Olympic skier and a prominent figure in the sport, news of her accident has garnered significant attention.

Additionally, reports indicate that Vonn was airlifted to a hospital following the incident, further amplifying concerns regarding her health and safety. This dramatic development has likely contributed to the surge in search interest, as fans and followers of her career seek updates on her condition after such a serious event.

Moreover, there was also a mention of Vonn being included in the start list for the Crans Montana Women’s Super-G, which suggests her active involvement in competitive skiing events. The contrasting news about her participation and subsequent crash has created a heightened interest among the audience, driving the volume of searches upward significantly.

“The race was later canceled after three of the first six racers crashed.” Not a great look

Insane. That’s three people whose Olympic chances are now in doubt because of a shitty course.

I can’t help but be reminded of the 1998 Olympics in Nagano when skiers complained about the course. Ill never forget three brutal looking crashes. One guy had to be airlifted. The most “famous” (sorry for that choice of word) was Hermann Maier’s crash…mostly bc he somehow recovered in time to win two gold medals after it…but that was extraordinary. The courses should have been prepared better

The word “infamous” exists for such cases

Usually when people recognize the username, they tell me about how they always used Ricky Winterborn lmfao I’ve probably gotten maybe 10 or 11 comments on this and at least 7 of them have been “I was a Ricky Winterborn guy myself” lol

I once scored 190,000+ on the half-pipe. Penguin board, can’t remember which rider though.

Infamous like inflammable; the bad kind of famous and the bad kind of flammable
F
Fuzzy_Donl0p • 12 points
well, no lol. infamous and famous have slightly different meanings. inflammable and flammable mean the exact same thing (what a country!)
J
JefferyGoldberg • 1 points
Inflammable and flammable also have slightly different meanings. Flammable means if it is contact with a flame or a certain temperature it will burn. Inflammable means it’s fragile and can combust on its own.
J

I thought flammable was the bad one??

Reminds me of the bobsledding course in Vancouver. Competitors complained about that corner and were brushed off until that poor kid came around and flew off into that metal pole, dying. It’s a stain on my country, terrible event that shouldn’t have happened.
D
DionBlaster123 • 32 points
Nodar Kumaritashvili was his name. He was from Georgia (the country, not the U.S. state) and was 21 years old when he died. I am writing this here bc it has been 16 years and I want ppl to remember him.
V
VanbyRiveronbucket • 5 points
I remember a picture of the metal pole he hit… it was right next to the run… with 1” thick pad wrapped around the pole. Yeah, that didn’t help.
D
DieFichte • 1 points
The slope and general course they raced today has been on the FIS world cup calendar several times before. Notable winners in the past include one Lindsey Vonn 3 times. She might have been familiar with it.
I
itsjustmo_ • 10 points
Yeah, I remember that. And it was around the same time as the skiing deaths of Sonny Bono and Michael Kennedy. It made it seek even more negligent because these were pros who know how to handle themselves.

We were sitting in a pub during the day, and the newspaper called the pub wanting some quotes for their story,… my buddy “Breathe deep for the air he no longer needs, more air for me.” This quote made the paper….LoL

And it’s two weeks out. She’s 40. Whatever recovery it is won’t be full. This sucks.

It’s fucked that this might have stopped her amazing comeback.

Sucks so hard, everyone can’t pretend to care about skiing now.

People don’t watch Winter Olympic sports when the Olympics aren’t on? OMG color me shocked! Obviously more people care when it’s on TV and actually happening. Am I supposed to keep up with the summer off-season?
H

Maybe they just have empathy ?
L
liftingshitposts • 54 points
At risk of asking a dumb question, don’t the skiers get to slowly go through the course and assess it before full send? Wouldn’t their experience allow them to know how risky it is?
P
praecipula • 58 points
Along with the other replies talking about how these skiers leave very little margins, the ski slope itself can change over time, particularly when you consider that there is *a* fastest route, and the fastest skiers will all take that route. This will compact the snow to become icy. In addition, the course will change with the temperature of the day, the amount of sun, etc… So even though it’s the same course, it’s not “the same course” if that makes sense.
R
Raft_Master • 8 points
It looks like the issue here was actually that it was snowing so hard. Counterintuitive, but you typically don’t want fresh snow on a race course, espically a downhill course. You want packed powder/ice. Lots of high level race courses are actually injected with water before the race to make them firmer.
L
Lockhimuptoday • 3 points
Yep, and in practice they go full speed.
A
ActionFigureCollects • 1 points
Watching downhill skiing is both thrilling but also gives me massive anxiety for the racers at the same time.
R
RealFirstName_ • 14 points
Idk enough about this situation specifially, but thing about racers is that if they’re told to go fast, then they go fast. Especially at the elite level, unless most of the competitors are protesting the event because of safety, or the organizers shut it down, a racer is going to race. The athletes job is to compete, and its up to the organizers to make sure the competition is safe. It’s not like “safe” conditions make what they’re doing safe.
L
Life_Membership7167 • 11 points
Yes. Former racer. That’s called inspection. But it’s still a race, and the mindset isn’t exactly thinking about safety. It’s how to attack and which sections you can get after it. Safety is low on the list. Everyone knows the risks and accept them. The throttle level doesn’t change just because the conditions are bad.
B
BradMarchandsNose • 49 points
Yes, but you also have to remember these people are crazy competitive. A lot of times they’ll know it’s risky but they also want to win. Sometimes the organizers need to step in and put a stop to it so that nobody even has an opportunity to get hurt. Edit: upon further review, in this particular scenario, it seems like it may not have been an issue with the conditions. Crashes also just happen sometimes, it’s an inherently risky sport.
R
Redfish680 • 1 points
The course is what it is, which helps to make sense of the run. As others have mentioned, the snow conditions can change in minutes – sun pops out, previous competitors rearranging the snow layer, etc.
D
DieFichte • 13 points
> a shitty course The course was good according to other skiers that made it down. Visibility was still alright when Vonn crashed, the delay from her crash and the other 2 dnfs would have caused the visibilty and snowfall to be even worse for later skiers, so they canceled because of the snowfall increasing.
