Tbf, this is Sean Payton’s offense through and through, so keeping Lombardi around if he was a good helper wasn’t really a big deal. But by all means, keeping a talented young mind in the building for another year is the right move to make. Getting new voices and ideas in the offense can only help.

From what I read during our hiring cycle last offseason, they grind tape and develop game plans because the HC playcaller doesn’t have the time for that detail work. So they don’t call plays in game, but they do contribute to the sequencing and the preset early game plays, and obviously help supervise the other offensive coaches. I don’t know how accurate all that is, but that’s what was said when I was trying to figure out whether to be happy about our hire.

I read this somewhere else but at least for Payton, Lombardi would watch tape, help develop the offensive game plan against the different defenses, put together lists of plays for Payton to call for different situations during games. Basically do a lot of prep work each week for the game while Payton was having to focus on all facets of the game.

nah, they don’t have limits in that way, it’s just that you can’t promote someone to a named coordinator in order to block them from being hired away. You can only have 1 named coordinator in each phase

They’re allowed a 2nd interview if they already had a 1st interview. So the Bills couldn’t because they didn’t interview Kubiak earlier during WC week when the Seahawks had a bye (because the Bills of course were still playing…). But the Raiders can.
