Sean McVay is currently trending with over 20,000 searches largely due to recent media coverage highlighting his longevity as a head coach in the NFL. A prominent article from NBC Sports discussed how McVay has become the second-longest tenured coach in the league, drawing attention to his accomplishments and position within the sport. This news has resonated with fans and analysts alike, prompting a surge of interest in McVay and the Los Angeles Rams.

Additionally, the impending NFC Championship game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks has likely contributed to the heightened search interest. As a significant playoff event, fans are eager to learn more about the teams’ dynamics and coaching strategies, particularly from a notable figure like McVay, who has garnered attention for his innovative approach. This key matchup captures the interest of many football enthusiasts.

Furthermore, a sweet personal touch was added to the coverage with an article from Athlon Sports that featured a feature on McVay’s wife, Veronika, and her affectionate nickname for him. Shanahan’s only weakness at this point is whatever voodoo land or substation juju the team has that has them dying year after year. Whenever the Niners are healthy they’re a Super Bowl team without question.
D
Disgruntled_Lemming • 30 points
My hot take is that Shanahan hasn’t been *just* unlucky in this regard. He undoubtedly has, but there’s been some mentions floating around that his practice philosophy is to “build the callus”, which means a lot more full speed practice. With the roster being on the older side overall, and many of them dealing with past significant injuries that leave them vulnerable to new ones, I don’t think you can discredit that the role that practice philosophy may be playing.
D
downtimeredditor • 10 points
With his injury record like at a certain point he needs to change something
B
bauboish • 2 points
As a team whose two most successful coaches have been under the Shanahan tree in Kubiak and Ryans, I’ve never gotten the impression that players get injured under those regimes more than others. I also don’t think other coaches under this same tree has had this stigma. If there is something to it, it has to be Kyle Shanahan himself, cause his coordinators get poached left and right and they don’t seem to have these issues with their new teams.
D
Disgruntled_Lemming • 1 points
That’s possible. It could be that they are and they’re just luckier, or they tend to go to teams with younger rosters that are better equipped to handle more intense practices. Or maybe the branches of the coaching tree tend to take a different approach, it could be a combination of things.

Just found out their strength and conditioning coach has been with the team since 2018
L
LiftingCode • 9 points
That’s not true. Mike Nicolini is their head S&C coach. He was in SF as an intern in 2018 and an assistant in 2019/2020. He left and spent 2021-2024 with the Jets as their head S&C coach. He just came back to SF this year as head S&C coach replacing Dustin Perry.
D
downtimeredditor • -1 points
I was referring to Dustin Perry who was an assistant strength and conditioning in 2018 then was their S&C coach from 2019-2024 and was just promoted to VP of player health and performance

Shanahan just pulled 12 wins and playoff berth out of his butt with half his entire roster hurt and Mac Jones starting a chunk of the season. That should buy him a couple of years. It impressed me, and I’ve always thought he was overrated.
S
Sillysolomon • 12 points
We were so hurt and all the dead cap (around 100 million or so) that best we could do was guys 5th string & practice squad.
O
oftenevil • 14 points
Bro it was insane. Our WR1 straight up quit on the team and stopped taking calls from the coaches and organization during training camp. Like…how do you even begin to account for that when the season is just getting under way? I can’t say enough positive things of the shitstorm that Kyle just navigated this year. We didn’t have our QB1 for half the year. Didn’t have Ricky for half the year. Didn’t have Kittle for a third of the year (and lost him halfway through our wild card game). Lost Nick Bosa the first quarter of week 3. Lost Fred Warner the first quarter of week 6. Lost our 11th overall rookie DL to a torn ACL in week 10. Like, those injuries alone would cause *most* teams to win maybe 4 or 5 games, tops. There were a slew of other injuries on top of those, and we won **12** fucking games and a road playoff game against the defending champs.
S
Sillysolomon • 7 points
Kyle pulled off some black voodoo magic. No way would a team win 12 games when WR1 quits, lose 2 all pro defenders, back ups are in and out, first round pick gets hurt. Receiving options in and out. Back up QB has to play hurt. All in all a great season.

ggbouffant • 4 points
That’s just a symptom of poor drafting over the last 5 years. Outside of Purdy in the 7th round, it’s a LOT of misses. People talking about Shanahan’s job safety when they really should be talking about Lynch’s …
S
SkinNoises • -5 points
Plus Shanahan has to deal with Brock Purdy as his QB while McDermott had Josh Allen, Shanahan is doing more with less while McDermott was doing less with more.
L
LonelyandDepressed27 • 2 points
Why are you writing that like he’s dogshit lol. We’ve still got a really good QB, like I get Josh is sick but it’s not some insane drop off like #1 QB in the league and some random middle of the pack #15 guy.
D
donutgut • 0 points
Purdy is borderline top 5 now. The guy would’ve been a mvp candidate if you project his stats to a 17 gsme season (over 40 pass tds)
S
SkinNoises • 0 points
You think Purdy is borderline top 5 when he’s not even the best or second best QB of his division 😂 Purdy is not even top 10 QB in the league. Keep dreaming with your hypothetical projections.
D
donutgut • 1 points
Thats a crazy take. I have Stafford above him but Darnold? Lmaoooo. Give Purdy Jsn and see what happens. He went crazy with Aiyuk. Keep dreaming? yawn. ok. He was tied with Stafford this year for td rate with little help. The guy who will probably win mvp… He also had a better year in 2023 than Maye in 2025 with a 113 rating and has the highest rating in NFL history. Hes had subpar help from wrs the last two years due to injuries. At some point he’s gonna get help from wrs again. Don’t bother mentioning fucking Jennings either.
S
SkinNoises • 1 points
All I see are excuses from a biased 49ers fan 🥱
D

Hes def gotten to a stage where he can tough out with a backup a few games which he couldn’t in 2020

totally different owners and individuals handling it, has literally nothing to do with eachother lol
L
Lorjack • 19 points
I wouldn’t say that, NFL reporters are always mentioning how owners pay attention to what other owners are doing. It does have influence on them. That said I don’t think kyle is anywhere near the end of the road with the 49ers. He may not have won any SBs but he made it there twice, something Mcdermott can’t claim
B
Bolinas99 • 5 points
> totally different owners and individuals handling it, it’s a low bar to compare the Yorks to Pegula, Stephen Ross, Jimmy Haslam, etc that said, the Yorks *do* have a track record of hilarious incompetence from 1998 when Denise basically stole the team from Eddie D, to 2002 when they fired Mariucci and replaced him w/ Dennis Erickson, to the ultimate reality-show-caliber move of firing Jim Harbaugh because they felt Trent Baalke was gonna help them “win with class”. the most likely outcome here is the they fire Lynch and the scouts. Everyone in the know is well aware that coaching isn’t the problem here. Kyle may have input when it comes to the draft and any smart owner will make sure that gets taken away. FFS look how well Seattle & the Rams are doing- talent evaluation, the draft, are compartmentalized to *actual experts* who know what TF they’re doing. John Lynch is no scout; he’s a retired safety who was also a good commentator on CBS. He was also friends with Kyle; in late 2016 Jed York decided that he wanted his GM & coach to get along (given all the b.s. Trent Baalke pulled) so he acquesed to hire someone Kylke would work well with. Thing is Lynch has *no business* evaluating talent; that should’ve become evident when he passed on Mahomes (among others) in the 2017 draft in favor of some dude he took a class with at Stanford (Solomon Thomas). the common sense solution here would be to give Lynch some other role in the organization and keep Kyle as HC, while *completely revamping* the scouting dept. Jed and his sidekick Paraag Marathe are more likely to take this measured approach rather than do the whole Pegula/Abe Simpson thing and fire a perfectly good coach because they decided to act like a know-nothing fan instead of an actual owner.

such a big mistake not doing this when Adam Peters was looking to be a GM. Should have moved Lynch to some exec role, or player outreach and given Peters the GM job. All the late round hits for us were Peters.

Franchise QB, highly rated draft class that went to their first NFC championship game since 1991 and first playoff wins in 20 years? A couple starting OLinemen, 2 for 2 starting CBs, starting RB in the 7th, starting DT. He’s showing that our inability to find starters in the draft and not going for positions of need (Oline) was not his doing in SF
D
donutgut • 1 points
I wouldn’t call Daniel’s a franchise qb yet. Even before his injury he didn’t look good this year. Now Kliff is out, who knows going forward. I can see him being Kyler. As of right now, hes the weakest qb in his draft class. they won because Goff had like 5 ints and choked.
D
Dispinplush • -17 points
So how long should his leash be? How many more years without a Super Bowl to show for? Over under 5 more seasons?
L
LordBaneoftheSith • 26 points
As long as he’s coaching at or near this level, you never ever fire him.
D

Even 15 more seasons of this level but with no Super Bowl wins? 🤯

Lmao don’t get me wrong I’d take that over the last 20 years too but sometimes something’s gotta give if you can’t get over the hump and are just known as the new marry schottenheimer

lol Schotty is nowhere near Shanahan as a HC. He had a 5-14 postseason record and never sniffed a superbowl as a HC. Shanny has a 9-5 postseason record as a HC and has been to multiple superbowls and conference championship games, just hasn’t won a Super Bowl, yet…

Well “at this level” would imply 3-4 more #1 seeds and like 6-7 more appearances in the NFCCG, with maybe 2 or more appearances in the SB over the next 15 years. Even if he never wins the SB in those 15 years, that would be still incredibly impressive and more success than ~28+ teams would see in the same span. It’s A LOT easier to get worse than it is to get better. If they fired him after all that I wouldnt be surprised if they became the next Cowboys not making the NFCCG for 35+ years after
L
LonelyandDepressed27 • 3 points
For as long as he keeps the team competitive. Super Bowls are hard to win, plenty of players never win one. Plenty of coaches never win one. We’ve been spoiled by dynasties that go in and do things out of the norm then (dumb) fans think the goal is to emulate that when in reality teams need to be fishing for consistency. Not everyone can luck into a Brady or Mahomes. Even if they are that good it’s still really fucking hard – Rodgers, Manning, Brees. Tell me those guys aren’t all good enough for multiple rings (I know the corpse of Manning was dragged through the finish line a 2nd time). The best way to win a SB is to give yourself chances, as in making it to the playoffs and Super Bowl enough times that you eventually win. Guess what the 9ers have been doing under Shanahan/Lynch? Consistent playoff team and a lot of deep runs. Unfortunately the injuries have hampered more consistency but when the team isn’t a mess they get far, shit this year we *still* went far when broken to hell and back. It’s wild to me that fans of bad teams dogpile on the dumbass mentality a lot of our fans have because they should know better than anyone how fucking shitty it is to see your team be terrible. Like it’s fun in the “I have no expectations” sense because you know you won’t compete so you can just enjoy the sport and your favorite players, but when you’re actually at the top and in a favorable position… why ruin it? What the fuck are the chances we stumble into another great coach as good as Shanahan or better and we win a SB compared to the likelihood of hiring another Tomsula or Kelly? So long as he remains as good of a coach as he is, I want him to be HC of the 9ers. The only things I wish he would change are his practice intensity, go from a 10 to a 9 and his approach to the OL (which their OL coach is partly to blame). Also, get a new S&C team that focuses more on flexibility and pliability, need to stretch more to help mitigate those soft tissue injuries but that’s a Lynch and York thing.

I completely agree with everything you said. I’ll just make one minor tweak — they do need to look at how they can overhaul their drafting. We haven’t had much success in last 4-5 years and we need to do better in drafting to get our next set of stars / pro-bowlers.
N
NoooNotTheLettuce • 2 points
I would argue if you have a coach that is taking you to the playoffs every year but not able to get over the hump, it’s not the coach that’s the problem. A great coach can get a bad roster to the playoffs but even the best coach can’t get a bad roster to win the super bowl. Every situation is different but Shanahan is so far down the list of reasons why SF doesn’t have a super bowl that firing him any time soon would signal a rebuild more than a team trying to compete

> a multi billion dollar company full of hundreds of professionally trained individuals To be fair, outside of players, a large amount of them are nepo-babies or hangers on. Look at the number of family members with positions on teams. Did some of them learn the family trade? Sure. Just like nepo-babies do.

The fact that you were down voted for saying this is hilarious. Nepo babies have reddit accounts and get their fee fees hurt.

Typical Raider fan comment. How about we keep the good employees employed and fire the shitheads who are in charge of the draft and scouting. Kyle Shanahan is an elite coach. You don’t fire him unless he does some stupid shit that makes the news and embarrasses the organization.
D

Lmao very typical of me😜 those Super Bowl teams were really talented but couldn’t seal the deal because of Mr. 28 to 3 lmao, changeout the shitheads but a pencil neck choker will always be a choker

I do think the bills firing McDermott was a mistake, but let’s be real, McDermott isn’t half the coach Shanahan is. Shanahan has gotten so much out of mediocre quarterbacks and rosters that have been decimated by injuries. At this point it’s hard to rule out coaches getting fired, but Shanahan is the type of coach you can’t let leave the building.
