The Balkans were really poor and there was lots of food insecurity so the Ottomans took a “child tax” which meant that families from the Balkans had to periodically give a child to the empire, however often the child was better off especially during the height of the Janissary corps days. It was the first professional army in Europe I believe and the Janissaries became an incredibly powerful political entity that controlled the lucrative coffee trade. They mostly consisted of poor kids from the Balkans sacrificed to become Janissaries as part of the child tax. It was interesting they had to convert to Islam, but it was a version of Islam that was tailored to be compatible with Christianity and included a Warriors code. People had to stay in as a Janissary until they were 40 but then got to retire and usually when they did they retired fairly wealthy and powerful. So if you made it to 40 you kind of kicked back, had a lot of land and were rich. Eventually Turks didn’t like the fact that people from the balkans had all this power so Turks stated being let into the Janissary corps and they practically stopped fighting and just became a powerful political faction. They were initially seen as the Sultans personal army, but they had become independent. So when gunpowder and modern weapons started becoming available one of the Sultans decided to disband the Janissaries and there was a war. Kind of like in Japan when the Samurai were disbanded. It’s all very interesting.
