Oh wow we work in the same field and I’ve usually been good before at coming up with names of places I knew that had open positions. Not this time. Damn AI, or rather the upper management’s expectations of what they think it can do, took a wrecking ball to the market. My own employer is on the opposite side of the country (we were once a local startup, were bought by a big corp, it went bankrupt and sold us to this midsize company) and, from what I heard, wants all new hires to be physically in their area and in-office. I work in immigration law and everyday I feel like I’m bare knuckle boxing with USCIS. I’ll work to get people their Visa’s and help them in anyway I can. It’s rough out there and the administration is changing the rules everyday. And before anyone asks I’m not a lawyer and can’t give advice.

I try. I’m definitely not perfect. But I just try to remember that everyone has lives and family that are more important to them then the work we are doing, and if I can make space for that and help them with their lives, they end up doing better work for me. They’re good guys and they deserve time off to do the things they want or need to do. They work hard and they’ve earned it. And I’ll never get mad at people for standing up to the feds. As a small business owner…skip work, don’t shop at Walmart, whatever. But please don’t boycott small businesses over this unless they’re known ICE sympathizers. Last weekend hurt a lot of us, two weekends in a row of dead sales is bad.

Generally I’ve been avoiding big box stores and focusing local for all my shopping if I can afford to. I recently was able to find some local yarn stores for my new crochet hobby which I was so stoked about. It’s important to still uplift our community and local small businesses even while giving the middle finger to the government. Our local community is what will get us through the storm — MN is a perfect example. Look how people came together and supported each other. Support your local non-ICE sympathizer businesses. Boycott the rest of them and big retailers — not just this weekend, but permanently (if you can)

I am a local small business, and I support the strike and have publicly endorsed it. We will not be operating on Jan 30. Understand that this is a financial sacrifice, and we are doing it because we are dead serious about keeping ICE out of our communities. I do not look down on fellow business owners who cannot afford to shut down. but I have been encouraging them to state they support the Jan 30 call.

I’m a part of a clinical research lab. We stop working, y’all’s drugs get delayed. Although, some staff are taking the day off for the protest; we still need to have a set number of people in-house, including myself. I’ll be there for the No Kings in March though.

Has anyone older than me ever seen a general strike actually work in their lifetime? I hear about them at least once a year because I follow lots of leftists, but the vast majority of people aren’t aware. There’s no noticeable change in any services. I’ll risk my job in many ways if it comes down to supporting what’s right, but calling off when everyone else is going to be there (none of my coworkers said they were doing it at either of my two jobs)? It doesn’t affect ICE directly, but mass civil disobedience and economic pressure gets your point across pretty clearly. It’s an extremely effective tool if there’s enough participation. Trump is sensitive to economic hardship and so are his major supporters.

This strike is paired with a demand: ICE OUT. To participate in the general strike is a SACRIFICE and shows that we are serious about our demand. It also helps us connect with like minded people, raise awareness, and gauge our numbers. A sustained general strike requires preparation and discipline. As the political crisis deepens in the USA, we will see more and more how badly we need to form collective power.
