This is good in theory, except a couple of things. 1) I’ve HATED PG on ball this season. Every time this dude gets the ball, you just know he’s not going to be a swing pass. And like you said, formerly elite and no he’s not good because he can’t attack the rim(and often times, doesn’t even try.) Leading to those damned Melo mid-range jump shots. 2) We’re actually wearing out Maxey even more through his off-ball role. We have him exclusively running off Iverson cuts/staggered screens, and because the screens aren’t even good in the first place even after he catches the ball he still has a contested man and still has to try to drive through contested traffic anyway. So no, off-ball Maxey isn’t exactly the fix-all(in large part because it’s become Nurse’s new favorite toy). The fix to our floor spacing issues is Daryl Morey. This dude has to finally try to bring in at least ONE spot up shooter. Preferably two rotation players who can shoot.

I think the issue is a more predictable one. Nurse has overplayed Maxey to exhaustion as Nurse does to his teams and now instead of the elite 3 point sniper and lightning and quick drive guy he’s just… tired. So his offense starts falling off hard. You can’t conclude much from it except that he likely needs a fair bit of time to get his body back in the prime shape it was to start the season.

I really doubt this. Maxey is a fit, thin, 25 year old in his athletic peak. I seriously doubt he is suffering from exhaustion. Would be different if he was in his 30s or a big man or something but hes not.

Exhaustion doesn’t just mean tired. It’s an accumulation of small injuries he hasn’t had time to recover from as well. At some point pushing through doesn’t make as much sense as giving him a little break. And honestly he’s looked pretty tired on the court lately. First off, Embiid has played 19 out of the last 27. And PG has played 25 of the last 33. Let’s quit pretending they’re missing big stretches of time. And it’s better now when come playoff time they’ll be in every game. Maxey clearly can’t handle the load. On top of that, Embiid has 32 career losses when scoring 30 points or more. Maxey already has 33. You’re not going to sit here and say the Sixers have been better teams in years past. It’s just that Maxey’s 30 points are kind of empty. He’s a phenomenal #2 for a team. Probably the best in the league. He’s not going to dominate at his size though. He’s not Iverson.

Firstly, Embiid in his prime was a top 5 player in the league (really a top 3) so expecting Maxey to match that is extremely unfair. Secondly and most importantly we’ve never actually seen Maxey as a #1 because the team has never been built around him. Judging him as a #1 on teams that were dealing with Joel’s injuries & Harden’s hold out, or these past two years where we’ve had 100+ million dollars of salary on the bench when the entire team was originally built to fit Embiid is dumb. Compared to other small guards in the league (Donovan Mitchell, Brunson etc.) Maxey has not had the same help or level of consideration when building a team around him. We can have a conversation about the efficacy of small guards as a #1 option winning a championship but attempting to have a discussion about Maxey’s performance as a #1 while ignoring the surrounding context is not a good faith one.

Maxey has the MOST total minutes played in the entire league with also the LEAST amount of games played. Hes expected to carry the load when Embiid and PG take off for B2B games and his main support is a rookie albeit one that has shattered expectations but still a rookie. He’s taken a leap both offensively and defensively and has been in MVP conversations for a reason. Im not surprised his averages are dropping and hes not as effective at the end of the game. Nurse needs to a find a way to get him down to 34-36 mins a game rather than 40. If McCain was impactful rn it would’ve easier but Nurse has to find a way.

This is stupid for two reasons. 1. Embiid never deserved that amount of heat he got in the first place. 2. Maxey is a good player, but we all know prime Embiid was vastly superior and several tiers higher as a player. Acting like every “best player” on a team should be held to the same standard lacks nuance and makes zero sense. It would be like criticizing Luka because he’s not as good as prime LeBron lol.

Just want to emphasize the first point because the discourse around Embiid was absolutely disgusting. It’s shades of AI all over again for different, but also the same, reasons. We had a generational talent and a chunk of the fanbase and a massive portion of NBA media, called him: lazy, unmotivated, soft, a “dinosaur”, etc. Joel is a top 5 player of his generation and I firmly believe team building and, to a slightly lesser extent, his body failing him (related to team building) harmed his career.
