Kanye West is currently trending due to his recent apology for antisemitic comments, which he published in an advertisement in the Wall Street Journal. This high-profile acknowledgment of his past statements has drawn significant public attention and led to a surge in searches. The explicit address of controversial remarks often triggers renewed interest from fans, critics, and media alike.

Additionally, an article from E! Online reported that Kanye West expressed being “deeply mortified” in relation to his previous comments. This level of contrition from a well-known figure tends to attract large volumes of inquiries, as people are keen to understand the context and implications of his statements, as well as the public’s response to his apology.

Separate from his comments, media coverage of his social outings, such as a recent movie date night with Bianca Censori where she donned a sheer top and silver tights, also contributes to growing interest. People are often curious about celebrities’ personal lives, especially when they are intersecting with more serious topics.

Wax on wax off. This has happened so many times with Kanye. Bipolar has one of the worst rates for medication compliance. I’d feel bad for the guy but dude you plugged trump. Fuck you

I bet he was peddled with some nonsense of “you don’t need your medication or other treatments” just use these herbs and get hours of sunlight, that should be enough. Being rich does not save a person from misinformation, enablers or manipulation. Same thing happened to Steve Jobs. He was convinced he could be healed from cancer without chemotherapy, look at what happened.

You don’t need that much money to get properly diagnosed and medicated for bipolar disorder. I have a good family support system. I can afford my meds and doctor appointments on my not very good health insurance from work. Shit when I’ve gone off my meds and been unemployed I’ve been able to get them covered through Medicaid once I pulled out of it or reached out for help. All of that assumes I don’t decide the manic stages feel better, then start following delusions, then disconnect from everybody trying to help me intentionally because they’re trying to keep me from accessing the entities that live in the forest or whatever the flavor of the month is that time around. Bipolar sucks because I can rationally say all of that. I’m medicated, I’m sober for the first time in forever, I’m living in transitional housing with an incredibly strong support system and a stable job. But I cannot with 100% assuredness tell you that I won’t find some reason to throw all of that away at some point in the future. You can literally only build as many safeguards as you can manage with this shit and hope that enough of them hold.

Yep. I’ve known people with much less severe bipolar or borderline than Kanye claims (no psychotic episodes for those people), and yet one overwhelming thing happens to their carefully constructed life and it all falls apart. Suddenly they’ve ended their relationship, broken their lease… The idea that rich people can access this perfect psychiatric care is misleading. Yes, accessing many types of medical care in the USA is ridiculously hard and expensive – but psychiatric medication is one of the more affordable things. But it also is far from perfect – whether you’re in the USA or a country with real healthcare. The few people I’ve known with personality disorders that manifested with psychosis were…difficult. These were people with loving families and far from destitute. Regularly seeing psychiatrists – and yet their psychoses would often overwhelm them and send them spiraling. Which then leads to self medication, which then leads to worse psychosis. The hard truth is we don’t have answers for much of that, no matter how badly those people want help. This is not to remove responsibility, just to point out that we have a long way to go before we can actually help some people.

Yeah, bipolar disorder doesn’t care about your bank account. If anything, having a ton of money can make it more destructive. You’re surrounded by people who encourage the behavior because you seem euphoric, confident, and creatively inspired. You have the money to indulge your warped reality and without supportive family and friends who know what is actually happening and care to stop it then it will keep going. The longer it goes on the worse it gets and the harder the fall. If people went into the bipolar subreddit and read the descriptions of our more severe episodes they’d understand much better. Or watch the show Dave where GaTa shows an amazingly accurate depiction of it on screen…helped by the fact he actually has it in real life and is playing a version of himself. Very powerful.

Unmedicated bipolar people do thing they later deeply deeply regret. He hasn’t been in the right state of mind for a looooong time and should be given some grace. Hopefully, someone will convince him to try the new long lasting injectable meds and keep him on them..

greydawn • 4 points
I hope he has supports in his personal life, but I don’t think the general public has to give him grace. He was antisemitic, pro-Hitler, among other things – sometimes things have just gone too far to be forgiven, even if you were ill while you did it.

Chance_Vegetable_780 • 5 points
This is very true. I’m aware of a heartbreaking circumstance -when the person began taking bipolar meds it was as though a fog lifted and they are so deeply regretful for behaviors and damages that they were previously oblivious to. It is deeply tragic and damaged lives. The person is doing what they can to correct things but they’ve lost everything they worked very hard for and almost everyone. And it’s a very long road for them 💔

This is the answer – we’ll get 1-3 years of stable-ish kanye, until he decides he’s fine and doesn’t need them anymore, or some hanger on tells him he can treat his BPD with sunlight and piss or something, and then he’ll be back to making albums for Nick Fuentes.
H
horrible_musician • 51 points
Bipolar disorder sucks so much. I know from experience. But, just do you know, BPD is typically used for Borderline Personality Disorder. People tend to just shorten bipolar disorder to bipolar. Apparently Kanye went especially nutty after his mom died, which makes loads of sense and why it has taken him a lot longer to find any stability if he ever really does again. My mom was a huge part in helping me put things back together on multiple occasions. I would have ended up in jail or on the streets or dead without that help a long time ago.

Also, using weed, alcohol, or other substances with unmedicated (or sometimes even medicated) bipolar, can induce serious mania. I’ve seen it happen a number of times IRL. One acquaintance I knew actually spiralled into paranoid delusions because she stopped taking her meds and was just blazing nonstop. She disappeared overnight, bewildering her roommate at the time because she somehow moved all of her furniture and other shit, and her pets, without waking him and without any indication leading up to it that she was considering such a thing. Apparently, she was supposed to be designing a website for some old people, and claimed that they were threatening to pursue her using their mob connections because she was taking forever with the job. Like… I feel like I wouldn’t have believed this story if I hadn’t been so close to it.

If theres anyone that needs to have a conservatorship, its Kanye.

He keeps having people around him who call him genius and he goes off the meds and goes on a bender. This last one lasted years. What, 5+, now? He’s always been offensive. His comments go really far back. But this one has been worse and more frequent.

This doesn’t make sense in the current political climate. He’s just mentally ill. People say the same thing when he falls off the wagon
M

TBF, he says he’s bipolar, so I can fully believe his unhinged bullshit was the result of that if true. In the ad he says: “Bipolar disorder comes with its own defense system. Denial. When you’re manic, you don’t think you’re sick. You think everyone else is overreacting. You feel like you’re seeing the world more clearly than ever, when in reality you’re losing your grip entirely”. Which is absolutely true. My mom was bipolar (or ‘manic depressive’ as it was called back in the day), and she had some *spectacularly* nutty episodes when she was unmedicated. Who can forget the IRA bomb under my dad’s car? The secret messages from Sooty and Sweep on the TV? Her curious insistence that she needed to become a nun to serve God (she was agnostic and not religious at all, nor was her family). And you could not tell her that she was wrong, or that she needed help. It was everyone else who was the problem, only she knew the truth, etc. I think he acted like a complete and utter fucking plum, and deserves the grief he got, but I can fully believe it was as a result of untreated mental illness. Maybe it’s not, and this is a cynical reversal, but it’s an odd time to pull it, given America’s swift slide into fascism. You think he’d be doubling down on the “Yay Hitler” stuff.

TheNicholasRage • 65 points
I can absolutely understand why people are unwilling to take his apology at face value, and I don’t think they’re wrong for that. That said, I genuinely don’t think most people really get what the depths of a manic episode can look like. I certainly didn’t. When I met my wife, I learned her mother was bipolar, but what I saw from her were mild highs and mild lows. I saw the common understanding of what bipolar is. Then, one day, I saw how deep it could really go. We went over because she wasn’t answering texts. Walking through that door was unforgettable. She’d covered nearly every inch of the living room walls in nonsense writing, she’d shattered six of seven bottles of wine in the kitchen. She was bloody and screaming about conspiracies and plots and it was like she couldn”t recognize or trust her own daughter. It was months until she was put on better medication and made a full recovery. It’s not just happy then sad. It can completely shake the foundation of your reality. What I’ve seen from Kanye lately tracks with what I know now. The difference between my Mother-in-law and Kanye is who they actually had in their life to help, I suspect. A man like that gets surrounded by enablers. It’s really, really sad.

There was also something that came out recently that he may have had a sketchy dentist who got him hooked on nitrous gas, which I imagine didn’t help at ALL
M
Mrs_Toast • 15 points
Yeah – I think it’s really hard to understand unless you’ve had personal experience of that kind of mental illness. My mother behaved awfully during her breakdowns, and that was with friends and family trying to help her. I imagine a lot of people exploited Kanye’s mental illness for their own profit, and you can also get away with a lot more stuff when you’re rich and famous. Maybe he’d still be a terrible person without the mental health issues (I’m not familiar with his music and I don’t know much about what he was like before he started playing up), but his behaviour was certainly pretty recognisable, and I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for him, thinking, “If this is because of his mental health, he’s going to feel like a right prick if he comes out the other side”.

A long time friend was diagnosed bipolar in her 40s. That diagnosis explained SO much. The highs, the lows and everything in between. So sad.

Funny thing about mental illness is I don’t have to like him just because he acknowledges he’s got problems
M
Mrs_Toast • 11 points
Oh yeah, absolutely. Mental illness can be a reason for shitty behaviour, but ultimately for the people witnessing or being on the receiving end of the shitty behaviour… it doesn’t matter. And sometimes it’s genuinely difficult to know how much of a person’s shitty behaviour is down to mental illness and/or substance abuse, and how much is just… them.
T
Thoughtapotamus • 31 points
The issue I think a lot of people have is that he already knew his diagnosis. This isn’t new information. And as a huge celebrity, his words and diatribes cause harm to others. It is a hallmark of this disease to fluctuate and deny the need for meds or help, but he has been in this position so many times, that it comes off as he doesn’t really want to get better. To have the money and resources to put things in place so you don’t harm others, and then NOT do those things, speaks volumes about actually being a good person or just being a selfish narcissist.
M
Mrs_Toast • 15 points
Unfortunately knowing your diagnosis doesn’t always help in treating it. Even when medicated, someone with bipolar disorder can have breakthrough symptoms, including psychosis. Triggers like excess stress, alcohol or drug use, missed dosages and disturbed sleep can cause episodes – and once someone’s in the grip of an episode, trying to reason with them. or to get them to continue taking their medication, becomes increasingly difficult. And getting people treatment when they’re in the midst of those phases is also difficult if they’re not cooperative, even if they’ve made it clear when lucid that they want treatment in those circumstances. I’m not sure what it’s like in the US, but in the UK, the person has to either consent to treatment, or undergo involuntary sectioning (which requires having a supportive family to push for assessment, etc).
H
HillBillyHilly • 12 points
Allow me to add too treatment made even harder by fact that some bipolar *like* how they feel unmedicated. Meds come w slew of side effects and doesn’t help w medical compliance. That’s why new shot will be an absolute game changer.
