They mentioned selling the team a couple years ago and it seems they’ve pulled back. I think they’re more than content collecting the money with no effort. Ted put so much into the team only for it to go to his kids with no plan or structure on how it would run so we get a mess instead.

Any sale of the team was never happening while the TV rights were stuck in limbo. Now that there’s some clarity regarding the TV rights it’s a much more direct path to a sale. Before this it was that the Lerners wanted the theoretical value and anyone with money was going to only offer that actual realized evaluation was. There were legitimate groups sniffing around but they likely all balked at the price. Billionaires are greedy, out of touch, and unwilling to take something for even a smidge less than what they feel it’s worth… the Lerners most assuredly wanted a price as if the team already had full rights well before they actually did.

I know. We do have it better recently than a lot of fans. Things immediately went down hill incredibly fast after winning, though. With COVID we didn’t even really get to celebrate too much. Then we saw all of the best parts of the team get sold off because of our cheap-ass owners. Our fanbase would feel a ton better if we had different ownership. We would take the constant losing better.

There’s a difference between struggling and not even attempting to be competitive. The team is unwatchable, has been that way for years, and there isn’t even hope that things will change until these assclowns sell the team to somebody who cares.

I don’t mind the struggle years, it’s more so how we got here. We had an admittedly old team, but we had strong young pieces. We were basically repeatedly sold this bill of “we can’t have X guy, but it makes way for Y”. Couldn’t keep Harper, had to pay for guys like Trea Turner. Can’t keep Trea, gotta make room for Soto. Can’t keep Soto, it doesn’t make sense because he has no good teammates. We’ll trade him for a haul and rebuild. Had to flip Gore, he’s getting close to FA, gotta get prospects for a rebuild. It’s just exhausting because they discarded all the likable guys, sold us a lie, and now we suck. It’s a lot more enjoyable watching your team suck if you actually have guys on the roster you’re still attached to. If we had just fallen apart as an old decrepit roster we probably would be in no worse spot and at least had some memories for it. This team took Max Scherzer, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and Juan Soto and turned it into… James Woods and some dudes. People will point to the Strasburg contract as proof the team tried, but big whoop. Every competitive team eats an albatross contract every so often. We gave that one out and acted like it was all we had in the bank. Edit: I also think the team has really had a perfect storm of essentially burning all the inroads built during their run and preceding seasons. Beyond the rosters being lame, they’ve stripped the uniforms and branding almost completely bare of the Curly W. The MASN TV saga made it more and more difficult to follow the team as people moved towards streaming and away from cable (games were only available for a long time on cable TV). There’s not a lot of familiarity in the product and management seems not interested in building it back.

Oh yeah Ted was great, but his leadership is the last time we spent any money of consequence. Mark and the family are asleep at the wheel, our highest paid player on the roster last year was Nate Lowe on $9m who we actually DFA’d. it’s a clown show at the top – I’m not sure how much runway a lot of us fans have left for it tbh.

Extremely lucky, like historically so. There were some articles at the time that pretty much confirmed we just go white hot at exactly the right time. On paper we had much better rosters in prior playoff runs. That said, this was a very fun team. They were 19-31 at one point that season. We’re a wild card team, the only series they didn’t have to pull a horse shoe out their ass for was the Cardinals in the NLCS. Every other series they were essentially dead in the water before pulling some theatrics. We’re the only team to ever win a WS without winning a game at home during their run and series.

The funny thing is the return for Soto produced the only productive players of our rebuild (Wood, Abrams, Gore, and jury’s still out on Hassell/Susana). It’s everything else around that trade that has failed tremendously.

The Trea/Max trade for Gray/Ruiz looks worse every year and furthers the chicken/egg question of “is our development that bad or would those guys have been mid regardless”. I will say, Abrams and Gore haven’t exactly met their supposed value either. Gore seems like he could continue to evolve and develop, I don’t think he’ll ever be a 1 or 2, but he’s hard to really figure out. At the very least he’ll contribute in a rotation in a very good team. Abrams is a mess. He’s not a SS and the sooner they fix that the better. He’s an average defender, and he’s average at getting on base. He’s not in any position to leverage his athleticism.

A combination of that team being the last gasp for a really good run in the 10s, that team being older than almost any team in recent history, every vet giving their last bits of good baseball that season, a FO who was incapable of drafting or developing prospects, and an owner’s son who does not want to spend money like his dad did.

Yes but the Nationals didn’t win the WS because of the trade. They won the World Series, waited 2+ years, then traded Soto for the haul of players. The trade had nothing to do with their success prior and therefore doesn’t get added to the equation. But in general, I would trade anybody and everything for one WS, yes.

The Nats were very competitive for 8 straight seasons, and it was mostly due to their pitching. They just could never get past the NLDS. Losing Game 5 became an annual tradition. That 2019 season was pure magic where everything somehow came together. Gerardo Parra walking out to “Baby Shark” and hitting a HR might be where it really started. I live in the DC area, and it was hard to not to enjoy the Nats embracing the whole “Baby Shark” thing that season. Them beating the Astros was the icing on the cake.

You joke, but Eaton actually played a pretty big role for the Nats in that World Series. His game tying blast off of Verlander in Game 6 gets overshadowed by Soto’s bomb that gave them the lead, but it was still a much needed spark for a team that looked dead in the water up until that point. He’s also responsible for driving in 2 insurance runs in game 7 to seal the deal.
