I hate when they use the average instead of the median in infographics like this. The average (mean) is pulled up by the fortunate few who earn much money. Show me how much the average PERSON earns (aka the majority of people), it is easier to compare living standards then. (Edit: typo)
K
Kuenda • 64 points
Yep. Median income gives a more honest picture because it reflects what a typical worker earns. Using medians and expressing costs as a share of income would undercut these comparisons, which is likely why the graphic relies on averages and cherry-picked sticker prices instead.

China Median Disposable Income 2024 URBAN: RMB ~54,000 (~7,800 USD) China Median Disposable Income 2024 RURAL: RMB ~23,000 (~3,300 USD) US Median Disposable Income 2024: ~32,000 USD (RMB ~220,000)

Oh so about 10x? Hence cost of living in China should be about 10x cheaper.
T
TBANON_NSFW • 4 points
….. 32k divided 8k = 4 (URBAN) 70% of China lives in Urban areas. So its pretty accurate to the income ratio in the image = 4x US Rural income is much lower than the nationwide income.

I lived in Beijing for 7 years and am a born and bred in Los Angeles. Comparing those two cities, this chart seems pretty accurate

So the average joe you bump into in LA was on 4k a month? Not just in your circle but the average joe.
Z
Zhong_Ping • 7 points
Is it even possible to live in LA on that? That’s $48k a year. Thats shit money in rural Kentucky.
C
Character_Help2518 • 3 points
Census data on LA, California: [https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/losangelescountycalifornia/LFE305223](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/losangelescountycalifornia/LFE305223) Median per capita income is $44k/year. Median household income is $88k/year. But it would be dramatically different depending on the neighbourhood oof course.
R
Reclaimer2401 • 2 points
That’s after tax, which means something like 70k pre tax. That’s a much higher wage than most people earn, consider thats almost $35 an hour.
I
inefficientmarkets • 2 points
sounds about right. thats probably 65k gross, and thinking about how diverse LA is I think pretty close. People think LA is a bunch of millionaires but forget that its 12 million people in the metro and there are definitely huge pockets of low income. I know people with 5mm+ houses (and multiple ones) and I know people that live at home with their parents + kids
M
mistakemaker3000 • 2 points
Gross or net? What do you think the average Joe in LA is making? I see them everyday at warehouses and talk about income, 4k is a pretty on point average.

This chart is not even accurate for the US. You bots are out in full force. They also use a golf GTI as the compact car example. These posts are brain rot.

Mean is not very helpful when the distribution is not normal.
R
rockybalto21 • 6 points
I believe the post-tax monthly US median is around $3,500 and that of China is around $500

Comparing mid-range for non-essentials are useless also. Can’t compare “mid-range” wine. Need to be the same exact brand and kind of wine. Same bmw vs bmw. Can’t go bmw vs red star.
Z
Zhong_Ping • 4 points
Idk, each country will have culturally relivant brands not available on the other. It’s useful to examine what people popularly consume. What’s the point of comparing a brand that is a specialty import in one and domestic in the other?
S

4k a month is pretty average

Including beer, wine, and soda as 3 of the ~12 things is pretty funny also.

It’s a bit beverage-heavy, isn’t it.

I’m wondering, seeing as their avg monthly income is 4 times lower what they pay for things even though they’re cheap make up a bigger chunk of their income
L
Lopsided_Tiger_0296 • 29 points
Yeah when you adjust for the difference in income, China has more things that are more expensive than the US
C
Character_Help2518 • 3 points
Yes, this is why I’m surprised there’s people thinking this post is about “USA BAD” when arguably it’s the opposite. China wealth disparity can be pretty dramatic especially in big cities. Average food costs would of course be lower, but luxuries would be out of reach for many.
W
Whyamihere173 • 10 points
Yes exactly, while things cost less the average income is also less. I think this is just a fair comparison rater than “USA bad”
T
TBANON_NSFW • 8 points
many of the things are also way more than 4x cheaper though. Like a meal is 10x cheaper. Mobile plan is 9x cheaper. etc etc. They also have pretty much very cheap healthcare, They have very cheap/free public transportation. And they have more free to use things like community outdoor gyms, local community gatherings and playgrounds with toys and parks with food stalls and such.
S
SophonParticle • 2 points
Exactly. If a good or service in China is 50% cheaper than the US but they only make 1/4 the salary then that good or service is more expensive in China than it is in the US.

Why is China so expensive with milk? Are the cows fed gold leaves
X
xivory93 • 137 points
I think the demand for milk is very low as 90% of all Chinese are lactose intolerant

While you’re on the learning train. Lactose intolerance is actually the default for humans. Being able to tolerate lactose is a genetic mutation like the people who taste soap when they eat cilantro
D
deadboxcat • 14 points
That and .99 cent beer. No one is drinking milk.
M
MeowingWolf • 6 points
The majority of Asians in general are lactose intolerant I heard.
M

Am Asian it’s true. Also we don’t like the taste of milk tbh.

Asians are so lactose intolerant that japanese milk is lactose free by standard

Poor cows, feeding a billion people lol. British farmers, ypu know which country to go to.
G
Gloomfang_ • 19 points
Most Asians are lactore intolerant, so there is low demand for it
L
Lulu_The_Lemon_ • 4 points
Precisely, I don’t know any non lactose intolerant Chinese people Edit: person who downvoted me, are you a non lactose intolerant Chinese person? 🤨 Edit 2: nvm my downvotes have been countered 🫶

Yes I am, and so is my entire family from my mother’s side, but I’m not the one downvoting, since I don’t use that feature
S

There are more dairy farms in Wisconsin than all of China. There are also 1.1 billion *more* people in China than the US aka about 4 times the population. Supply and demand is a hell of a drug.
F
frivol • 15 points
Very low demand probably. Few have any use for it.

Hardly any cattle industry.
F
Fit_Swordfish5248 • 2 points
When you look at the wages china is more expensive for everything. But yeah, wtf is up with the milk. Aren’t a lot of Asians lactose intolerant? Maybe not so much milk is produced so it’s more expensive?
W
WastelandOutlaw007 • 31 points
So, given per this graphic, pay in the US is 4x pay in China, anything cheaper than 4x the Chinese price, is a better deal Interesting to see what costs more or less.
H
hawkgpg • 10 points
Average pay is not a meaningful metric. It’s better to show the median income.
