The thing that sticks out to me (and I feel like a good number of people that voted for him this last time fall into this category because they didn’t like that they were required to get vaccinated, and yet have no problem with the government controlling women’s bodies and medical choices under the guise of being pro life) was your comment about being independent and preferring small government, less taxes, etc. what the people who voted that way don’t seem to realize is the average person is still paying the same amount in taxes (only the billionaires got a tax cut) and yet the first thing the current administration did was slash services that millions of Americans relied on calling it waste and fraud. They then took all the money they “saved” and dumped it into the budget for ICE to terrorize people, including American citizens. This government is also stripping rights and free speech. All of our individual freedoms are being obliterated. Maybe pass that along to the people that want a small government, they’ve gotten the total opposite. And it was all in project 2025. They told you what was going to happen. Now he keeps pondering cancelling the midterm elections, so there go more rights.

I agree with you on all points. For the record I have never taken any kind of stance against abortions. I’ve always felt that we don’t care about a child once it’s born here so why are these people so adamant to stop women from exercising rights over their own bodies? You’re right about us calling those cut services fraud. They were presented that way to us and we are the perfect mockingbirds. It may sound crazy to you but it felt wrong to say billionaires are the enemy. To conservatives billionaires are just successful people with drive and ability that worked hard to get where they are. They provide us with jobs and benefits. They shouldn’t be punished because we just don’t strive for greatness like them. I’m not here to make any excuses. I just find myself asking what is wrong with these people and why don’t they see the truth? I know democrats have been asking this for years and wanted to provide any insight that I could. Thank you for your time and feedback.

I disagree about your point on billionaires. In 99% of the cases they are not self made. Musk had money handed to him. He maybe made some wise investment decisions, and he has definitely negotiated some appallingly large compensations packages for himself, but from what I can tell he mostly got where he is by joining a company and then locking out the founders in a hostile take over (Tesla), or cashing in on billions in government contracts (SpaceX – which mostly blows up things). Quite frankly Musk is some of the waste that should be cut from our government spending. Trump had money handed to him. And then filed bankruptcy 6 time while habitually screwing over vendors that he contracted with and then drowning them in court costs until they caved or went out of business. Most (if not all) billionaires had familial wealth and a leg up in the game that 99% of us will never have. Part of that leg up is having a wealthy family that could pay to send them to the best colleges while the average person is saddled with a lifetime of debt to go to an average college. But we can use government money to bail out corporations but not people that took out student loans. Billionaires also do not pass along wealth. Trickle-down economics has always been a lie. The money just gets hoarded at the top. Sure the businesses they run create jobs for people, but their overarching goal is to keep wages low. Wages have not gone up at the same rate as the things we buy but the lie they tell is that if they pay people more the cost of things will go up. Hence why your minimum wage hasn’t gone up in decades. Well sorry to say the cost of things go up anyway. And without wages going up we all just keep falling further behind. Yet you all believe the lie that if you work hard enough you too can become a billionaire. If you made $100 an hour and SAVED all of it, it would take you 4807 years to EARN a billion dollars. ($100 per hour x 40 hours a week x 52 weeks a year equals $208,000 a year. $1,000,000,000 / $208,000 = 4,807.692 in case you want to check my math.) Again that figure assumes that you spend NONE of your earnings. Everyone wanted to decry inflation post covid as the reason everything skyrocketed, and while there was worldwide inflation post pandemic there was also a lot of corporate greed. I think it was the CEO of Kroger that admitted to artificially inflating prices. Record profits without corresponding record sales is corporate greed, plain and simple. And deregulation just furthers corporate greed at the expense of our health and money. Corporations answer to shareholders, they cannot be trusted to do something just because it’s the right thing to do. Look at the EPA protections against pesticides and other toxins that are being rolled back by this administration so that corporations can be more profitable, and yet prices don’t go down. And with the cuts to healthcare and insurance subsidies, people that get seriously ill won’t be able to afford medical care to treat the cancers they get from these decisions. I agree with Bernie Sanders, no one needs to be a billionaire. 100% tax on any income over $999,000 could fund quite a lot of needed services for our country. And then billionaires actually would be helping society instead of pushing us all into poverty with their greed and money hoarding.
F
Fig— • 10 points
I totally agree with you on all of that. I was just trying to speak to what we are taught, how we have been ingrained to feel about billionaires. It is a fact that giving breaks to the wealthy just allows them to hoard money. The poor and middle class spend the majority of their income and stimulate the economy by a far greater percentage. Bernie is pretty amazing and I always thought the fair tax would have worked so well. Following Bernie has helped me tremendously in my journey to be a better human. I would bet that if asked, most republicans say they feel the billionaires are deserving because of those beliefs. Trickle down economics doesn’t work and I believe it’s been impossible to change because of the foothold these billionaires and lobbyists have on the American government. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.

So what are your thoughts on being forced (for the good of everyone) to wear a mask during COVID vs ice agents now wearing masks for “job safety”? Or thinking COVID vaccines are going to cause door to door paper checking vs it actually happening now under another trump regime?
F
Fig— • 13 points
I think ICE agents are the lowest form of human. I think many of them enjoy the job they are doing and that’s how they get their kicks. They wear masks because they know they are doing things that someone will come after them for one day, legally or not. I’m not anti-vax and I worry about the way conservatives handle that with RFK at the helm. I get it dude, I’m the villain here. I’m not claiming otherwise.

This was really long but I appreciate it because I spend so much time trying to understand voting against your best interest. And you’re very thoughtful.
F
Fig— • 9 points
Thank you for that. That was 100% my goal here. The mind works in fantastic and amazing ways. Though it may not seem that way, I have always enjoyed hearing things from another prospective in order to gain better understanding.

What do you think it would take for others who voted for him to have their eyes opened? They won’t read your comment, and they won’t listen to us. Do any of them listen to you? Even a tiny bit? Is there anything Trump could do that would pop their bubble?
F
Fig— • 10 points
I honestly don’t know what would wake them up. It’s as crazy to me as it is to you that they’re still supporting him. I literally spend hours a day sharing everything I see that would make the average person care and I’m pretty sure it’s just gotten me unfollowed or unfriended on social media. I’m a quiet person with not much of a following anyway. I probably post on social media 5-10 times a year ands it’s usually a share for a business or something about animals. The 15+ posts a day about civil rights and injustices may have been too much of a shock for their systems! I think the average supporter worries you’ll take their guns or that you’ll spend all of our tax money on services that highlight issues they believe to be non issues. For instance, they do not prioritize mental health but blame you when a man with mental health issues kills a white girl on a bus. It’s not logical and why I feel like a crazy person for ever supporting any of them. I love seeing that the pope has spoken up. The Be Good movement in Hollywood and even their on air god Joe Rogan has dabbled in speaking truth. I know lots of conservatives that have changed their minds. I truly believe midterms will show a whole new voting pattern. There’s a whole group of people who feel like I do. We don’t have a party anymore because we chose wrong and then realized we are aligned with facists. I’d love to see more people with platforms stand up. Every sheep needs a shepherd. Thank you for your curiosity and time. I think having open discussions with people is the best way to debunk misinformation and find common ground.

C
Chee-shep • 13 points
Sounds like you justified their behavior for a while, but I think that’s a common thing among those raised in religious areas. Justification for things done wrong with their own cherry picking preaching.
F
Fig— • 7 points
You’re absolutely right. But to be honest, I didn’t even need to justify any of this because it was done for me by everyone I know. Ignore would maybe be a better word because checking out is the easy way. You don’t piss off your whole support system that way. Things are very conditional in small town USA.
S
SilverMcFly • 13 points
Dude, I’m sorry but… “Ignorance of the law is not an excuse” is a fundamental legal principle (ignorantia juris non excusat) meaning you can’t avoid responsibility for breaking a law by claiming you didn’t know it existed, as laws are presumed known by everyone for the legal system to function”. You are an adult. This doesn’t affect just you. Your choices and those of everyone you know have “long standing” effects on everyone. Claiming you just got told, as an adult, is absolutely skirting responsibility. You have a phone in your pocket 24/7 it would have cost you *nothing* to Google it. But you didn’t. Now you feel bad. Sit with feeling bad and your own personal responsibility in this.
F
Fig— • 6 points
I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said here. I’m not here asking for acceptance or forgiveness from this community. I’m not trying to alleviate my guilty conscience. I watch the things happening and know I was a part of making them come to life. I wouldn’t forgive me if I were any of the people being terrorized. As a human, I often wonder why people do the things they do or think the way they do. I just hoped to offer a small insight into the conservative mind. It’s possible other people feel this way and just need to hear they aren’t the only ones that have reservations and regrets. That they CAN change their opinions and their vote. That they’re not loyal to a politician. Thanks for reading my post. I know it’s long and I appreciate everyone’s time.

People are just mad and venting. Look at the mess this country is in. I for one appreciate the information and insights. I don’t know what happens next but I’m grateful for everyone who genuinely comes around. We need everyone we can get.
F

It’s completely understandable and I’m genuinely eager to help any way I can. I hope more people do come around. If there was ever a time to stand up for what’s right, it’s now. I truly believe we are on the precipice of something amazing.

I am a Millennial, Independent, and I grew up in a few small towns in different states in the Deep South region and I find “being from a small town” being a bit of an excuse. People don’t know how you voted. You could just not have voted for him and quietly opposed him if you didn’t want to rock the boat. It’s a morals/ values issue. It’s a privilege to be ignorant (unaware) of current events and of politics (especially in the 24/7/364 news cycle that’s accessible from various mediums). While I can understand how you you were sheltered by the bubble of your family and personal circle/inner community, the lack of quality education/ further education, lack of diversity, and how that can insulate your perspectives to where it becomes ingrained “values”/an identity; or that you didn’t want to be a “troublemaker” and outcast, that doesn’t mean you couldn’t privately learn more about policies, platforms, and how it would affect you/ yours, if you didn’t even care if it affected people different from you. Like from a purely selfish perspective, it would have benefitted you to better research policy platforms. You don’t want to lose your support system, but looking into policies/ political platforms would genuinely be making sure your support system is supported by policies, laws, and initiatives that help y’all live more socioeconomically sound, healthier, happier, and fair lives. Next, everything about that man is truly reprehensible and unredeeming. He is the diametric opposite to anything remotely Christlike. He is the living embodiment of the seven deadly sins. How morally/ ethically can you or your family/ friends/ inner community support that?! What kind of values do y’all truly hold? Would still want to be close to people with such abhorrent ‘values’ and perspectives? These are rhetorical questions. Finally, there’s some of commentary about Biden’s presidency and the pandemic that are still repeating partisan/ conservative-esque viewpoints that are inappropriately “both sides”-ing the issues. As a professional in public health and biomedical biology, only one side was politicizing the pandemic (DJT/ MAGA/ Republicans), while the rest of us were trying to combat that irresponsible and dangerous rhetoric. But I don’t want to get into that side conversation. You took your time and effort to write this to a group of strangers, but for yourself, what are you doing to change and “right the wrongs”? Are you involved in any civic engagement/ advocacy groups? Which ones? Are you voting in the midterms? How are you voting? Like…what now and why? Have you considered therapy? I am interesting in learning more about your next steps and your thoughts/ feelings about that. Btw, not snarking, therapy can help you navigate your feelings, thoughts and your relationships with your support system (whether you chose to keep in contact with them, limit contact or go no contact) with a good, neutral therapist.
F
Fig— • 6 points
I appreciate your feedback and you’ve made some valid points. I can say I used my privilege to stay ignorant. Even if I had some excuse I wouldn’t waste your time with it. I never went out with intentions of hurting any group of people. I’m for the under dog, always. I can honestly say that I never in a million years thought we would end up here. I’ve heard from quite a few of you that you all saw it though. I was very naive to believe trump’s idea of enforcing immigration would be the same as the presidents before him. I never believed it would be taken this far. Never would I have guessed anyone to be capable of this. If I gave the impression that I still hold these partisan views I apologize. I only intended to speak to my thought process or views at the time. This was never meant to excuse anything or try to get you to see my side and understand. I’m at the beginning stages of that. I’m calling out friends and family as I go. Ive always said that we can disagree on politics or religion and still be friends. But this isn’t an opinion of policy or a question of rather god exists or not. This is changing the lives of thousands of people and not for the better. It seems far too late to much of you but I’m hoping it’s just in time. They are running all over people’s rights and oppressing as many individuals as possible. I’m not afraid of losing my support system or friends. I’m afraid of waking up tomorrow and missing the things that made this country. The people, the diversity, the freedom of speech, the right to protest, and the civil rights of all people here. My plans for midterm include voting any way I can that ensures the people take their voice back. I’d like to vote on principle and not cast it for anyone Israel owns but I’m afraid that isn’t even possible probably. My husband and I are very new to the activist side of things. We have never once been to a rally or protest but are interested to speaking to some surrounding communities and seeing where we can get involved. We’ve never publicly advocated for any president or politician or used social media platforms to gain votes. Now I seek out the people speaking up. I look for good talking points to use when discussing with people who voted like me. I look for any tool to reach people and change their mind. I’ll use the things I’ve learned and try to spread that information to anyone who listens. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

I read about half of that. It was very long. I appreciate you educating yourself, but I think it’s funny that one of your main points against Biden was “COVID happened.”
F

Thanks for that. I pointed out Covid was not Biden’s fault but like it or not Covid had long reaching effects through all aspects of life in the 2020’s.
M

COVID started in March 2020. Biden was not president yet
H
HeyVitK • 9 points
Tbh, COVID started far before March 2020, but the WHO officially declared the global outbreak as an official pandemic March 11, 2020. But yah, agree, the fact was the pandemic began under DJT’s presidency.
F
Fig— • 6 points
You’re right but things didn’t change where I live in March. It was 2021 before I was affected in any way. We didn’t know anyone seriously ill with Covid. There’s no apartments where I live. We don’t have gated communities with 6ft between our houses. We have a couple gas station, fast food spots and a grocery store. The only change to our grocery store was senior citizens were invited in an hour early. Hardly anyone wore a mask. I can only speak to my experience and the rhetoric shoved down our throats. As I’ve said, I’m not here to make excuses or plead my case. I just hope to offer some insight to how a portion of people who voted for Trump felt. Not to excuse it but to shine a light on it and maybe make a few more people stop and think for themselves. Or at least think for their neighbors we put at risk. Thanks for your comment.

Lost-Platypus8271 • 13 points
Covid happened in 2020 when Trump was president. Trump appointed Fauci to lead the effort. And Fauci didn’t get rich doing that, I promise you. Most real scientists and doctors are not grifters. Trump ordered the lockdowns. Trump signed off on Operation Warp Speed ~~at bat~~ which developed the vaccine, and he took the vaccine. He also caught covid himself and was extremely sick. You don’t remember any of that? I read your whole message and thank you for writing that and for coming around to the right side of history. We’re glad to have you on our team. Edit: I’m genuinely asking if you don’t remember any of that, not just scolding you for having your timeline off. A lot of MAGA today actually seem to have “forgotten” that Trump was president the whole first year of covid and also on Jan 6, 2021.
F
Fig— • 5 points
I appreciate your curiosity and kindness. TBH I til today didn’t know fauci was appointed by Trump. The way he spoke about him would not lead one to believe that. It’s not that I don’t remember the timeline, it’s just that I personally was not affected by the pandemic until the following year. While Trump was in office in 2020 he spoke about Covid being a hoax, something made up or inserted by china to control elections. The amount of information being thrown at us was all over the place then. I didn’t necessarily believe any of that but I did think this would all blow over in a few months. I thought it was like H1N1 or the bird flu. When you don’t see results of the thing everyone is going on about it’s easy to discount the message and think there are other motivations involved. It comes down to lazy politics and I did not do my due diligence. I was blessed that nobody I knew died of Covid. Thanks again for your kindness.

You’re right and I honestly wouldn’t be here having an open discussion if I didn’t care. Nobody likes criticism, nobody likes to admit when they’re wrong. The only way I see to move forward is to use my voice and experience to hopefully help others see what’s going on right in front of their faces.

You must be from Arkansas? I’ve been here my entire life and honestly it just sounds like instead of you taking time to educate yourself through a lot of things, you seem to still be blaming other people for your horrible choices in what you chose to believe. Honestly it shouldn’t have taken Renee to be murdered for that to be a turning point for you. This has been happening to minorities for a while but why wasn’t that enough for you? I read some of what you wrote but it’s just way too much.
F

I appreciate that you read as much as you did. And I agree that the time for change was long ago. I didn’t intend for this post to be an excuse or pawn the blame onto everyone else. I really just wanted to give insight. I recognized atrocities but didn’t champion those oppressed in the way of using my vote for good. Thank you for your feedback.

It takes time, folks. You have to learn to walk before you can run. I don’t think they’re still making excuses. Maybe you should read the whole thing… isn’t it ironic to scold someone for not educating themself and then basically do the same thing when they offer an insight into why they were deluded for so long and how they eventually came around?
N
nanarocxie • 2 points
Yeah you do have to learn to walk before you run. From my own personal experience with having relationships with people who are die-hard Trump supporters, I’ve heard this story ten times over. Just like he stated about seeing “Christian” folks saying she deserved what she got, it’s honestly just not shocking in the Bible belt, South or whatever you want to call it. But when you know certain things are wrong, why participate in it? Just like the farmers here in Arkansas that voted for him and then got hung out to dry basically. I can drive through plenty of towns and country areas here in Arkansas and you see the same crazy signs everywhere. If you keep getting burned, do you continue to stick your hand in the fire?

Yep, and those farmers will STILL vote republican…every time..
F
Fig— • 3 points
Not from Arkansas but our states are pretty similar. I want to make it clear, MAGA is the extreme side of our political party. Your average Trump voters are not wearing red hats and looking for people to oppress. I never once considered joining the capital riot. I would not go to a Trump rally or wear president merch. Your average Trump voters are just regular people who vote against their own best interest. That’s part of what I set out to mention in my post. I’ve voted against my beliefs and best interest for years now. I believe you’ll find many of them vote with you all or abstain completely from casting a vote in the midterms.
S
Sleep_Till_5373 • 2 points
The problem with that is while you’re “learning to walk”, millions (billions maybe?) of lives are being fucked up. It might’ve been an understandable (debatable) excuse in 2017. Guess the racism, bigotry, millions dead from his COVID fumble, a coup attempt, and felonies weren’t enough of a deterrent to not vote for him not just once, but three times. But yea congrats for seeing it NOW. 👍🏿
