Toronto only ever honoured numbers, unless the player died, then switched to *retiring* numbers a few years ago. They said it was to “allow new players to build onto the legacy” and was absolutely the right way to do it for exactly this reason so of course they stopped doing it.

I think we have a couple of numbers that are unofficially retired / out of circulation. No one had worn 91 since Sergei. No one has worn 16 since Vladdy. I dont think we’ve issued 13 and 40 for the Euro twins either. 6 used to be retired but it isn’t considered retired by current owners.

During Sergei’s speech, he said: “Leaving Detroit was a mistake”. I think the delay had something to do with the way the two teams separated, plus the offer sheet with the Canes.

He signed a poison pill contract with Karmanos, who old man Ilitch hated, and they had a rivalry for years that was very personal. Karmanson allegedly tried to move the Whalers to Auburn Hills and play in the Palace of Auburn Hills where the Pistons played. And he moved the Detroit Whalers (formerly Plymouth Whalers now Flint Firebirds) into the Palace for like 20 games after Ilitch evicted the team in 1995. He ‘stole’ the Wings colors of Red and White. He also had Fedorov make 28 million dollars in 1997 via signing bonus and performance bonuses which was a total of 43 games. Then he left anyways in 2003 for the exact same offer the Wings had offered him to sign with the Ducks. So yeah there was bad blood for awhile they got better when Ilitch passed

The part that gets left out about the Ducks signing Fedorov, was that the Sergei wanted to wait to sign the deal and see what else was out there, per his agents advise. When he did not sign right away, Holland pulled the offer.
