The keyword “novice” is currently experiencing a surge in search interest, with over 20,000 searches reported. This trend can largely be attributed to heightened engagement with the term as its usage and meaning are explored in educational contexts. Recent updates from reputable sources like Merriam-Webster and Cambridge Dictionary have drawn attention to the definition of “novice,” prompting users to seek a clearer understanding of its implications.

Merriam-Webster’s detailed entry emphasizes the term’s application to individuals who are new to specific activities or fields, fostering curiosity about its relevance in various domains. Similarly, Wikipedia’s entry on “novice” likely provides comprehensive information about its context and applications, appealing to users’ desire for knowledge in an ever-evolving landscape.

The increase in searches may also be linked to discussions surrounding education and skill development, where “novice” is frequently referenced to categorize learners at the beginning stages of their journeys. This terminology is often utilized in training programs, tutorials, and outreach efforts, further driving interest in understanding the nuances associated with being a novice.

Overall, the combination of definitive sources and a focus on learning and personal growth contributes to the spike in search interest for the term “novice,” reflecting a collective quest for clarity and knowledge.

There’s an old joke and it goes like this: what’s the only problem with the Switzerland? Answer: the Swiss. Source. My Swiss friend told me this and I used to live there.

Sounds like a (mostly) red flag to me!

Is Switzerland more friendly?

I will say I’ve only skied in the German speaking parts of Switzerland but they are very orderly, respectful, and everyone was in control of themselves. I wouldn’t say friendly but definitely not rude.
M
MongoBongoTown • 178 points
> I wouldn’t say friendly but definitely not rude. This describes nearly every public interaction I’ve had with German and Swiss people.

Germans are often perceived as rude by other nationalities even though they do not intend to be. Sometimes it’s the language barrier (it’s really hot and miss with older Germans when it comes to English) and sometimes it’s just because they are German.
M
mayorlazor • 29 points
I went to Oktoberfest this past year. Germans, or maybe bavarians are very friendly if you actually talk to them.
E
Ecthelion-O-Fountain • 20 points
I feel like Germans have “fun mode” and they are very fun. But they are serious and direct by default.
R
retADA_mtb • 4 points
That is definitely a Bavarian thing. Even bavarians think the rest of Germany is rude

Wish I had photo of Lufthansa card on German culture. The one that sticks out was “the customer is not always right, but they do really want to help you” or something to that effect. Refreshing.

That’s interesting, because my experience in the Alps has been 99.9% in Austria. I say 99.9%, because I’ve been skiing in Austria and hiked up to the Swiss border, so I spent a little bit of time in Switzerland while skiing… Even if it was fucking about at the top before skiing back down on the Austrian side. The Austrians very much ascribe to the “fck around and find out” model of lift queues. As my brother says, you either get your elbows out, or you don’t ski.

Austria is nothing compared to Italy.

K

No, the Swiss are not friendly. But they are sticklers for doing everything properly and following all rules. Thus they would not cut in line, etc.
B
Broad-Cress-3689 • 24 points
Sorry, am a Swiss skier. People push forward nonstop. If you aren’t defensive about your spot, multiple people will push in front of you.
L
LeBronTheGreatest31 • 3 points
People will respect your space and lane but if you’re too slow you will get caught lol the efficiency pushes thru
D
drewlb • 22 points
Eh… Certainly better than Italy at queues, but still not anything like the US. The Swiss strangely are not great at queues in any aspect of life, which is odd to me because I would have expected them to be the champions.

How about chamonix?
R

Cham’s not too bad. The worst ones I experienced were 3 valleys and St Anton’s. When it gets bad… hoooooly shit. People don’t even try to hide it. They just try to obviously cut you and if you stop them it turns into a passive aggressive war and maybe some shit talking. I don’t understand why the resorts don’t deal with it, it’s such a turn off. I ski to chill not to fight passive aggressive fucks.
E
evelynsmee • 6 points
3 valleys is the rudest place I’ve ever skied. It’s crowded and attracts a high volume of dickheads…. it’s kind of a chicken or egg as well. Crowds and lift queues if you don’t join the pushing you become the disruptor and things don’t move. I was distinctly more cunty there than I’ve been elsewhere, not deliberately or just increases irritability. But it’s not the pushing per se, it’s the empty seats and skis flung everywhere outside all the bars, the drunks, and the excess of English twats (I am British I can slag ourselves off, en masse we are awful)
S
Scary_Reflection_432 • 4 points
First time I’m reading the word “cunty”! What a great expression… LOL

3 Valleys is way ruder than US/Canada/Australia/NZ/Japan. No idea of queueing, had my 8yo blatantly shoved out of the way yesterday next to me in a lift line. And like OP says, they’re usually terrible skiers. In general, I’d say that the general skiing level here is way lower than US/Canada/Japan. Japan gets an honourable mention – for such an overwhelmingly polite society (even in the face of some Australians thinking it’s the new Bali), there is a very small minority of riders who seem to belong to a subculture where you get prizes for cutting people off.

Had the complete opposite experience at Arlberg. Everyone at every resort I have been to has been super cool and willing to show me around. Real senders recoginize if you are a Jerry or not.
R
RabbiSchlem • 4 points
We were at Lech at a choke point lift that everyone transferring to the area had to go through. It was fuckin terrible. The rest of St Anton was fine. Not sure what your sender comments about, but ya it was mostly Jerries being lame.
J
jungturk • 9 points
Brevant & Flagere were both shitshows when I was there last. And it seemed like the lift line approaches were all cut downhill to accentuate the melee.
J
Jaded-Assistant9601 • 20 points
I like how they funnel the…. funnel of people (no lift lines or separating ropes) into 4-wide pass scanners immediately before loading a 6 person chair. Half the chairs were going up with 4 people. Total chaos zero fucks given.
K
KXfjgcy8m32bRntKXab2 • 4 points
This is one I will never understand. Sometimes a 6 seater has 4 scanners with one out of order. Add the group of dumdums that pass the scan then “oh Jerry isn’t with us! Where is he?” and proceed to block the whole queue. You can see 2 people out of 6 going up while there is a queue. And French lift ops can’t be bothered about the chaos. Policing the queue clearly is a this is above my paycheck attitude (they make minimal wage, I understand they don’t want to confront people).
A
AdmiralWackbar • 6 points
It’s always been fine when I’ve gone. You run into some rude people, but that happens everywhere
R
RabbiSchlem • 2 points
It was 99% of the time fine. It only ever happened at super duper overcrowded lifts.

I skied chamonix almost 20 years ago, but then it wasn’t too bad. More shenanigans than the US for sure but not as bad as Italy sounds.

Do you know if your trip coincided with another countries holiday schedule?
T
ToughSuccotash2007 • 5 points
Good question. I understand it overlapped with an Italian (or Catholic holiday). Forget the name… something like epiphany?

I was about to comment how I never have OPs issues in Europe, even wo the NA queue system, but then I remember I ski in Switzerland and sometimes France (Chamonix, Les Arcs, Val Thorens and Val-d’Isère).

I got fucking SMOKED in this very same area. The year was 1996. I was waiting for friends who were still coming down uphill from me. I was off to the side of the trail, closer to the lift tower facing uphill with my skis “pizza-ed” to hold me in place. I was resting by leaning forward over my poles. With my head down I didn’t see this a-hole careening towards me with zero control. He hit me so fucking hard that I saw stars. I got rocked so bad that I came out of my skis, my poles, my gloves, my hat and goggles (pre helmet days). Yard sale was the true definition here. My fuckin pants even got pulled up to my knees. Anyways, the dude just got up and skied away. My friends had to come scoop up my remains and shake some sense into me to even be able to get me on my feet. I eventually got my shit together and skied down. I had to take a several hour break before I went back out. Awful experience. They were terrible skiers.

I blame the overlap of hockey season and skiing season. Some of us get confused after a hit and forget what sport they are playing. The starfish kids will take you out at the knees.
