The story would’ve made much more sense if you were an Auror coming to investigate Hogwarts over its possible connections to a goblin coup. Instead, you’re a psychopathic teenager who’s smiling as you learn the unforgivable curses and is completely unphased by death. You spend nearly 0 time doing student stuff anyway.

My favourite parts was when the score was about to do a John Williams motif and then handbrake turned into a much worse, notably unsatisfactory yet legally distinct, key change.

Those older HP games were so much fun. They were kind of goofy and primitive, but I remember having a great time exploring the castle and finding all of the wizard cards. Good times!

I actually turned off the minimap to force myself to learn the way around Hogwarts and I actually found that the best part of the game for the first ten hours, before the charm and magic of the castle wears off and it becomes Just Another AAA Open World Game

I got about 20 really enjoyable hours out of it, and 10 more ok hours out of it after. The open world was so insanely boring though. Once I unlocked the entire castle and finished the main quest I felt no desire to revisit anything.

In the late stages of the game I was using unforgivable curses every five seconds, killing people left and right, and no one bats an eye. But when it happens in a cutscene it’s suddenly a huge deal. This was extremely immersion-breaking for me with this game. I play a lot of CRPGs and other types of games that tend to have at least a minimal layer of consequence to your behavior and it just felt entirely absent in this game, which was weird given the setting and nature of Magic in the HP universe. Sometimes I can get over that kind of thing if the game has enough strengths to make up for it but this game did not fit me.

My wife struggled through the entire game without using a single unforgivable and it was such a chore I don’t think the devs imagined anyone would. They certainly balanced the game with them in mind. There isn’t even an achievement for refusing to use them which seems like such an obvious thing. It’s nuts.

I started playing it pretty recently but really hadn’t read anything about it. I completely assumed you’d be just playing as an ordinary student that slowly becomes involved in the plot as it escalated around you. I found it really disappointing to just be playing what is clearly the main character with special abilities and special things about them.
