I live in Columbus, and I can tell you Meredith and the kids are so incredibly loved in the community. Meredith is a pediatric nurse (not sure if she’s still practicing), and she has to be one of the strongest people I’ve seen. The guys show up for her, and she shows up for them. The person who breaks my heart the most is Johnny and Matt’s dad, Guy.

Their parents looked absolutely gutted after the win. It was local news for me when it happened and I cried with every update because it is just so sad. I’m glad the team brought the girls and his jersey in for a photo on the ice, but man – I cried when I saw the parents on the broadcast and don’t know if I could have held it together like they did.

So frustrating to see people driving drunk today. Even celebrities! Just get an Uber! I remember being in college before Uber and while I rarely drank, I hated how much taxi cabs sucked everywhere. Did the right thing calling a cab, but by the time they showed up 90 minutes – 2 hours later you felt like an idiot who could have just waited to sober up. Now Ubers in small towns show up in 9 minutes. At your fingertips.

Cycling on the shoulder of a highway is permitted. The driver had 6-8 drinks and was road raging and tried to pass a vehicle on the shoulder where they were cycling. Go blame the victim somewhere else.

Thank you. I was disgusted when the drivers lawyer tried to vilify the Gaudreau brothers like that. I’m from Calgary Canada, a city that has adopted and loves the entire family. Props to the US team for not forgetting and giving honour to Johnny and his family. It was a beautiful thing to see.

I had not heard that and will amend my comment. However the court ruled that it was not a factor – “There’s no credence in the argument there was contributory negligence on the part of the cyclists,” said Superior Court Judge Michael Silvanio. I would appreciate the context except for the fact that you brought it up on a post where the victims were being honoured and you didn’t seem to have any motive other than blaming the victim.

There’s tons of videos showing cyclists almost getting clipped by trucks and the general response on IG/YT is “biker had it coming”. It’s a moment of annoyance, _maybe_, for cars who have to slow down for a minute or two. But for drivers to try and scare or even clip cyclists on purpose? There’s something genuinely wrong with those people. Actual sociopathy.

I was hit while biking in 2017. I was on a wide shoulder on a country road where the intersecting road had a stop sign and I didn’t. I’m lucky the guy stopped for the stop sign at least so that when he pulled out in front of me, he wasn’t going the 55mph he could have been. And this was middle of a sunny day. The driver was devastated and I was okay, all things considered (broken nose, some stitches, some crazy bruises). What blew my mind after that was how many friends also had stories of getting hit while riding their bikes, especially endurance athletes (who ride on more populated roads but also tend to be more aware of the likelihood of cars not treating them like pedestrians). Since then I still ride my bike quite a bit, but I’ve ridden on roads a handful of times, especially after moving to larger metro areas with crazier drivers. I even picked my current location based on the proximity to an (excellent) paved trail. I was so heartbroken when I heard about Johnny and Matthew, and so so so many others that have been killed or seriously injured while cycling.

The general rule of thumb as someone who bikes in NYC is it’s a matter of time for _when_, not _if_, you’ll get doored or get hit. You just hope it’s not bad when it happens.
