The Yanks throttled the Pirates in their 3 wins (16-3, 10-0, 12-0). It was truly an underdog story. Every Oct 13th, people still gather at the spot of the home run (now on or near the campus of the University of Pittsburgh) and listen to a broadcast recording of game 7. Pittsburgh still has that section of the left field wall standing and there is a marker for this home run. As a Pirates fan, may these days return once again.

One notch to Joe is the Jays were losing in the bottom of the 9th when he hit that, so it goes to Game 7 without. Mazeroski’s came in a tie game so without the game would have gone to extras. Game 7 obvious gives it a little more juice but the losing while doing it adds some luster for Carter.

My father was nine years old and a Yankees fan in Troy, NY when Maz hit that home run. I texted him this morning, and he replied “Yeah I can say RIP now … I guess I am over it.” Sixty six years is a long time to hold a grudge. But it tells you two things: 1) the broken heart of a kid doesn’t heal very quickly, and 2) Maz did something memorable that day, and possibly eternal. RIP to one of the World Series’ greatest heroes.
