I worked at 247 for a decade, from 2012-2022. Back when 247 was first launching, the network was going after young but established newspaper reporters. I was on Twitter around 2009, and Wes was one of the first SEC reporters I followed. He was the gold standard of the old school meets new school. Ultimate professionalism and journalistic standards, but always in a way that interfaced with the new digital media space perfectly. When I interviewed with 247 at 23 years old with only a year of online experience (no newspaper experience) I thought I had no chance of getting hired. I did, but I still felt like I was way over my skis. I sort of just watched Wes and started to do a lot of what he did. Then we got to interact a few times back and forth, helping each other with different network pieces. He was the best. Always happy to help, always uniquely Wes. I remember most the Behind Enemy Lines pieces we did, because you just couldn’t forget Wes’. He’d always have a reminder that the CUBS were the best baseball team on Planet Earth, as well as 2-3 wacky questions — which players would you take if you were going to be stranded on a deserted island and why, that sort of thing. It made those pieces that could often get mundane reading and writing so much fun. Knowing everything he had been through in the last few years and pulling through it, to hear this… just an absolute gut punch. RIP, Wes.

Absolutely torn up over this. Wes was an amazing person that represented the best of college sports and humanity, alike. Anyone that interacted with him could tell you he was just a man doing what he loved, covering the Vols, and he did it well. He dealt with so much, whether it was our fanbase being patently insane, other fanbases being crazy, teaching himself to walk again after a stroke, or raising his four year old son who was born with kidney issues, but throughout it all, he was ALWAYS positive and kind. We respected him because he respected us. Vol Nation will not be the same without him. Above all else, I’m beyond heartbroken for his four year old son, Hank, and his wife, Lauren, who is expecting another baby in May. Please keep them in your prayers.

In Tennessee, the person could be charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the penalties are a wide range from probation, license suspension, fines, and jail time. It all depends on their criminal history and the circumstances of the accident. Due to this being a chain reaction with 5 vehicles, I wouldn’t doubt a little to nothing penalty, if they are even charged. Three years later, and we are waiting to see if there will be any penalties for a guy killing a family member doing 100 and running a red light, actually killed a second person, too…nothing, yet.

the courts really need to start fucking people up for tailgating. 2 seconds minimum at highway speeds. in this situation, no one in the pack had time to slow down. if you’re in traffic, give yourself some space!!! and don’t let the car behind you fall too far behind by speeding back up to the pack in front of you. if i see everyone way up there hitting the brakes, i’ll back off the throttle until the car behind me is close enough that i know he’s aware of me first. then i’ll get up there and join the traffic jam.

Believe it or not, cops sitting on the side of the road *clearly visible* actually have a positive effect on speeding issues. When there are known spots that cops camp out and can be seen, people will slow down. The nonsense they do with camping in blind spots of the road, the middle of the median that’s full of trees, etc? That’s what we get and see more of and that’s more dangerous. Hell, pulling someone over for speeding during rush hour is going to be more dangerous as people slow down in the right lane and/or move over to the middle, causing a chain reaction of rubberbanding sets of people braking behind them.

The goal of traffic enforcement is voluntary compliance, and you can get that a multitude of ways—one of the easiest is to sit on the side of a major roadway with the rear radar antenna transmitting. Pulling people over and ticketing them is conversely one of the least effective, especially in urban areas.

Not to excuse bad driving, but this is more than just a lack of enforcement. Knoxville (and most TN cities frankly) has not built the infrastructure for the amount of people that have been moving into the state. Governor’s Haslam and Lee have both been courting and bringing in businesses and disgruntled Republicans from other states for basically 16 years now. Neither of them, nor the General Assembly, thought we needed more/bigger roads or some form of better public transit. That particular stretch of I-40 is particularly dangerous for several reasons. A few miles west, I-40 and I-75 merge. Then about a mile up the road from the split, there’s a weigh station for trucks, then you start to get into west Knoxville where in a normal world is where the traffic should have started, not miles back…then you also have I-140 that runs N/S. It connects Oak Ridge *and* Maryville with Knoxville. In less than 5 miles, there is a major clogging mechanism with the weigh station, plus 4 different major thoroughfares all converging. It’s an absolute *mess*, and the only thing notable about this accident is that someone with a name was involved and not just another random person trying to live their life. No amount of policing can overcome poor infrastructure planning.

Very well said. I used to live near this stretch of I-40 until recently and it is indeed a traffic nightmare out there. I only even became aware of Rucker’s existence within the last few weeks as I have watched his reports regularly on the local news, but this story has really been bothering me since I heard about it. Maybe just because of my recent knowledge of his work and now he is gone, but what a sad thing that happened.

Yes. People complained that traffic enforcement was racist and the ultimate end result is that it largely stopped due to that as well as police staffing issues.

I live in Powell and work in West Knoxville, and this is why I take backroads to work instead of the interstate. Maybe it is because I grew up on the backroads of East TN, but I feel 100 times safer on them. Less idiots to worry about. Also, Rucker was the reason I came back to Twitter a few years ago. He was my first follow, and he was one of the few people I enjoyed following online. Breaks my heart not only for his family, but for our fanbase. We are less without him.
