I don’t think this should be a reason to change policy, but many suicide efforts outside of guns are relatively unsuccessful, giving the victim a chance to realize that they were wrong to want to commit suicide. Guns though provide a very low chance of failure in regards to suicide attempts.

After that point people usually self regulate, seek help, or freak out others until help is sought for them. With many methods self rescue is possible, whether that’s getting a finger under the noose and yelling for help or calling 911 and telling them you ate the whole medicine cabinet. Guns are fast if immediately availible and almost always(9/10) fatal when used. I’m a gun owner and a 2a supporter, but guns in the house increase suicide risk there’s no two ways about it. There’s a reason my wife doesn’t know the combination to our gun safe even though it makes us less prepared, and its because shes high risk for self harm.

Same, they never quite got my moms meds right. They never got her diagnosis right either. Wasn’t until the last year of her life a senior Psyche nurse *thinks* she figured it out and got my mom on meds that actually made her what i’d call normal. That is a pretty common story among the mentally ill, many of them don’t have the money for inpatient treatment and the systems in place to treat them outpatient are inadequate.

Asylums are good if they’re properly staffed and funded. The problem with asylums in the US is that they were incredibly understaffed and underfunded before they were shut down, and all the dangerous crazy people were released into the public where they could harass and terrorize normal people.

The instances of abuse were more than limited, both on the doctors end and on the end of the general public who would make false claims to get people thrown in an asylum so they didn’t have to deal with their problems. But really it was a cost thing. The abuse was just the excuse used to justify cutting the cost. Looking back, the cost of dealing with the repercussions have made it clear that the cost of keeping them open was far more preferable, but they didn’t know then what we know now.
