He certainly wouldn’t hurt to have in a room with Arden Key, second year Femi Oladejo, Jihad Ward, and rookie Ruben Bain/David Bailey. Pay him up

Not really, all they had at that time was a young Harold Landry and nothing else. You’ve got a young Femi, go draft a true edge with the first pick so that you aren’t beholden to whoever you pay in free agency here long term. But you allow an older experienced guy to get paid to take the pressure off of younger players while they develop into the full time starter down the road. Bud Dupree was part of the best pass rushing teams in the past decade for the titans but he did get overpaid because we didn’t draft anyone. Clowney was fine out there but he got injured. Beasley was signed because Jrob was desperate since he didn’t have any young players coming in the wings. And at the time of Clowney, Beasley, and Dupree the team was a contending team needing some defensive help to complete the team. Not even close to the same situation now. Clowney and Beasley weren’t exactly great locker room guys, but Chubb is supposed to be a good locker room guy with plenty of experience. Could be a great mentor for a second year Femi and rookie Bain/Bailey. The hope is one of those young players would take his job by the end of the year or going into year 2, and you wouldn’t sign a guy like Chubb to a long term deal anyway due to his age. But you’ve got the cap space and the need, so why not try to fill the need with all that cap and make the floor of this team more competitive with a young QB?
