Mark’s quick interview after winning gold slopestyle x games was so sweet. I loved that he was so happy how he rode rather than being happy he win. And that the judges rewarded his amazing run with gold and that he was happy to be wearing any medal at his age and just so cool what colour he got.

Yes, White is (was) ridiculously talented but you can’t say that McMorris isn’t on the same level.

A lot of the ski/snowboard community know each other well. White was not liked by about anybody. He was a brat and never really grew out of it. His talent is undeniable though, and he was ahead of his time for sure.

Genuinely curious, as I honestly don’t know much about him outside of winning a bunch of half pipe gold medals. What makes him kinda a turd?

Ohh short answer – isolated himself, had a personal half -pipe for training solo, never seemed to be friends with the other riders on the circuit, even taking on target and as a sponsor. It’s most definitely more complex than that – but just never endered himself to the community and was really competitive. There’s a lot more and some of it is definitely on snowboarding as hating the golden boy, but at the same time he never hosted and event, or showed he cared about others. Leaving Burton was weird – given they had backed him his whole career to start what I’ve heard as a mid-teir company. But – he’s really fucking good at snowboarding.

Ah ok that’s fair. I agree. It never really seemed like he embraced snowboarding culture or the culture really embraced him, which I always thought was interesting considering he’s one of the most recognizable figures in snowboarding. My thought is that anyone who “sells out” with huge corporate sponsorships will never really be embraced by the culture. Snowboarding has always been a counter culture sport, and just doesn’t blend well with the corporate backed super stars. It’ll be interesting to see how Zeb’s career progresses, as he seems positioned to be one of the next huge stars in snowboarding. As a North Carolinian, I absolutely love how much he reps NC and how often he comes back to host events and do partnerships with our local mountains.

He did but was kinda concurrent with snowboarding and he eventually picked snow. He aged with the sport and was really good. There is a lot of info out there but basically Michael Jordan level competitive nature with Kobe Bryant social skills if that makes sense. Basically didn’t really want to be friends with anyone.

One thing I will say as a boarder who was born in 99 and started riding in 03 (and was a massive Shaun White fan in my younger years), Shaun’s reputation was ruined in equal parts by his own doing as well as the media’s. The real problem was how marketable he was as a product to the mainstream audience. Halfpipe is also such a tiny fraction of actual snowboarding. The media talks about him like this specimen that no one can compete with who has supremacy over all of halfpipe snowboarding. Was just watching the olympics halfpipe broadcast and during the highlights of a Japanese rider’s run the commentator said “The reason that a lot of these Japanese riders are even as powerful as they are is because of Shaun White’s influence” He is an incredible athlete but at the end of the day he went down a path that made him super unlikeable imo. Sorry for the wall of text lmao

I switched from skiing at 50 because someone told me I was too late. I ride with my kids and I’m doing a backcountry tour n Hakuba in 10 days. Been getting 50+ days a year, it’s my favorite activity in the world! I’m jealous of your time young doing it but at least I got here.
