The trending topic of “olympic medal count 2026” is primarily driven by the recent launch of the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. As indicated by the high search interest level of over 100K searches, there is significant public engagement with the new medal counts following the commencement of the Games. Immediate updates on performance and medal tallies capture the attention of audiences eager to follow their favorite events.

Recent coverage, such as from The New York Times, highlights live updates from Day 1 of the Winter Olympics, including the first medals awarded. This has sparked interest in tracking which countries are excelling in various competitions and how the medal standings might evolve throughout the event.

Additionally, NBC Los Angeles reports on specific events, noting the performance of teams such as the U.S. in figure skating and women’s hockey. The focus on key sports and the early success of particular nations reinforces the public’s desire to monitor ongoing medal counts, leading to heightened search activity as fans seek real-time information.

CBC Gem has a highlights section so if you don’t have time to watch a 2+ hour event, you can watch it in ~10 minutes!

Fun fact: I took Italian in college and my classes were full of aspiring opera singers

Can confirm: am married to an opera singer. She took classes in Italian, French, German, and Russian. She also spent a semester in Rome.

Probably unpopular in this sub but the idea of a figure skating olympic competition without any Russians is bizarre for me. I’m not stopping to watch, but doesn’t feel the same. As a Brazilian I’ve always watched Winter Olympics as a neutral and Russia, particularly in this sport, were, despite all the controversies, a undeniable part of the show.

There are some Russians, but they skate for Georgia now.
R

To be fair, they were absolutely embarrassing last time. I still remember it: one girl and her coaches throwing literal tantrums while the other girl stood there awkwardly. It was weird and bizarre and that’s without considering that the Russian government was using the Olympics as a cover for a literal invasion, shich was very rude to not only Ukraine but China too.

The Russians always have beautiful skaters, it’s really a shame they aren’t there to compete
P
Pale_Land_5107 • 6 points
Unfortunately their government’s choices have cost them their spot
O

They should’ve just done the neutral flag. I know there’s a few neutral athletes from Russia/Belarus but it’s not many. Either that or the ROC which seemed like a good medium from the country not being featured while still letting the individual athletes compete.

Curling They want to “crotch” the yellow stones aka make them split like a crotch. That phrasing sounds so wrong, yet it makes perfect sense. XD

Skiathlon This sport looks brutal, my god
C
Charlie_Runkle69 • 2 points
On the one hand, it’s for sure one of the most brutal events. On the other, much like race walking it’s probably the best chance someone who isn’t overly talented at sports has of becoming an Olympian. You’ve just got to be willing to spend countless hours of your life freezing your ass off and gritting your teeth. Those 3 aussie skiers today are very likely in that boat.

Oh there is the 50KM Mass at the other side of these games, we get a return of the deathmarch event.

😱 I would die
C
Crayshack • 3 points
In terms of how long it takes and roughly how rough it is on the body, it’s very similar to the marathon. Not an event for the faint of heart, and I would say that just completing the distance counts as a major athletic achievement.

Fun fact a lot of the Canadian womens hockey team went to UW Madison and so did a lot of the USA women’s hockey team players , I hope they face off !pretty sure they will , Will be a intense game if it happens!

Would a woman goalie be able to play in a men’s league, physically? Just curious
G
greendino71 • 2 points
No shot really. The men for example can rip a slapshot 100mph with ease and the game with men is like 5x faster Maybe in much lower leagues but once you hit juniors and up, there would be a massive gap

In the 1990s Manon Rheaume played in some preseason exhibition games for the Lightning. She also played for several men’s minor league teams.

Women’s Hockey – Group A (Switzerland 0, Canada 4 – Final) Switzerland’s Saskia Maurer, 50 saves, with the 2nd most saves in a women’s Olympic hockey game Record: 51 saves, Canada’s Ann Renée-Desbiens – Group A 2022 vs. United States 4-2 win The overall save record is in men’s hockey, Latvia’s Kristers Gudlevskis with 56 saves vs. Canada in the 2014 quarterfinals (2-1 loss)

> Kristers Gudlevskis Absolute legend. I’m pretty sure this game got him a contract with the Tampa Bay Lighting (although he didn’t go above AHL play unfortunately). Either way, I remember him getting peppered with like 10 shots against Canada and finally when the whistle blew and he was on the ice laying on the puck you could see his chest compressions gasping for air through his pads. GOAT.
W
WatchOutIGotYou • 3 points
Yep! And he did get his NHL cup of coffee, 3 NHL regular season games played and 2 playoff games played. He’s still playing currently in Germany’s DEL with the Fischtown Pinguins in Bremerhaven
