The feds could see the random string of numbers and letters that is your wallet address on the blockchain. But the blockchain just says 10 bitcoin went to wallet xyz, and it doesn’t say where wallet xyz is or who made it.

So they don’t have a way to “trace” it, because the law enforcement’s side would only get “Yes, this ransom money was sent to this address [XYZ]” But, even if they see THAT specific chain [XYZ] and they see the name of the wallet, you can’t actually retrieve a PHYSICAL IP location right? Like, you’d have know which server the wallet is on, THEN reach out to that company – or if it’s your own IP they’re just screwed?

Until that person wants to transfer that BTC balance into a bank account as Fiat. You’ll be able to trace from the anonymous wallet to the wallet that was used to convert and cash out. There’s some nuance to it, but it’s possible.
