I don’t like how nowadays like 75% of teams the logo boils down to just a circle or a basketball with their name wrapped around it in some fashion Very much ‘let’s all do the same thing at the same time’. I think, when it comes to sports franchises, everytime you change the logo/type-of-aesthetic you need to ask yourself, ‘is this clearly and absolutely better than the old one?’ If the answer is no, don’t change it. Tradition and brand familiarity is important in this arena, there can’t be any changes that aren’t absolutely better to any observer Sure, some of these 90s logos look bad. Maybe they get the 2020s just-a-circle update, but any time one becomes iconic I feel it should be permanent. That way you look at the league’s logo on a page like this and they are from all difference era’s. I’ll always appreciate and respect the indiana Hoosiers for sticking with those awful clown pants all these years, just cause. And you certainly don’t see the Yankees moving on from the pinstripes

Once a new style of logos become popular people are gonna be hailing the current style as “clean.” It’s just how it is. I remember how ridiculed the Raptors logo was for being Barney and now it’s considered one of the best of all time

Eh, several of them are worse than current ones… a handful are basically the same. Some are basically the same except the words have been removed. Not all these are great. Warriors one is definitely and improvement. Dallas too.

Iirc, didn’t people hate the original Raptors jerseys at the time due to how cartoonish they were and that nobody would take the team seriously in them, which is why they changed it a few years later. Now they’re hailed as one of the greatest throwbacks in Sports

I don’t remember this at all. I remember Jersey and overall merch sales being pretty high across all 4 major sports in the 90s. Shit was actually considered fly.

That wasnt because of the jersey themselves tho it was as just the style of clothing that was popular back then. Even in the early 2000s you’d see people wearing sports jerseys casually of teams they weren’t even fans of

Facts. We used to go to the shoe stores, look at the shoes first, then go to the jersey section. I still remember all the jerseys I used to beg my parents for. It was that this kid at my school who had every ball jersey you could think of. Yeah, he sold drugs, but we still thought he was the coolest lol.

True, and I still feel this way personally. I really don’t like the Jazz, Pistons, Rockets, Warriors (awful) logos on the pic. And they were the logos during my youth, so I don’t think it’s about nostalgia for me. But it’s just personal taste I guess. I much prefer minimalist logos (old Hawks and Pistons for example).

don’t know what you have until you lose it. i will say some logos and jerseys are more dated than others. but one common ground everyone should agree on is that league branding was in a better place when teams actually embraced who they were. they had jerseys that clearly made them *them.* along with court designs and practice warm ups. you would always be able to spot a team from a mile away because they had something unique about them.

That wasn’t the perception at the time. At the time, the perception was that all the teams were throwing out their classic heritage in order to chase a passing fad.

I still don’t love them now. Many belong on cereal boxes

I think most the people in this sub are 35+ and just have a preference for the logo they grew up with, so probably jerseys too
