Im not gonna lie, I have never been able to get into Manchild as a song. I get what she was trying to do, but it wasn’t catchy to me, the whole “blame your mom” bit was actually kinda gross joke or not, and it’s a rare pop song where I didn’t like it from the get-go and it didn’t grow on me, either. I don’t think it is anywhere near her best work. I did give her album a listen and while a lot is not my cup of tea, it surprised me Manchild was even chosen as the first single because it feels like the weakest song on the album. It’s very rare I have this strong a negative opinion on a nominee, but I feel like making this song prominent was something very artificially done by her label and forced out there. It’s no Espresso, for sure.

“I choose to blame your mom” is the excuse she uses to avoid blaming the guys she’s seeing for their behavior. It’s an acknowledged character flaw on the narrator’s part that she’s blaming a woman and giving a pass to the adult man in front of her.

Eh, it’s an old phrase that’s acknowledged to be in poor taste as it consistently ignores the father’s role in raising the child. Like I said, I get what she was trying to do, but resurrecting a sexist trope was never going to play well, especially when still missing exactly why it’s sexist And the song still just does not sound good to me. One line can be dismissed if the rest can carry it. There’s plenty of songs not ruined because one line seems a little off. That’s not this song.

This album didn’t do much for me either tbh. SnS was a grower and I like a lot of Sabrina’s earlier work, but it’s possible this latest era is just not for me. I liked her performance though, she’s always pretty charismatic on stage.
