It’s not that it makes anyone more qualified, but it’s been proven to make people more electable. If someone who was a military vet could’ve gone hard at Trump for being a draft dodger, it probably would’ve been an effective strategy.

Also, we need some more veterans in office. Obviously, there are far bigger crises, but we do need more people who will champion the VA. The by far biggest issue is funding. They’re trying to serve a much larger veteran population on pre-GWOT funding levels.

VHA is the single largest independent component of the civilian federal government. It has over 400,000 employees. None of the branches or smaller agencies within DOD comes close to that, and even DOD as a whole is something like 600,000 civilians. For contrast, IRS has…. 77,000? It used to be more. IRS needs more funding too. I think I saw that ever $1 put into tax compliance activities returns $3 in revenue otherwise not collected. Some people might think that’s great, but the reality is that the bottom 95% of us are paying everything we’re obligated to pay, and the top 5% isn’t is because IRS doesn’t have the money to go after them and deal with the costs of being in court for years.

Absolutely. The more obnoxious the account is, the likelier it’s a bot. Profiles are often telling. IMO Reddit should eliminate concealed profiles, since it already offers anonymity. Makes it easy for bots to take inconsistent positions without having to keep track of accounts.

I do believe that’s a price worth paying to make it harder for bots, trolls, bad actors, and shills to fly under the radar. The usefulness that a hidden profile has to an average joe who doesn’t want to be harassed is nice for the individual, but is an overall degradation of the site as a whole. It’s insidious, because every individual sees immediate personal benefits, but in the long term the overall quality of engagement on the platform goes down, but that’s much easier to overlook.

Its a genuine concern. There’s a major problem with stalking and while this did resolve it, it also gave the trolls a huge win. There must be some way to make it harder for the trolls, while still giving victims a way to protect themselves. Maybe require a manual review to get your account set to private? or only allowing it for accounts of a certain age? Requiring an account to be like a year old would probably get rid of 90% of the trolling.
