Immigration does affect housing, thats the trade off for bringing in doctors, teachers, or trades people. The Immigration part of this deal , isnt for skill migrants, but for mostly unlimited students, who will be doing unskilled work. “Unprecedented Student Mobility and Post-Study Opportunities: For the first time with any country, New Zealand has created a dedicated pathway on Student Mobility and Post Study Work Visas with India. Considering all our young people are paying taxes in Australia, I dont mind having a new influx of people to pay my super when I reach that age. Opening up 20% of the world’s population to a favorable trade deal is also good for our economy. And having a foot in the door when the USD fails just as BRICS come into play is a potential major win

Not sure unrestricted numbers of students from _anywhere_ would be a good idea. Wherever they came from it would cause issues with rental prices getting pressured upwards. Also, can you remember the massive tax break the Nats gave to the landlords because they love them so much? They’d love prices to skyrocket, so you can see why National would be happy with that outcome, as it keeps a core group of the support happy. It’s just unfortunate that the deal is currently done with India, but you’d hope that people would realize it would be an issue regardless of where the students/immigrants came from.

I am quoting your own comment about the unlimited students. If there are a 1000 students that can be taken by NZ, assuming people want to study in NZ, they will get filled. That is irrespective of which specific country they come from. So a 1000 new students (irrespective of origin) are entering NZ and create rental prices to go up according to you. Even if no deal was made. Those 1000 students would still come. So it makes your issue not about immigration but about an education policy that is affecting cost of living and if NZ institutes are actually delivering quality education. There will never be a scenario of unlimited students that the education institutes can take in. However it is known that education institutes make up courses which don’t translate to a meaningful job. An example from Australia is that institutes opened a lot of hair dressing and cooking courses which interestingly indians used as a loophole to come in, get a residency and then move on to do odd jobs around. A lot of those institutes weren’t even attempting to teach properly and knew this was a loophole made. Your “anger” is valid, however needs to be redirected.

Both mainstream parties are pro-immigration ostensibly for economic reasons, but yeah, all I’m seeing is increased costs, lower salaries, competition, increased homelessness, and environmental damage, and loss of some values I’ve wrongly considered core to New Zealand. It doesn’t have to be a “immigrants bad” framing but JFC, can we please at least try to look after the country in a sustainable way for once in the last 25 years. We get very few from those countries because of low wages and the cost of living, they’re generally better off in their own countries. Most of our migration is from very poor countries, India, Philippines etc. I have no problem with immigration but unmanaged it’s terrible for locals. Just go into any A&E to see the results.
