Piggybacking off this – I try to repost this when I see posts like this, in the hopes you (or someone) can find some comfort in the words – and if not, please excuse the intrusion. I lost my 15 year old girl (dog) in October 2022. Only advice I can offer here is to remember the positives, and not focus on the negatives (if any). She’s done her job, keeping you safe and happy and loved, and it’s her turn to rest. You’ll always miss her, you’ll always remember her. You’ll even go looking for her for the next few weeks (well, I did). There’s a lot of habits that you’re going to slowly stop, and that’s ok. Changing your life to suit you is not forgetting her. Donating/throwing away her toys or blankets isn’t forgetting her. There’s no timeline on grief, and there’s no timeline on moving on. Cry your tears. I’m sorry you’ve reached the end of your journey. Words will never make this easier. Just keep your head up, and live the life she’d want you to. This is a good time to live a little for you. I spent years looking after my girl as she got ill, and I sacrificed a lot of me and my time to keep her safe. If you feel you’ve done the same, take advantage of this time. Its ok to be happy and enjoy life without her. Life isn’t over. Its just changing. You’ll be ok mate. I’m so sorry.

I love this, yesterday I wanted to get sushi and boba to cheer myself up and I felt guilty like I was enjoying life without her. Also she was such alittle begger she always was around when we ate. I am so very sorry for your loss. Although I can’t exactly feel how you’re feeling, my boy is almost 10, and I know the time is coming. He’s a big dog, but I still thought I would have more time. Everything you said here I have been thinking about lately. When I eat dinner I usually plan around stuff he can eat, or I make sure I have something that he can have too. Instead of a paw he will give me a toy, usually toss it at me and smile like “okay I gave you my toy now give me your food”. When I wake up in the morning he is the reason I smile. As soon as I open an eye he is staring at me slowly wagging his tail. My entire life and routine is him. When I’m doing anything in the house I talk to him, have conversations. How will I be able to do anything without it reminding me of him. How will I not feel so damn empty. It hurts so much to think about and he’s not gone yet, I can’t even imagine the horrible pain when he is. So even though I don’t quite understand that pain yet, I understand how much you love your baby and I understand how your entire world revolved around her. It’s just not fair that we get such little time with them. But in that short time they brought us so much happiness and love that we will never forget. I just hope they know that. I am thinking of you and you are not alone. And I do believe that they will always be by our sides even if we can’t see them.

I’m so sorry. One thing you said was that everything reminds you of her, that’s tough now but soon you’ll appreciate it. Dog lovers are never gonna forget their pups, the best you can do is think about them and smile about all the great times, it doesn’t happen quick but eventually it will. My first dog was a black lab, Buddy, in 2009 I had to put him down at 11 from cancer, worst day of my life by far, that includes family members passing away including my parents. It’s different with a pet. I’ve had to put 3 down now and they were all devastating, but I think about them now and smile. They are all over my house, pictures of them but also their spirit, they helped make me the person I am. I hope you can take comfort in knowing that you gave your pup something that a very small percentage of dogs get, a loving family and a great life. It’s gonna be an awful few days no doubt but it gets better, just don’t try to keep it out of your mind, the more you think of her the more chances you’ll have to smile about her like I do with mine. Yeah, unfortunately. Our first lab was 14, our second lab was only 11 when we put him down after spending $8,000 for cancer surgery and treatment. Our current dog is a Red Bone Coone hound from a kill shelter. Very sweet boy, but hounds are tough to train, but he’s funny and quirky when he’s not barking at everything that moves. 😀

I went from labs and one pit mix who were all well behaved and just sweet dogs, now we have a Jack Russel Rat Terrier mix and he is a HANDFUL!! Great dog and full of personality and a very good dog right now when he’s tired but man oh man he has a mind of his own and thinks he runs the house. Thank you so much for sharing this. I just lost my boy at 13 last week. A day hasn’t gone by where I haven’t broken down sobbing, and I can’t imagine ever feeling any sense of normal again. So many of the posts on pet loss and grief are from people still in the thick of their grief – and it honestly makes me feel worse hearing how they are so broken just like I am. Reading that you have lost beloved dogs and were able to still open your heart up to more and keep going, gives me just a little bit of hope.

You’ll be okay, it definitely gets better, obviously everyone’s different but if you think of all the joy your pup gave you you’ll have lots of happy tears to go along with the sad ones, hopefully you can look back and laugh at some of the things you went through. 13 years is a long time, lots of great years there, it’s gonna take time but just think how much you have to think back on to keep your pups spirit alive. What was his name? I just posted a little bit ago, take a look, maybe you’ll get some laughs.

Its been 5 years since I lost my little heart, and we still talk about him and to him all the time. The difference is you eventually start to heal and can even smile and laugh about their silly selves. We tell our newer pups about his unique antics. We talk about him welcoming other family members we’ve lost on the rainbow bridge. He holds a special place always. But it’s a happy place, knowing I was so lucky to get to have him in my life. Your little one is still a part of you. You will heal, and you get to keep the happy memories forever. 🫂

I said goodbye to two furbabies last year (both well into their teens. it’s never enough time) and I feel you so much. It’s hard as hell for the first days, even weeks, but slowly I started feeling better…paying extra attention to my other old gal and then we adopted a new shelter pup about 6 months later (a happy surprise). I’ve come to feel that the only reason dogs have shorter lives than we do is so we can give love to more of them. I will say this too: you never stop missing them, and that hole in your heart never gets smaller, but your world gets bigger around it with time. Looking at happy photos and watching videos of my pups playing together doesn’t make me sob anymore. You’ll get there too. But right now, let yourself cry. I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending you hugs across the internet. 💜

I’ve been there also, it’s never easy. When my first dog was put to sleep, i had said my goodbyes and he had been to the vet and came back so many times that I thought he would just come back again and fell back asleep rather than say goodbye. I went out that day, when I got home at night I expected to hear him lazily getting up from his bed round the other side of the kitchen counter to greet me like always, but he didnt. When I went round the other side I saw his bed with his blanket neatly folded and his toys placed on top. I broke down, and it haunted me for months after. When I finally saw my friends and told them what I was going through most of them smirked or looked about as if in awkward anguish, I could see they thought it was funny (part of many reasons I dont speak to them today despite having known some of them for 20 plus years/grew up together). So with this I want to say believe me I feel your pain, I feel for you. I take thanks in that we both gave our dogs a good and happy life before they went, and i am so sure we will see them again someday.
