What fatigue? There’s been less than 20 episodes of GoT material in the past 6 years lol
R
ReMapper • 191 points
Right? I don’t have fatigue I have trauma.
M
Mogilny89Leafs • 45 points
My trauma comes from GRRM not finishing the books.

Don’t let decision makers at hbo off the hook so easily

I think GRRM is the one with GoT fatigue!

If it’s a good adaptation of the novellas then yeah I could see this being a nice breath of fresh air. Light and fun.

I’ve seen the first two episodes and it’s exactly this. Faithful, but with a couple additions that make use of the extra runtime to enrich the characters a bit, and much brighter both visually and tonally than GOT. Still set in that trademark GRRM “things go wrong” world but also with much more joy and entertainment in it. The side characters feel like actual people living their lives.

I’m curious how they handle the pacing of doing one season per story because the stories are so short they could have adapted them all in one season and still have episodes to spare. Hopefully that means they flesh out the places they visit and the characters they meet in a lot more detail.

That’s what they’ve been doing so far. Stuff like Dunk asking the lord’s to vouch for him when he tries to enter the lists was made a bit longer and richer, and the secondary characters get some more time spent with them too. Lyonel Baratheon gets a couple really good enriching scenes that aren’t in the novella but absolutely fit in. A lot of dunk’s internal monologue is either adapted into conversation or into flashbacks to his youth with Ser Arlan as well, so they serves to bulk things out a bit. The tourney and castle Ashford feels really alive. They’ve clearly not spared any expense on the cast and sets because it all looks totally real and lived in, but in a realistic way not in a gritty-for-the-sake of it. It’s got a Glastonbury vibe to it, lots of people from all sections of society having a good time together. There are plenty of scenes of Dunk just walking through the tourney grounds that are really fun to watch, which once again is something you can only fully get in a visual medium.

This is exactly what I’d hoped it’d be. Cheers.

That is great. I loved the books but there were some characters I would’ve loved to have more time with to get to know them even a little bit before things start really moving.

Don’t suck me in! I can’t take another 8 seasons with dismal ending!
C
Captainatom931 • 11 points
Don’t worry – having read the novellas they’re all very self contained stories. I think it’s the sort of show where you can watch a season here or there without much need for investment. They’re only 6 episodes of 30-40 minutes that forms a complete story, and with considerably fewer characters than in GOT (and only one POV). So like, if season 5 sucks ass it shouldn’t poison the well in the way later seasons of GOT did because there’s already a complete story to enjoy in there.

I went to a preview on Friday and its a really good adaptation. Incredibly faithful whilst adding sprinkling of extra stuff to bulk it out – funny cutaways and gags mainly!

Just be ready for the mass of people online going in blind and hating it and the cast because it doesn’t feel like GoT

GRRM was happy about the first season. But we’ll see once they run out of source material

I mean it gets kinda dark at times and the stakes do become relevant to the whole Seven Kingdoms

GoT is one of the franchises that I think suffers the least from fatigue. We get like a HotD season once every two years and it isn’t even guaranteed to be good. Also the first paragraph of this article makes me think the show is going to open with explicitly showing some guy shitting himself.
D
DeadDropCourier • 166 points
I really wasn’t a fan of HotD season 2 personally. Felt like they were just spinning their wheels

Both HotD S2 and TLoU S2 suffered from creatives who thought that their idea of the show/ story was better than the source material.

Altered Carbon season one was awesome tho

I love Mackie, but the really needed to cast a guy that could match the first guys energy. He played Mackie instead. Removing the noir vibes really hurt the show too.

Kinnaman really grew on me as an actor. Both he and Thomas Jane found the right tone for detectives in sci-fi!

Sure, if you never read the book(s), then ignorance is bliss I guess. As someone who has, in fact, read all three of the books, I couldn’t stand the idiotic changes that were made for the adaptation. S1 *looked* great, but could have been so much better if they’d just stuck with what was written.

Add Locke and Key, Y the Last Man, and DMZ to this list.
M

Locke and Key was particularly painful. The source material is incredible.
L
lozo78 • 1 points
Y the Last Man was such a let down. It could’ve been so damn good!
N
nunboi • 1 points
Agree to disagree, I’ve read all of the source material there and found them very lacking and not really things that led themselves to be adapted into good shows. They struggled to make Y into a show for ages and it was never going to work.

im still salty about wheel of time, what a bastardization of the source material

How bad is it?

Perrin has a wife, who he accidentally kills, in the first episode so….yeaaaaaaaa, plots a bit fucked from the start Lots of stupid design decisions too, like the damane’s collar is replaced by a fucking golden pacifier https://i.redd.it/bvv98zjadzcb1.png
J
JohnLockeNJ • 6 points
If you didn’t link to the screenshot I would have thought you were messing with me about the pacifier. How can they change the collar? The visual of a collar and leash is so critical in showing the master/slave relationship.

The first season is pretty bad. The pilot is poor, it very briefly finds itself as its own thing in the middle, then they had to break for covid, lost an actor and rewrote some stuff, then the last episode of the season is just completely stupid. The second season was an improvement, not fantastic by any means, and some bits were still underwhelming (the Horn of Valere). The third season skipped an entire book but stuck to the one it did adapt fairly close and the actors were actually given dialogue and roles to work with and overall the season was actually quite good.

Would you suggest someone who’s read the books to start with season 3? Maybe in a few years they’ll give Brandon Sanderson the latest AI tool and he’ll go back and fix everything.
C

But unfortunately most people already had moved on from the tv series, so the 3rd season ended as the least watched, and Amazon cancelled the show shortly after its end.
T

Exactly! I find it odd how some people on this sub can’t seem to comprehend this.
