I live in the US – bring it on, Finland!

As an American, I immediately thought.. If I get sent to Finland, I’ll go see a doctor! haha

I know, right?

Exactly what I thought too. I haven’t been to the doctor or dentist in like 10 years.

lots of people can’t afford medical care here and dentists are NEVER free

Healthcare is a luxury in the US, unfortunately.

I’d have my husband get a colonoscopy.. his family has a history of cancer but a colonoscopy would somehow still cost us like $1000+ with a doctors referral and health insurance so we haven’t done it

I only go to hospitals for emergencies. Many Americans, even well employed ones, are the same. The last time I was admitted to a hospital for a kidney stone, I had to stay 3 days. They billed me over $300,000.

We need Mexicans here! All Nordic countries have a strong texmex style taco culture but Finland at least has very few Mexican people, let alone restaurants. We don’t have the right ingredients so you’ll have to improvise a bit, but Mexican tacos would probably do very well here
O
Ok-Highway-5247 • 13 points
I can ship ingredients to you. There’s an amazing Mexican restaurant near me that makes home made sauces. If any Finns are interested, I’ll see what I can do?
K
Kattimatti666 • 10 points
Haha, awesome. But I just tried shipping something small from here to the US and it was really tricky and expensive. I hope that the current situation clears up and we can trade normally again. So I really appreciate the gesture, really kind of you. But it might be more complicated than you think! Ps. I was in California once and loved the Mexican food there, ate it every day. Had excellent Carnitas in Palm Springs and looked at the dried chili section in a random Walmart with absolute jealousy!

If you live/visit Helsinki, there’s a Mexican store Dos Tecolotes in Hämeentie: they have a good selection of salsas, dried chilis, condiments and even some Mexican candy like Pulparindo. Obviously not much fresh stuff and the prices are specialty store prices, but cheaper than shipping (or going to Mexico).

I remember having been to a texmex place in Levi that had reindeer taco’s. Interesting cultural fusion.

My sister and I have been planning a trip to our great grandparents’s hometown in Sweden so we wanted to see what the food options were because my sister has autism and ARFID. I was completely shocked to see what Swedes put on their tacos.

Oh no, I’m now forced to live in a first world country with a small passive income apparently without the need of working, a free apartment in a city of my preference and I can bring my family with me, what a disgrace, what will I ever do? /s
K
Kattimatti666 • 14 points
Haha, yes it’s really hard I know. I used a whole minute to come up with the witness protection backstory, I just wanted to know people’s thoughts about living in Finland. I’m sure that you would appreciate many things about life here, but I can also promise that your Colombian genes might take a while to adjust to our weather. Life here also means life without sunlight between Nov and Feb, and going out sometimes means that your face begins tingling the second you step out and sometimes the air is so cold that breathing makes you cough. So yes, we have it good but you have to be a bit crazy to stay here.
A
Altruistic-Status121 • 5 points
I think, and in a more serious way, that while I probably take the offer, specially because seems beneficial for my family (the small ones in particular) than for me, it will be super tough, I have a relatively good life in Colombia, so. However, I should say that I understand why most of the people in the “third world” will answer without a second thought with a yes and why the ones able to find a job and everything will stay there even if they totally hate the weather or are super lonely (I know that’s a common complaint between latino immigrants). I think is kind of the Maslow Pyramid, you can deal with shitty weather, you can deal with loneliness, and still have a decent life, but being hungry, facing violence, living with the level of uncertainty that we deal with here? That’s another thing.
K
Kattimatti666 • 2 points
I understand. I didn’t mean that bad weather is as bad as having real problems. We are very lucky and I love this place despite my complaints. I have no idea about problems like you described and how it is to live when you have to worry about things like that.

* Learn to speak Finnish. * Buy cross country skis. * Go to the sauna.

Very good answer, all three are excellent ideas. I have a joke about learning Finnish: Learning Finnish is painful, confusing and frustrating, but if you don’t quit and keep going, you will someday be able to speak to 5,5 million people who don’t want to talk to you!

Typical Finnish humour 🤣. I actually have several Finnish friends, and they all say they don’t like talking to people, but they are warm and hilarious.
B
Boring_Intern_6394 • 5 points
Why is learning Finnish difficult?
E
Eleiao • 27 points
Mostly because it has nothing in common with any western european languages.
S
Sagaincolours • 3 points
It has nothing in common with any European languages. It is not even related to the larger Indo-European language group, so languages like Iranian and Hindi.
R
RRautamaa • 14 points
It’s unrelated to English. Or Russian. Or Portuguese. The only people that really have an edge are those that speak another Baltic-Finnic language.
F
FirefighterPleasant8 • 16 points
Yes. I’m Swedish and can confirm that no native Swede gets a word of what our Finnish neighbors are saying. It’s as far away as English and Thai. Not. A. Word.
B
Big-Wrangler2078 • 9 points
English is fairly close to Swedish I think. Modern English was influenced a lot by the vikings so you still see a lot of shared etymology and some common grammatical rules. Finnish on the other hand is just really out there. But if I can choose where in Finland I’d go, then a Finland-Swedish speaking area would probably be a lot easier to acclimate to.
T
toastedclown • 5 points
I think they meant the similarity between Swedish and Finnish is equivalent to that between English and Thai. Swedish is definitely among the easiest languages for English speakers to learn.
C
Corfiz74 • 4 points
Isn’t it related to Hungarian? Finno-Hungarian languages?
R
RRautamaa • 4 points
Yes, but the relation is distant, a bit like between English and Farsi.
A
Anxious-Struggle281 • 3 points
it is related to Estonian language though
I
iwantunity • 16 points
there are I believe around 15 tenses and grammar is the basis of the language.

We have a root word that we add different parts to for different meanings. The root word changes depending on the ending too. Root word Oppia = To learn Oppisinkohan = I wonder if I would learn Oppimaisillaan = about to learn Oppimatta = without learning (He) oppisivat = (they) would learn (He) eivät oppisi = (they) wouldn’t learn Oppiakseen = In order to learn Oppiessa = while learning etc. 15 different ones, plus negative sentences and plural ones. But hey, no gender!

The Finns never met a conjugation they didn’t like. Even Duolingo gave up on Finnish – they end lessons pretty early on and move to review.

It is very, very different from languages of the rest of europe. It follows a very different gramatical framework.
N
notcomplainingmuch • 2 points
It’s challenging, but fairly simple. Written Finnish is very regular and it’s pronounced exactly as written, so if you learn the grammatical rules and enough vocabulary, you can speak formal Finnish quite quickly. The structure is different from Western European languages in that it’s the endings that tell you what’s going on, instead of prepositions. There are also no noun or pronomen genders, which makes it simpler than many other languages. There are no definite or indefinite forms like “the” vs. “a”. Pronomina are usually optional. Examples: (Minä) Istun tuolilla – I am sitting on a/the chair Istun tuolissa – I am sitting in a/the (arm)chair Nousen tuolilta – I get up from (on top) of the chair Nousen autosta – I am getting out from the car Nousen autoon – I am stepping into the car Nousenko autosta? – Am I getting out of the car? Nousisin tuolille – I would step onto the chair. Nousisinko autosta? – Would I get out of the car? Voinko nousta tuolista? – Can I get out of the (arm)chair. Voisinko nousta tuolista? – Could I get out of the (arm)chair? Etc. This is all fairly easy, but there are then you encounter the spoken language, which is very varied, sloppy and basically wrong. So that’s another learning curve. Then you start with dialects and slang. It’s still much easier to master than English, if you include the complete vocabulary and all grammar, idioms or collective nouns, which hardly exist in Finnish. Starting is harder but mastering is much, much easier.

This was my thought. Considering the lack of snow I’ve lived through this year, I’ll be picking a snow filled location and enjoy being outside.

This was January 1st in the south. The entire country has been snowy since then. I know the pain of winter without snow my friend, I hope it changes there. A town up north had -42C a week ago. https://preview.redd.it/p50p64uybldg1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f10ce957913d7777f91fe9fee26c06fa735028f7
