Pleased with the Rose Byrne win, she’s phenomenal in the movie.
M
MoonMan997 • 14 points
Very curious to see which way the Academy go because Byrne is amounting more support by the day. Buckley (whilst great in Hamnet) is in a role more often rewarded by the Academy, but she’s also far from overdue, no doubt she’ll get another chance. There’s a strong chance we see all the acting winners be for fictional characters again, like in 2023.
Q
QuestionDry2490 • 10 points
There’s basically a 99% chance that Buckley is going to sweep this award season.

skarsgard seems to be benefiting from penn/del toro splitting the vote imo

Penn deserves gold man. What a performance. I love BDT but I have no idea what he’s doing in this race
L
LazarusRising22 • 13 points
I just have to feel that Penn’s likability/issues plus this being his 3rd Oscar makes it a lot less likely to happen
Q
QuestionDry2490 • 5 points
If there was a performance to give him a third Oscar for, it was this one.
H
HoodsBreath10 • 7 points
I agree. He had an awesome character but Penn was a much larger role
C
chanma50 • 5 points
Fair or not, it at least partially comes down to likeability. Benicio del Toro is a very likeable guy playing a fun and likeable character, so people gravitate towards him. Sean Penn is an asshole playing an asshole, plus he also already has 2 Oscars, and that’s probably holding him back significantly. Like sure, maybe Lockjaw is the better performance from a technical standpoint, but it’s hard not to root for the “few small beers” guy. There’s also the factor of double nominees splitting the vote and allowing a 3rd option (Skarsgård) to sneak up the middle. Sometimes with double nominees, one is so much stronger that it doesn’t matter; for example, Hollywood veteran Jamie Lee Curtis was able to steamroll newcomer Stephanie Hsu (ironic, given that Hsu gave the far stronger performance, but c’est la vie). But I think del Toro and Penn are pretty evenly matched here in terms of strengths, and that hurts both of them.

A question about the Cinematic/BO category. I don’t understand it. It’s been at least 5 years since I’ve paid attention to the awards season, so pardon my ignorance. I can see why Sinners won, it had a fantastic domestic success, incredible drops and such. But why was KPDH above Zootopia 2 in the odds for this one? Why was KPDH even nominated in the first place? Cinematic and Box office achievement? Am I missing something?
C
chanma50 • 54 points
It’s a relatively new award (in its 3rd year), but the following is the criteria for eligibility for this category: >An award to recognize the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence, as determined by Golden Globes voters. >Productions are eligible for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement if they earn a gross box office receipt total of at least $150 million worldwide during the qualifying year (of which $100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office), and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership according to recognized trusted industry sources within the qualifying year. >Productions that are released after November 22 may qualify based on projected box office performance and/or streaming views from recognized industry sources. *KPop Demon Hunters* obtained the “commensurate digital streaming viewership” (and then some), so it was eligible. It’s basically an award for “Best Movie That People Saw”, as opposed to “Movie That The Most People Saw” or something. Can also be seen as “Consolation Prize Because We’re Not Giving You Best Picture”, which applied to *Sinners* (lost to *Hamnet*), as well as previous winners *Barbie* (lost to *Poor Things*) and *Wicked* (lost to *Emilia Pérez*).
H
howieeiwoh • 21 points
Then it’s just a completely misleading name for the category…
C
chanma50 • 46 points
I mean, the entire existence of the award is silly for sure, but in terms of what they were going for (“Let’s give an award to something people saw”), I think the criteria makes sense. Like unless they just automatically give it to the movie that made the most money, this is what you’re gonna do instead.
H
howieeiwoh • 5 points
I understand that tbh, I don’t think it should just be given to the biggest grosser, i think rewarding like the biggest surprise at the BO, or the best week-to-week sustained performance at the BO would be more than fine. I just think the words “Cinematic” and “Box office” are misleading when nominees are not required to be in cinemas nor be box office hits.
K
kennyandkennyandkenn • 22 points
you are thinking way too deep and taking the name of the award far too literally than anyone else is, including the Golden Globes itself try not to make sense of things that were never intended to have much sense in the first place, it’ll just frustrate you for no reason
C
chanma50 • 6 points
I think that’s a fair question, in terms of whether streaming films should even be eligible to begin with; obviously they wanted them to. But this is actually the first time a streaming film has been nominated, the first 2 years had all theatrical films. But with *KPop Demon Hunters*, because the streaming viewership was so overwhelmingly high, I think it’s indisputable that a lot of people watched it, so I guess to me it meets the spirit of what they were going for with this award.
Z
Zalvren • 7 points
And it actually got a theatrical release after because of its success in streaming. That is in itself some sort of cinematic achievement, it’s the first movie to do that if I’m not mistaken (some streaming movies have an initial theatrical release before streaming or day and date but not after)
G
greentea1985 • 3 points
It had amazing per-theater estimates for both of its limited runs in theaters, done in part to qualify for award season. The first run had great numbers in spite of AMC refusing to carry it due to a feud with Netflix. The second run wasn’t quite as impressive, but it was weeks after the first run. If you think of streaming-only as the equivalent of direct-to-video, a movie that had a DTV release got good enough word-of-mouth to get a limited theatrical run that made crazy numbers.
H
howieeiwoh • 1 points
I think either the name should be changed, or the rules to not allow streaming movies. Not that I particularly care about the award itself being sensible, but it’s just degrading cinema in a way, when the entire industry is already trending downwards. You can probably tell I feel strongly about the whole cinema vs streaming ordeal, so this kinda feels like a spit in the face of cinema, in a way.
T
thegracelesswonder • 2 points
It’s really not that deep dude
G
greentea1985 • 2 points
Yes. It’s intended to award the biggest unexpected hit or the movie that took the most risks and became a hit. I would have been fine with either Sinners or KDH taking it, as both were smash hit original IPs. In some ways, Sinners took the bigger risk going with a wide release in cinemas, while KDH went the modern equivalent of direct-to-video and building viewer word of mouth.
K
KingMario05 • 10 points
A pity award, lol.
S
sbenthuggin • 1 points
Not really. It’s more like an audience-pleaser award. A lot of ppl complain, “they’re always giving awards to shit no one say” so this is there way of being like, “fine, fuck it, omg here’s an award to tthe general audience’s favorite fucking movie I guess” lmao. Imo I think it’s actually worth it to have this category, as it at least satisfies and brings attention to the awards cuz their favorite film won, and might bring more ppl to the theaters to see the lesser known films they didn’t hear about. I mean, it’s not likely to do much, but I think it’s still nice to have.
Z
Zalvren • 8 points
It is and it’s a useless category. It exists just because the awards are always ignoring the popular movies in the real categories and they want audiences to be interested in their ceremony but if there is only movies no one saw, it’s harder to do that
S
sbenthuggin • 3 points
I mean, the idea of bringing general audiences attentions to the awards ceremony with a, “hey look! ur favorite movie won!!” might be worth it solely for getting eyes on the less popular films. Imo it’s worth it for that alone, and it’s kinda fun to see which bigger movies might win, too. I can almost guarantee a comic movie is gonna get that win one of these days too – possibly The Batman 2 might be the 1st if I were to guess – and I can imagine it’s def gonna garner a lot of attention because of that. Like if they did this 2 decades ago, The Dark Knight def would’ve won it. And the simple idea of that happening is fun! I like it. Though I would’ve preferred it to be in best picture nom, but either way, I think it’s a good thing.
M
MKT_Pro • 22 points
They treat it like a consolation prize for top 5 films that don’t win any other major awards. Sinners, Barbie, Wicked.
S
sbenthuggin • -2 points
Eh. I think it’s genuinely more of a, “what’s the best popular film” award thing, quite literally. It’s not a consolation prize or anything. If it were, then Barbie and Wicked definitely wouldn’t have won it. The Zone of Interest or Tar would’ve been more likely, those years. It just seems like a consolation cuz Sinners just so happened to be both really fucking great and also made a really good amount of money in a very competitive year when it came to best picture awards.
S
SilverRoyce • 10 points
I don’t think we have a particularly clear sense of the award’s voting dynamics yet. However, on paper, the award is “just” the equivalent of having a “best small/specialty picture” award one might create if only big tentpoles won best picture (that sort of thing basically existed in the first year of the oscars where “Sunrise” won best artistic film while Wings won overall best picture. “Cinematic/BO” just is supposed to have “moderate/large sized hit” as a filter instead of a budget/boxoffice cap. Nothing about the award description as I recall it is supposed to give a film a benefit for being more of a hit after meeting minimum qualifications (however, as you note, the nominees can imply otherwise)
S
salcedoge • 5 points
it’s the “I’m surprised it made that much money” award
C
chuckdee68 • 7 points
It’s the condescending award for “We’re not going to give you anything, even though you should have won something.”
S
sbenthuggin • 1 points
I feel like y’all only feel this way cuz of Sinners. In fact, i can probably say I know. Barbie and Wicked 100% did not deserve to win anything other than maybe their music categories, in the previous years. Which I know Barbie did. So we all know damn well the category doesn’t exist in the way you described. You only feel this way cuz y’all stan Sinners, despite not having seen any of the other INCREDIBLE films this year that all equally deserve a possible win. This has gotta be the most competitive year for best picture…possibly ever. There is no outlier here like Moonlight or Everywhere All At Once for their respective years. Each of the best picture noms this year, including Sinners, deserves to win. though OBAA’s timeliness w the ICE shit and the fact PTA is overdo a win is likely why it’s leading in comparison to the others. Still, this award does NOT exist as a consolation prize. It exists to satisfy general audiences, bring their eyes towards the awards, and hopefully gets ppl to watch these smaller films that also deserve love and attention. Sinners just so happened to be an incredible hit at the box office, while also being really fucking good. So it kinda just wins this category by default, cuz it’s the only best picture nom to make money lmao. So let’s learn to take a win where we get it. Sinners deserves it. As do all these other films.

Cinematic/Box Office Achievement feels like a consolation prize.

I’m sure the bigwigs in Hollywood and trades who downplayed Sinners’ box office run are satisfied that it won this award. It makes it look like they were disproven but in reality they get the last laugh as it’s not considered as prestigious an award.

M

Not in America these days. Same as black mirror or Dont Look Up. Its not funny. Its not comedy. There isnt a joke with a punchline that makes us chuckle or feel good. The only joke he makes is us looking in the mirror and telling us we are a fuckin tragedy. I guess thats where the funny is, at our own expense. But sadly that will fall flat in a room of millionaires or audiences not feeling absolutely devastated.
B
