Short track replay KSG with *another* fall and penalty? Guuurl… Hopefully the injured Polish skater is ok. Since the skates are razor sharp, that was probably a very clean cut and should heal well.

Corinne Stoddard really put in the work for 1500m bronze Seeing that grind pay off on the world stage is what the Olympics are all about

So happy to see her go home with a medal in the end after so many frustrating races, falls and DQ’s. Nice redemption story for her and the entire U.S. short track team.

Really curious what percentage of The Canadian population will be watching Sunday morning?
L

It won’t reach 2010 vancouver levels due to time zones and hype probably, but I think it’s gonna be close with game 7 of the world series last year. Also don’t ask me how I know broadcast numbers from Canada, I went down a rabbithole on wikipedia a few days ago lol

Today I learnt I’ve never seen a USA win a men’s Olympic hockey final live. I knew about the story of 1980, but I didn’t knew that was their last gold.

One not-so-fun factoid is that due to how schedules were set up at the time, it wasn’t shown live in most of the country, but rather on tape delay. There were a few places where it aired live because people were able to get the Canadian feed near the border or in at least one case (I only know this because a sports team handed out a facsimile page of the morning after the win decades later) where a cable system “accidentally” pulled down the live ABC feed from satellite and aired that instead.
V

And hopefully you won’t see it on Sunday either.
S

Yup. We did win the most recent Worlds for the first time in over 90 years this past summer but that tournament always had a little bit of an asterisk to it due to it’s timing
A

Their 2002 and 2010 gold medal games were quite fun.
J
jujubeans8500 • 6 points
yes it’s why we keep talking about it all the time!! lol although it really was a big deal bc it was an all college squad defeating the Soviet Union (which wasnt even the gold medal game)

Unironically, the number one reason why the Olympics will never get get a single universal host is because of television and streaming and time zones. You going to tell NBC– one of if not THE biggest bankroller of the IOC due to the rights deal– that the IOC will personally build a permanent summer games site in Europe that makes it so that there will never be live primetime coverage of the Olympics on American TV again? And on the flipside, are you going to tell the IOC delegates from Europe that the Winter Olympics need to be held in Salt Lake City from now on so that it works well for US and Canadian television? Never gonna happen. (I wouldn’t be shocked though if maybe they one day have a “we’re going to rotate between like a half-dozen global cities in major world powers or sports hotbeds and anyone else is going to have to truly blow us away if they want to host” type situation, sort of like how the NFL has basically five or six stadiums that host Super Bowls but every now and then another city gets thrown in because they built a stadium or are offering a gimmick).

there have been olympics in “good” timezones (Rio, SLC, etc) and NBC still tape delays everything so they can have a produced show
W
Wheeljack7799 • 5 points
Actually… Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City would be perfect from a European TV-broadcast point of view. The events would typically start when we get home from work and end around bedtime. I still have fond memories of Salt Lake City 2002 and Vancouver 2010 since I at the time had a job I couldn’t watch TV whilst doing.

Do Europeans not go to bed till 4am? Because that’s actually when the games would end for Euros if they were always in SLC. Looking at the Olympics schedule the first events start at about 8:00 but the last event might not end till 23:00. So, in actuality you’d get the first half of the day but never the second half. So, the Norwegians like you would be fine since most of the events that are competitive in occurred during the first half of the day. But Germans and Dutch would complain since all their events tended to occur in the latter half of the day. So, therefore when they likely went to bed.

This European doesn’t
C
ContinuumGuy • 5 points
While true, I think the issue with it wouldn’t be TV so much as pride and such since the IOC is a primarily-European-founded institution and many of the Winter Olympic sports were created by or at least popularized by Europeans (hence why it’s called ALPine skiing and not ROCKY MOUNTAINS skiing).

> (I wouldn’t be shocked though if maybe they one day have a “we’re going to rotate between like a half-dozen global cities in major world powers or sports hotbeds and anyone else is going to have to truly blow us away if they want to host” type situation) I think this is the best option considering how much debt most cities get into hosting the Olympics. Have a couple of set cities that get rotated among with existing facilities that will need minimal renovation/upkeep. It’ll be a tiny bit less interesting but I think it’s a lot better to have the Olympics be sustainable.

Its worth noting that, age aside, he still wouldn’t be eligible for the USA. At some point, you are locked in with the country you have already represented.
P

This is how Americans think, and have done so for ages. Nothing against you, but then Americans bitch at Eileen Gu. Absolute hypocrisy.
M
Mister-Psychology • 1 points
He’s joking. Ovechkin is 40. Plus he’s a Putin supporter the team would hate him.
