Ski mo I really hope the other events in this discipline are more enthralling because the sprint soured me on skimo pretty quickly. I was expecting something more like xc skiing but going up a mountain for several miles…not whatever we saw in the sprint.

Apparently the IOC wanted an event that was “fast” and this is the “worst” version of the sport…and the team relay still to come is a better representation. At least that is what was explained to me when I commented on this being not what I expected

Catching up on the ski mo now – I don’t mind a new event and this is good base but I would expand it to multiple. I’d have an event where they take telemarks up the downhill course (or equivalent) and then rip the skins off and ski down, that would put the *mo* in skimo, call it skimo grande.

Yeah based on the name, I think I expected more of an endurance sport. Instead it was more like a three-minute high-difficulty ski obstacle course. Since it ended up being the sprint discipline at this Olympics, I’d be interested in seeing what some non-sprint skimo is like.

I’m desperately hoping that US colleges will continue to fund Olympic sport, women’s sports especially. Title IX has been so significant for the US and I worry about backsliding with this administration. So many women’s hockey players went through the NCAA for example. Gymnastics and track too.

I would think that most colleges have reached a point where the backlash for defunding women’s sports would be so swift and strong, that they wouldn’t do it even if they were allowed to. The backwaters of the US (and their political leaders) might be backwards, but the college-going population rightly demands more of their institutions.

Ski Mountaineering ain’t it. No matter how tired they are and how impressive it was going uphill, who can clip in and out of skis the quickest is the lamest way to decide Olympic medals.

The reporter did nothing wrong in asking that question to Eileen Gu, he basically just asked her if she’s a glass half full or glass half empty person. There are athletes who view anything other than total victory as total failure, it wasn’t crazy for him to ask her the question

Now that figure skating is over, I would love for the event to have a complete rework. Gymnastics has eight opportunities for women’s gold medals for individuals and six for men’s. I feel like figure skating should be the same way (but like six for men’s, women’s, pairs, and ice dancing, each, and the schedule would have two events per day, perhaps), but unsure how that would work. I find it absurd that only two performances is what determines whether selected athletes get a medal or not (one short and one free). (Totally not saying this because I’m sad that Ilia and Amber didn’t get gold in individuals.)

Perhaps they could give a medal for the short/rhythm program, free skate/dance, and overall? Three medals total. The ISU does something similar, where they give small medals for each program and then the “big” medal overall.

If you liked figure skating, tune in for the gala. All individual medalists and select invited skaters will perform exhibition routines. These routines are (usually) different from anything they do in competition. There are no rules, no tech requirements, just fun! The men’s, pairs, and ice dance exhibition skaters are confirmed. Women’s list is incoming – I would expect Gutman from Italy and two to three other skaters from a different country than the medalists/Italy.

There’s no strict criteria IIRC, but it’s often skaters from the host countries + popular skaters/folks with entertaining exhibition routines. I’d also expect some variety in countries, where the invited skaters are from different countries than the medalists.

Figure Skating I have to imagine what clinched it for Alysa Liu was her incredible rhythm and how she nailed a few incredible artistic elements right on the beat. Especially the section towards the end where she spins out across the ice on her knees through a vocal run in the music and then a few beats later pops up a hand flourish in a grand jete perfectly on time to a musical flourish. It was just perfect and so smart to have a program where these elements dramatically complimenting the music are possible. I think the slower, less dynamic tracks that the other two medalists performed don’t have the same opportunities for those showstopping moments because they lack a strong beat and instead rely on the emotive performance of the skater. Alysa had all that and more with her infectious enthusiasm. How phenomenal!

IIRC, in the last Olympics Nathan Chen timed one of his quads in the long program to when Rocket Man really takes off, and it was absolutely spectacular. So awesome when the elements are synchronised to the music.

USA won its most gold medals in 2002 in Salt Lake City with 10, and is 1 gold away from matching that. USA won its most total medals in 2010 in Vancouver, with 37. USA has 27 and probably won’t reach that (or 34 in 2002) but is 1 medal away from matching its total in 2014 in Sochi, its 3rd best ever.
