Yep, I’ve seen him in many roles since then, but the first thing I ever saw him in was LAH and it was one of my favorite movies as a kid so I saw him in it a lot. Rewatching it as an adult, I realized that John Practice was played by F Murray Abraham and the animated cat Whiskers was voiced by Danny Devito. And of course I was delighted when Benedict showed up as Tywin in Game of Thrones haha. My point is that that Last Action Hero might secretly be the greatest movie ever made.

It is interesting that Benedict was meant to be played by Rickman, but by casting Charles Dance it kind of cemented him as a similar suave and dangerously intelligent bad guy. I always personally think of Rickman, Dance and David Warner as the triumvirate of suave villains, though Malcolm McDowell gave it a damn good shot in his later career to become the fourth member.

God everything about that film was such a vibe… the soundtrack (in particular the use of Shriekback’s “This Big Hush,”) the cinematography, Peterson’s simmering rage lurking just beneath the surface, Cox’s Lecter, >!The Freddy Lounds kill!<, the half-stocking mask on Dollarhyde, the tiger scene... man that film has lived in my head since I first saw it.

This. Seeing this film on Siskel & Ebert introduced me to Tom Noonan as an actor & filmmaker. Also, I didn’t even realize Noonan was Kelso when I saw “Heat” in 1995, and I **loved** “Heat”!

His performance in Manhunter is incredible. The character is horrifying and yet Noonan brought a lot of sadness and vulnerability to the table at the same time. Also great in the X-Files episode ‘Paper Hearts’. And everything really. Really gifted guy.

Ehhh, I don’t know- Silence of the Lambs is a near perfect movie. But Manhunter isn’t far behind- and is criminally overlooked these days (although it finally seems to be getting the love it deserves). It’s certainly much much better than Red Dragon.

Yeah that was a really silly comment. Manhunter has been rated highly since release. It was part of my college syllabus in the 90s. When Red Dragon came out the consensus was very much that Manhunter was better (particularly as Michael Mann didn’t have to shoehorn Anthony Hopkins into any scenes).

Hopkins is on stage for most of Lambs and he defeats a bunch of security guards with super powers. I want to meet his personal trainer. Didnt find him scary at all. Kick his damn knee out. See if Medicare covers it. Buffalo Bill was just gross. Does he prefer scented or unscented lotions? Foster was great. Why the f-ck do all psychopaths in 90s films, even if they are middle aged have super powers that would impress Nick Fury? Do they have membership cards for the Legion of Doom? Somebody call Batman. /rant Manhunter was far superior. Brian Cox was cold and calculating, Noonan had depth, you had to keep up with the procedural stuff and Mann moved fast. Vastly better and intelligent film.
