a) Figure skating and Taylor Swift both have a large fandom of girls, and b) a large portion of competitive female skaters are girls or teens, not adults. Also there’s the concept of “girlhood” as a cultural thing uniting adult women with girls through the shared experiences of having been girls once ourselves. Every adult woman in figure skating started off as a little girl who wanted to skate.

Girlhood to me is almost MAGA coded- it’s like…keeping young women (again, I’m not taking about minors) infantilized. It is creepy to me and one of the things that turns me off about Taylor. Let’s celebrate these young women being young women. Why are we going back to girlhood? It’s so weird. Edit- the girlhood experience only makes sense to me if mothers and daughters are involved. I don’t get why Taylor tries to capitalize on girlhood. It’s very creepy. If a grown man tried to capitalize on boyhood, it would be extremely odd. Like if Justin Beiber was encouraging young men to cling to their youth and trade baseball cards (something very young children do), that would be creepy also, and I’m pointing that out so the misogyny card is not thrown my way. I would rather have seen Michelle Kwan, or Tara Lipinski- two skaters that are Taylor’s age who actually experienced the transition from girl to woman skater, but they don’t get clicks. from a skating perspective, that would be more enjoyable for me than a 38 year old billionaire.
