Heal is relative. He’s in a wheelchair for the rest of the series, but he would have been dead if Naruto didn’t intervene.

Guy died in the fight when he opened the 8th gate. Naruto just showed up with a new power that let him stop Guy’s death. 8th gate is lethal 100% of the time. Naruto basically got the healing power from ninja jesus so that doesn’t count. We also see the other gates take crazy strain on Guy and Lee. Lee was ripping his body apart during the Chunin exams while Guy couldn’t even move when he opened the 7th gate.

You’re either referring to Lee’s leg injury that gets forgotten (unless Tsunade really is just that good), or Naruto’s Rasenshuriken (hurts the user’s chakra network). If you mean the Rasenshuriken, when he unlocked Sage mode, he mastered throwing it which eliminated the drawback.

For all we know, Gear 2 IS shortening his lifespan when he uses it. Same with the emergency surgery Ivankov did. But no one said he was going to keel over in the immediate future. Maybe Luffy will die at 40. Or 30. Who knows?

At this point I figure that Gear 2nd is shortening his life span dramatically, >!but Gear 5th turned him into the Sun God which fixed the damage!<. It explains why the Gum-Gum fruit isn't well known, its killed off people who get to Gear 2 and think "probably not safe to push on".

I get the funny sense that the dried out husk-look that Luffy gets after coming down from Gear 5 isn’t just going to be cartoon physics that he bounces back from after eating. That is, the series will end with him dying young because all of that power has strained his body.

The entire point of the series is Luffy becoming the Pirate King because “that’s the person with the most freedom”. I don’t think it ends bittersweetly with Luffy not getting to enjoy that freedom. Exhausted Luffy smells like a setup, there’s some secret top 5% of power left in the >!Nika fruit that he’ll get so he can beat Imu!<, the husk is an indicator that he hasn't mastered it yet.

Except Luffy doesn’t care about the government. Or other people’s freedom unless theyre people he likes specifically. This is a guy who ran into a slave shop, saw they didn’t have the mermaid he was looking for and left to never think about it again. Luffy would **hate** being a symbol of peace, compared to getting to enjoy that peace.

Kaioken is not lethal, well, not necessarily. As it’s always stated, it hurts like hell, and it CAN kill but only if you push beyond what you can take. Goku did, but only to the point where he knew he still could survive

He utilized it in very tactical ways where the immediate output is quickly released so he isn’t instantly killed. x4 is the most clear example. He was already firing the Kamehameha, so the increase went straight to the beam. x20 was similar. Either way, Goku was almost completely fried after both usages.

“Cast from lifespan” just goes completely unaddressed in 95% of manga. It’s there to raise false stakes with no actual cost to the character in the story. Only in Berserk (visible weakening) and in Chainsaw Man (where there’s quite a bit of angsting about a character expiring within 1-2 years due to his powers) come to mind in doing it well.

I mean, they never forget that Kaioken is dangerous, Goku was close to killing himself with it on Namek. It just got replaced by a stronger less dangerous transformation

I mean Guts gets visibly emancipated after using it several times. In the most recent arc he even struggles to hold onto his sword when training with it.
