Recent news surrounding injuries to the hamate bone has captured significant attention, particularly within the context of Major League Baseball (MLB). A surge in search interest can be attributed to multiple high-profile players suffering from hamate bone injuries, which are relatively common yet impactful for athletes, especially baseball players who rely heavily on grip strength for batting.

Reports such as those from MLB.com and MASN Sports detail specific cases, including a significant injury affecting a player named Holliday, who is set to start the season on the injured list due to a broken hamate bone. Such developments inherently increase curiosity among fans and analysts alike regarding the nature of these injuries and their implications for players’ performance and team dynamics.

Additionally, the news about New York Mets’ Francisco Lindor undergoing hamate bone surgery further amplifies interest. As prominent athletes undergo surgical procedures, it raises questions about recovery times, potential risks for teams, and how these injuries can affect player availability throughout the season.

With various players experiencing these injuries and receiving media coverage, there has been a correlating rise in public interest, leading to over 20,000 searches related to the term “hamate bone.” The frequency of these injuries highlighted in the news directly contributes to the elevated search volume.

It’s been ages since I checked that sub out and boy am I glad it has a giant banner that says “MLB SUBREDDIT” or I could have confused it for MySpace or 4chan or something else.

Disgusting. I wish there was a map of active circlejerks in my area, so I know which places to avoid. I’d even pay for it!

They’re all within the same height range too so it’s weird they didn’t have the right position
F
Flat_Temporary_8874 • 92 points
My guess they just used to call it a broken hand but now they’re e being more specific on what bone is broken and it turns out it’s usually the hamate bone. Total guess though
R

Nah Griffey had this injury back in 96. https://www.spokesman.com/stories/1996/jun/20/griffey-breaks-hand-tiny-hamate-bone-will-be/

If breaking your hamate is cool, consider me Miles Davis.

Some pitchers weren’t utilizing the time to work on control it seems… I’m joking but would not be surprised at the same time if it was an errant inside throw
S

That’s not how that bone breaks
B
butterybuns420 • 28 points
Mark Texiera and Andrew Benintendi both broke that bone from HBP’s
W

S

Yeah, I guess I should say not usually how it breaks
N
Nomahs_Bettah • 7 points
My partner broke his breaking up a bar brawl so let’s hope that’s not the usual case.

Yeah I was thinking of Jansen from a few years and got that bone mixed up with another in the wrist: https://www.mlb.com/news/danny-jansen-fractures-pisiform-bone-in-right-wrist

I don’t think Lindor’s is broken, just sore. But I could be wrong
B
BillW87 • 12 points
Yeah Lindor’s is a stress reaction, which is a chronic overuse injury rather than a result of getting HBP. It can acutely progress to a fracture due to ongoing use, but that doesn’t require getting hit by a ball to happen.

Look into Axe bats, there’s a company actively trying to prevent this
F

It’s a pretty common injury for a hitter. We’ve been lucky in recent years to not have seen very many.

Hamate Bone surgery so hot rn
C

They say hamate is the new UCL.
A
avds_wisp_tech • 47 points
If only the recovery from TJ was anywhere near as quick as recovering from hamate surgery is.
T
Thedurtysanchez • 51 points
You say that, but hamate bone fractures are notorious for sapping power and some hitters never fully recover.
S
SeeYaLaterDylan • 24 points
I was going to say, wrists and hands are as scary as anything at the start of a season. You come back quicker but you’re almost universally not the same as a hitter.
S
SoKrat3s • 6 points
I was listening to Chris Towers (CBS fantasy baseball) yesterday and he said that he’d looked into the medical research on it and it’s not as drastic as the narrative is. Wish he shared what he was looking at tho.
I
IllusionOf_Integrity • 3 points
Don’t they just remove the hamate bone entirely these days?
G
GasGlittering7521 • 3 points
Weird cause Francisco Alvarez came back from a broken hamate last year and after a little while back he looked better than he ever had at the plate. Maybe cause he’s young idk
C

Bones out for Hamate 🙁
