The trending topic of “discord age verification” has gained significant search interest due to Discord’s recent announcement regarding a new requirement for age verification. The platform will soon mandate that all users complete age verification through methods such as face scans or ID submission. This development directly impacts users’ access to the service, which has likely spurred many to seek out more information about the implications of these changes.

As reported by 9to5Mac, users who do not comply with the age verification process may face restrictions on their Discord usage. This has led to heightened concern and curiosity among users, prompting them to search for details on what will happen if they fail to verify their age and how this might affect their account and access to specific features.

Additionally, the article from PC Gamer delves into the consequences of not completing the age verification, further fueling interest in the topic. As details of these requirements and potential outcomes circulate, users are actively searching for answers to better understand their options and obligations within the platform.

This measure will likely cause many people to uninstall Discord and look for other alternatives, I don’t know why they feel the need to do this, Especially regarding the implications of these data leaks

Let’s be real here. The pretense of “F-f-for the children!” is paper thin at best. This is just one of many steps into digital surveillance and gross overreach that are going to be taken in the near future as the Technocrats and Governments around the world realize how much they can get from us. Privacy is vanishing before our very eyes. God, I hate to sound like a tinfoil-hatter but it’s becoming impossible to ignore just how much we’re being surveilled in our daily lives. There is no space that they will not try to take. Even if I were to pretend they were sincere about PROTECT THE KIDS it still isn’t the job of the Government or any Corporation to do so. That’s what their parents are for. It isn’t anyone else’s fault that Deborah threw an iPad at her 9 year old to shut them up. That’s her failure and her responsibility.

>God, I hate to sound like a tinfoil-hatter We got Amazon out here proudly running Super Bowl ads about how they built the panopticon, so I don’t think anyone needs to worry about sounding alarmist at this point.

My dad has a ring camera *inside* his house. I can only imagine the number of other people who do as well. This is straight up nightmare fuel letting a third party have access to the inside of your house possibly, viewing you doing whatever adult things you do in there, let alone the fucking *children* they’ll have access to through this means.

Amazon also submitted a patent for the “wagecage”, which while the “intended use” makes sense to protect associates in areas of high bot activity, you have to ask the question of “why is it that this thing was locked from the outside?”
X
Xijit • 30 points
Jesus fuck, how is that a real thing?
S
sonsofdurthu • 70 points
I think it’s because the early robots they used didnt really recognize people and was mostly working with guides (I work with a model that uses LiDAR to recognize obstacles and people and move around them), and people were getting injured when they had to do something like go pick up something that fell off the bots. Instead of turning off the area for a minute (God forbid production is halted for a nanosecond) they designed something to “protect the associate”. Still does not explain why they put the locks on the outside…
N
Norseman901 • 30 points
Ik why they put the locks on the outside. Ever heard of the triangle shirtwaist fire?
S
sonsofdurthu • 19 points
Building fire where the fire exits were locked right? I can understand it being able to be opened from the outside of the cage, but these could ONLY be opened from the outside. Almost the same conditions where the employee wouldn’t be able to escape

I can speak to this. Granted I left in 2020. Worked in OPs Tech IT. The Kiva robots used cameras to read QR codes on the floor and then communicate over WiFI to the Kiva system. The system tracks robots and Pick/Stow Shelves on the Kiva floor. So if you order a brush off of Amazon, the system knows it’s in Pick/Stow POD 12345 which is at the QR location 54321 and sends the robot to pick up the POD and bring it to a station to get get picked, knowing which face to rotate. The KIVA floors are massive and while the try their best to not run into stuff the technology just wasn’t very good like you imagine. If a robot lost connection it would come to a stop and remain stopped until someone came to fix it. You do not want a robot to restart and think it’s somewhere it isn’t and continue on a path. Even the small ones are powerful enough to carry a ton of weight, crash through fences, etc. The larger ones can probably easily carry a car around. So for safety, LOTS of things will stop a bot. Now if you need to go out onto the floor you use a program that allows you to virtually fence off an area. You still need a wait a bit before you move to ensure no robot is going to take your ankles out and you have to be VERY sure where you are. Imagine a 50,000 sqft area broken up into 3ft x 3ft squares and if you aren’t 100% sure where you are, a robot that weighs 500 lbs carrying a pod that weighs over 1000 lbs is going to take you out. It’s a literal maze out there. Like a cornfield except is POD and Robots. The reason this would have been locked from the outside is to prevent some idiot from jumping inside it and taking it for a joy ride on the floor. You cannot even get onto the kiva floor without the app, permissions, etc. I guess you COULD but the gates to get in will alarm if you don’t have permissions and shut down the whole floor. So that means this wage cage would have to be stored somewhere on the kiva floor. It would have been used by operations to go pick up items on the floor. Also each station on the KIVA floor has an e-stop and each e-stop has a heartbeat to the main network and if it goes down or lags out it will shutdown the whole floor. As far as I know, they were never actually created or used.

I saw that shit too and was floored. I had heard rumblings of these kinds of devices or other mesh networks potentially being used for nefarious reasons. To all but say that during the most watched event in the country is… Quite brazen. Though there are people in this country who openly defend pedophiles and try to rationalize facism. Its likely it flew so far over their heads they’d think it was aliens first.

in 2018 the city I grew up in charged and convicted more people in the first 5 months of the year than in any single year in history and the town celebrated it as “tough on crime.” The catch? Violent crime as well as all crime in general were at all time lows. But the fewer people being sent to prison isn’t seen as a good thing. Lower crime rates don’t me people are committing fewer crimes, it just means the government has gotten soft, apparently. Don’t for one second think this is about protecting kids. It’s about creating a boogey man to justify extreme measures to erode freedom.

Keraunos01 • 186 points
It should be on the parents to learn parental controls imo, I also hate how everytime you disagree with these rules people just go “why do you want to talk to kids man?” it comes off as such grandstanding and self righteous.
M
Many-Waters • 152 points
There are so many points of failure with it, too. The choice to let your kids use the internet, then the choice to not use parental controls, the choice to not monitor what they’re doing/check on them etc. All of that is the responsibility of the parent. No one else. I’m in my early 30s and I don’t want to deal with kids online. At all. I also don’t want my spaces being kiddie-padded in case of some hypothetical 10 year old. Those replies are all disingenuous anyway.

Agreed I just wanta play dumb games with my other adult friends but uploading my ID with my address and date of birth to the internet where a know leak has already happened is to risky… Protect the kids via putting the adults in danger lol

Yea thats a feature not a bug. Its the same as saying “cant come in today – family issues”. They kno anyone who is willing to challenge this will just sound like they don’t care about kids.

I heard no politician ever screaming to start an international pedo take down institution and fund them with billions. Or throw that kind of money to interpol Easy to say it’s for the kids. If you are against this insanity you are protecting pedos and got something to hide. Insane all of this

The pretense „for the children“ is not only thin but a joke when a whole western country apparently is run by pedophiles while they ask the peasants to „show their papers“.
S

If they actually cared about the children they would take quicker action on the accounts and servers that share csam. They are notoriously bad for this

My weather app now requires constant location permission just to display the local weather. The same local weather it had no problem displaying for decades with just an occasional check to see generally where I am. The blatant lies are so infuriating

I don’t disagree with you that privacy is evaporating and the world is becoming very dystopian. But IMO the much more realistic reason for this is just…. money. It’s a liability for Discord to not age verify, they don’t want to risk losing the money in a suit, so they are implementing this “safety feature” to cover their own asses despite the fact that it will make kids LESS safe. Kids who don’t get around the age check are going to be shuttled off to sketchier parts of the Internet that DONT follow the rules: obscure chat rooms, omegle, places with more malware and less eyes. It’s the same reason why I’m against age verification for porn sites because it just pushes people to sketchier, even less legit or less ethical sources.. people may be more susceptible to extortion or identity theft or scams in these places than the more regulated sites. Will this ID and face scan stuff be used in the future to identify and track all of us? Absolutely. But I don’t think that’s why Discord is doing it. I may be wrong, though.
M
Many-Waters • 66 points
You’re right, it is just kicking the can down the road to a dimly lit and shadier place… To the detriment of literally everyone. I entered my birth year and that ought to be the end of it. That’s age verification. Not scanning my damn face. “Kids will lie!” So? Where are their parents? If someone lies, that’s on them. Not the person/entity that they lied to. As it stands, an account found to be in violation of the age guidelines will be terminated and that’s how it should be.

Exactly all about state control I will be deleting my discord account if I cannot use the various mod servers for the games I play without doing this age verification bullshit. Why should I give my details to third party companies who have been hacked before and use it for profits and AI they can sod off not doing that. Same with OSA in UK I couldn’t even read some news sites on Reddit because of these stupid intrusive age verification crap. I refuse to do any of it I got a VPN

It is actually covered in “know your customer” they are forcing discord to be more like a store front business.

The home secretary in the UK recently said she viewed her role is to “achieve, by means of AI and technology, what Jeremy Bentham tried to do with his panopticon” There is no hiding it, this is a labor (democrat for US people) calling for a country wide surveillance system. She also used the age old if you aren’t a criminal why do you care…

The number of people i know that do this is alarming. Giving a child a smart phone or a tblet woth unrestricted access to anything and everything. Its no wonder kids and young teens get groomed online, theure not educated on what yo look for or how to be careful when online. Im of the opinion no kid should have these devices, at the very least have them without tight patental controls. But i agree with this statement, its all just a continued overreach into our lives. Further means of controlling people and selling our data off. Protectong the kids starts at home. Parents need to be knowledgable about all this stuff, no excuses.

For real, literally what is the point of nitro? Oh I can send large files!?!?!? I can do that by just slapping them on mega or MediaFire. The idea that people actually pay for that trash blows my mind.
