Just remember that it was surely a freak thing. A classmate’s brother died during a tonsillectomy a week before I was set to get mine out – same doctor and everything. He reassured my folks that it was a freak occurrence and not to be expected in my case at all. Mine ended up going completely as expected.

Skill is a bigger component in surgical success rate than just pure occasional negligence. The bad docs stay bad, the good docs stay good. Data like this is tracked. You get a lot of pushback in this realm. For example if you are a cardiologist and your patient throws a clot (has a stroke) following their procedure, that’s tracked. The cardiologists are super overbearing (“iT cOuLd bE sEdAtIoN wEaRiNg oFf’) when you want to call the stroke team to assess, because it dings them permanently.

Before I was born, my parents traveled through South America. While in Peru, they had the chance to take a small plane over the mountains. Id love to think that I have a hell of a set of balls, but I also didn’t know until afterward that the guy who died in surgery did so under the same doctor. Honestly, I’m not sure if it’d made a difference to me. He was very experienced and a well-respected ENT doc. It’s not like he was known as The Butcher of Iowa or anything like that. Oh and if I were to die young, I could think of a whole slew of worse ways than doing so while out cold in the middle of surgery.

Reading all the list of complications, to parents, before getting their signatures on consent forms for their kids’ surgery was always tough because the last complication listed was always “and the possibility of death.”

I had 2 very minor surgeries when I was 2 or so that could very well have been done in the same operation. My dad always says it was some of the scariest couple hours of his life. Never understood why until reading this.

to try and provide a positive counter example, i think i’ve gone down for surgery about 8 or 9 times in my life at this point and i’ve never had even close to a complication. just listen to your surgeon and anaesthetist when it comes to pre-surgery prep and you’ll absolutely nail that shit, don’t worry! also a personal word of advice, don’t twist yourself in knots over the stuff they HAVE to read you when you sign consent forms. they have to cover every base, even down to things with a likelihood of happening in the fractions of a percent.

There’s also a pre surgery checklist you can go over with your primary care physician regarding EKGs, blood work, etc to make sure you’re ok. People with underlying heart issues need to be treated differently. Not sure what happened with Gore but my surgeon sent over tests which is mainly for people over 40 but I’ll probably do it anyways since I haven’t been to the doc in a while.

While freak occurances like this are scary, it’s good to remember that you were FAR more likely to die during your commute to work yesterday than you are during your surgery. General anesthesia has a mortality rate of 1 in ~200,000. But that figure includes complex procedures. Simple elective procedures are likely even lower risk. A typical year of driving carries a 1 in ~10,000 risk of death. Even a single freeway drive is probably more dangerous than general anesthesia. Many, many people you know have commuted 200+ days per year for decades. You will be just fine under anesthesia.

I had surgery 2 weeks ago, it was my sixth so far and it was smooth sailing. Be honest with your doctors in what you take/consume. Follow the instructions and listen to your body post surgery. Good luck and I wish you a speedy recovery ❤️🩹

You’ll be okay dude! Very normal to feel anxious. I’ve been an OR nurse for 7 years and I’ve been on thousands of routine procedures. I’ve never seen someone even come close to dying. Traumas and major surgeries are another story, of course, but don’t sweat it. You’ll be okay.

This is why I get annoyed when fans say things like “he should have just gotten the surgery” when a player tries to manage a condition conservatively. Going under anesthesia is terrifying. It’s not just some routine thing you do for funsies. You can die. I do not begrudge anyone for doing everything that they can and exploring every option before opting to go under the knife.

Had my first two surgeries in January. Tibial Plateau Fracture repair. The first surgery (stabilization) wasn’t really anything, went to sleep and then woke back up. The second (ORIF) was the one that I got into my head over. Didn’t help that I had nothing else to do but lay there and think about it for days before the procedure. Was on the verge of a panic attack when they wheeled my through those doors and I was suddenly in the same room I’ve seen all those people die in over the years in various medical dramas. And then I was waking up! It’s crazy how it works. Now I just have to navigate being out of work for months with no financial assistance because Texas sucks! Dying on the OR table seems preferable.
