The US team was cheered very loudly upon entrance. The camera then planned to Vance shortly and that led to quite loud booing Vance. Once he was off the screen the boos stopped.

While the cauldrons are spectacular looking, I thought the lighting of each was underwhelming. Usually that’s the most dramatic, goosebumps-inspiring moment of the Opening Ceremonies but today’s seemed to lack the buildup and drama we usually see. Maybe I’m spoiled by Ali in Atlanta 1996 or the bulls-eye arrow shot in Barcelona 92 or the gymnast seeming to walk on air Beijing 08.

You also just named 3 summer games. Winter games are always more muted – it’s a smaller event, the budgets are lower, the viewership is lower, and the ceremonies often reflect the season which is less of a time for flamboyance than the bright hot summer.

Maybe, but Vancouver 2010, while experiencing some technical difficulties, was very cool compared to this. The Vancouver harbour torch and 3 crossed torches at the main stadium were very cool imo

Wait really? The winter Olympics get less viewership? I love the winter Olympics and find absolutely nothing about the summer Olympics entertaining. Around here (NY) most people I know only watch the winter Olympics. I guess I learned something new today because that one surprised me.

Most African countries don’t even have a team and most other countries in the Carribean, Central or South America have either a very small team or none at all. Of course the viewership is going to be way lower.

In some places, like Canada and the Nordic countries, the viewership is higher or the same as the Summer Olympics. However, in many other places, the viewership is much lower, and a lot of countries don’t even have a broadcast partner for the Winter Games, even though they may have one for the Summer Games.
