Well, most of the Tri-State Mining District is outside of Kansas, but not all. There’s a bit of it in Kansas known as the Cherokee County Superfund site. Back in the day, I worked a joint venture between the KDHE & EPA monitoring remediation compliance that took me down that way. The piles around Baxter Springs & Galena are really quite beautiful. There are definitely hills in that corner of Kansas. Mount Sunflower, the highest point in Kansas, is included in that northwest corner. Monument Rocks, Little Jerusalem Badlands S.P., and Lake Scott S.P. are all near the bottom of that square too.

Mt Sunflower is the highest point in Kansas, not because it’s a formidable peak, but because it’s a very slight bump near the border of Colorado, on a portion of Kansas that is on a flattish (gradually inclining) plain.

Kansas used to include eastern Colorado. And Denver. Mr. Denver was an early governor of … duh … Kansas. The territory, before it became one-and-a-half states. We gave away eastern Colorado because even without it, we still had way too much Twilight Zone.

I was out there last summer. There’s definitely rolling hills. Not quite as dramatic as like the Flint Hills further east, but definitely what you’d call “undulating”.

The whole western half of Kansas is what passes for a peak. State is slanted (I mean besides its unfortunate politics) in that it’s flattish, but as you go west, you keep climbing in altitude.

The Arikaree Breaks area in the far northwestern corner of the state is maybe the rockiest, most hilly part of Kansas.

I remember back in grade school being confused when my history teacher said it was hard for pioneers to find lumbar to build houses on the plains, since every hill around us was so densely populated with them. I didn’t realize how drastically the flora changed once you got out of the Missouri river basin.

Old growth forests in the Midwest only date back about 150 years, though some trees like the Burr Oak have been here for 300-400 years. Only 5% of Missouris forest are considered old growth. So around the time of western expansion most of the Midwest would have been open grassland like central Kansas. 95% of the trees you see today weren’t here when pioneers moved west and if they were they would have been saplings.

These two corners are opposite ends of Kansas’ precipitation (more in SE) and elevation (high plains in the west) gradients which results in pretty big differences in the kinds of plants that that live in each (in addition to geological differences affecting soil). There are quite a few plants commonly found in the eastern US that only show up in Kansas’ SE corner.

West Kansas as a whole is much dryer than east Kansas. You can look at Google Maps on Satellite mode and see the line where the state goes from green to brown somewhere around the I-35/I-135 corridor.
