Under center play action is back in Baltimore!!

Just to give people a quick idea how huge getting a play-action centric OC is going to be: The Ravens under Monken averaged a ~~16.9%~~ 20.6% play-action rate, good for about 12th in the league. The top five offenses this year in points scored – Rams, Pats, Seahawks, Bills, Lions – were at 35.5%, 23.5%, 27.3%, 29.5%, and 28.9%. Look last year and you see a similar story, play-action is a deadly weapon, and using it at a rate that far below the top-scoring offenses when you have the #2 offense in rush yards and #1 in yards per rush is vexing. Doyle’s Bears offense, which ranked #9 in yards per play and points per game, sat at a 33.1% play-action rate, and in Baltimore he is going to have, with all due respect to a good season by Caleb and Swift and Monangai, a superior ground game and a superior field general; 1936 rush yards between Henry and Mitchell, 1870 between Swift and Monangai, once you control for games missed due to injuries, Lamar outdoes Caleb on TD rate, success rate, net yards per throw, on-target %, and bad throw %, despite this being a “down” year for Lamar and a banner year for Caleb. Doyle was my favorite pick for Jesse’s OC and I am pumped about this. Henry faced the second-highest rate of stacked boxes in the league, and a healthy Lamar is going to amplify that even further. There are few better options if you want to punish every single defense trying to load the box. Edit: Forgot to include Detroit’s play-action rate lol Edit #2: Initial post was on my phone before leaving work, miscalculated the Ravens play-action rate by a few percentage points. “Doyle’s bears offense” it’s hard to tell what you’re gonna get with him. He spent way more time under Sean Payton who runs significantly less play action and has way more shotgun than Ben Johnson.

Lions fan who randomly got lost here. Dan Campbell was the AHC under Payton. He promoted Johnson to OC and helped craft him into the play called he is today. You know how much PA the Lions run, so it might have been more of a personnel thing in Chi. Lamar and Henry are on a completely different level than Caleb and Swift. All in all, i think it’s a fantastic hire for y’all. Obligatory Fuck the Steelers

Where are you getting these stats? Not doubting them, just curious so I can see and play around with the numbers too. In any case, I’d like to see if they track RPO stats too – I know in some seasons, our PA rates are low, but mostly because we run a lot of RPO instead. Also curious if play action rate is calculated out of all offensive plays, or just passing plays – we are a run heavy team so any subset of passing plays will be a lower percentage of all offensive plays, if that is how it is calculated. Btw I do also agree we don’t run enough PA. Especially this past year with Lamar injured and ignored by defenders who just beelined to Henry.

PFR doesn’t list play-action rate, but they *do* list total pass attempts and total play-action attempts, and getting the percentages from that is easy math. – Rams: 598/212 – Patriots: 502/118 – Seahawks: 481/131 – Bills: 495/146 – Lions: 582/168 I actually owe you a thank-you for getting me to double-check my math, while all five of those check out, in a rush to do it on my phone before driving home from work I fat fingered the math for the Ravens play-action rate, and after re-running everything, the actual rate under Monken was 20.6%, with 1393 pass attempts, 287 of which were play-action passes. That said, while a 3.7% increase is nowhere near as bad a case of coaching malpractice as I thought, and getting north of 20% is very good, I’d still argue it’s lower than it should’ve been given the dominance on-display from the Ravens run game the past few years given the disparity with the league’s top offenses; if you look at the league’s top-five offenses the last three years and take out the 2024 and 2023 Ravens so we’re not competing against ourselves, 20.6% would outdo only the 2024 Bills and 2023 Cowboys. > In any case, I’d like to see if they track RPO stats too – I know in some seasons, our PA rates are low, but mostly because we run a lot of RPO instead. They do track RPOs, and that is an excellent point I had not thought about; under Monken, the Ravens ran 323 RPOs across three years, and if we treat those as play-action plays and add those to our total, it *does* jump to 48.8%. If we do that for the other five teams we’re looking at – Rams, Pats, Seahawks, Bills, Lions, Bears – then only three of them end up north of 40% alongside the Ravens, with LA’s 40.8%, Buffalo’s 45.5%, and Chicago’s 43%. That said, now I’m wondering if any of these combined rates are double-counting; Where is the line between what PFR considers a quick-hitting play-action pass and an RPO where the QB decides to throw? Both are using the threat of what appears to be a handoff to generate separation. Do any plays get counted as both? Just passing plays. This is also why I did play-action percentage instead of total play-action passes, the highest the Ravens have ranked under Monken in total PA attempts is 17th, but that’s because, like you said, run heavy team so fewer pass attempts overall.

I had that worry before we let Harbaugh go. Since then it’s been reassurance for me over and over that Bisciotti and co ARE willing to take risks for the betterment of the team. Which is genuinely awesome. I had real worries that we didn’t have that killer instinct anymore.

They are killing it so far with these hires.

In part, yes. Ben Johnson is a phenomenal play caller, but the person putting together the gameplan, sequencing plays, creating the general course of action for the offense each week, etc. was Doyle. The only thing he didn’t do is call it in real time.

I’ve been doing a huge deep dive on the guy since I saw we were interviewing him. I think he’s the next Shanahan/McVay/Johnson. Unbelievably intelligent. I just hope he sticks around a few seasons before taking a HC job.

The good thing is, at the absolute minimum worst case scenario, Lamar is good enough to bail out bad play calling better than almost any player in the league, when healthy. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that, but Lamar Voodoo Magic is the floor.
