Seriously though, how do you not kick it there when you have a backup QB, and a chance to go up 10 in the first half? And if you do go for it, at least come up with a better play call. That decision will haunt him.

Vrabel did the exact same thing. The difference was that his backup QB didn’t throw it into the dirt on fourth down. Far more costly was the strip sack/fumble by Stidham inside the 10. Without that, the Broncos win 7-3. Stidham also threw a pick and Maye didn’t. Not tough to figure out, the Broncos lost because they didn’t have their starting QB and the backup wasn’t great. They get the rest of Wilson’s $53 million of dead cap money back next year, have re-signed all their most critical players, and Nix will be another year more experienced and (hopefully) healthier. No coach has ever even made the playoffs while missing 20% of their salary cap. It did happen one other time though – when Payton did it with the Saints. The Broncos get to do run it back with all that and with one of only 8 coaches to have more than 17 years of NFL coaching experience. Payton is also one of just 6 guys with at least 10 years of experience to never be fired as an NFL head coach (if you don’t count Tom Landry who was sort of angrily not renewed). Disappointing loss, but it was expected given the QB. Lots to look forward to for the Broncos next year.

Hate to agree with Romo but it was so dumb of Payton to go for it in the 2nd quarter with a chance to go up 10. Your QB is incredibly unproven and your defense is absolutely dealing. Take those points when you can get em.
M
meatball-monkey • 700 points
Yeah and he burned a timeout before that play so he can’t call another timeout after they lined up. Total fuckup by the coach plain and simple
T
tigerking615 • 227 points
At that point, it was probably better to just take the delay of game and kick
M
meatball-monkey • 63 points
I agree, a delay penalty with points is still better. Hopefully he realizes that. Sometimes the ref won’t let you call a second timeout, but if the coach is super adamant they’ll throw the flag
R
rangerfan123 • 14 points
There should be like 10x the delay of games than we currently get. So so many wasted timeouts instead of just taking a delay of game
G
giants707 • 18 points
I think they made two mistakes. At that distance, even if you want a timeout, why not rush into formation and run hurry-up/hard count to draw offsides? Then kick or decide to go for it (2nd mistake)
G
googly_eyed_unicorn • 3 points
I was so confused by those two decisions. I get wanting to go for the win, but sometimes you got to take what’s in front of you, especially after so many missed field goals later on and a second time out probably gives them a sliver of chance to get the ball back. I’m glad my Pats won, I was just so confused

I feel like you could say that about any number of games Sean Payton has coached over the last decade.

I get going for the kill shot and up 14 points with their defense and eventual weather would have been enough. But, you can’t call that play with a backup. Take the points man or call a better play to get the yard.
M
modern_beisbol • 23 points
Yeah, it was an atrocious playcall. Ironically, I think the game playing out the way it did actually confirms he was right to go for it, since they never sniffed the redzone again (but had two more chances for FGs).
C
CallofBootyCrackOps • 5 points
yea I don’t like defending the call to go for it, but if they do take the 3 there then the game is 10-10 when the Patriots have the ball at the end. instead of kneeling it at midfield, the pats could have kept driving and kicked a FG with no time left and the broncos lose by 3 anyways. I still would have taken the points, but people are acting like taking the points there would have guaranteed overtime just because they ended up losing by 3.
P
Pretend-Device-91 • 34 points
At least Ben Johnson is consistent when going for it
S
sloBrodanChillosevic • 61 points
As much as I would love to shit on Caleb, he’s far more capable & proven than Stiddy or whatever they call him. Therefore, I have far less of a problem with Ben Johnson going for it 8x a game than I do with that individual Payton decision.
P
Pretend-Device-91 • 43 points
Stidham does not deserve ANY nickname lmfao after that , Payton is an absolute idiot for that , however given how his kicker missed 2 field goals maybe it’s not the worst in history
O

what about Shiddy?

Yeah I’m a Sean defender but this is just a terrible decision that probably ended up being the deciding factor on why we lost
B
blueshoota • 11 points
I really liked the call, the play call not so much. It wasn’t that bad though. When it comes down to what single play was most responsible for the loss, it was definitely Stidham throwing the fumble instead of just taking a sack

Take the points!
P

I disagreed with the call at the time (and disagreed even more after the playcall – they let two rushers free but it wasn’t a screen? WTF were they doing?) but I don’t think Sean Payton knew any more than the rest of us did that the second half would turn into a swirling snow globe. Snow was not in the weather forecast as of this morning.

What a generational performance from the Broncos defense that was completely wasted because Stidham fumbled the ball to the 10 yard line
D
dickfromaccounting • 2,641 points
Stidham definitely lost us the game but so did Sean fucking Payton not kicking that field goal in the first half
A
awak6n • 973 points
I don’t hate going for it on fourth down but why was he calling a legit play instead of a sneak
H
Hobeast • 376 points
You knew the second half would be a weather induced struggle. Putting up points would have been my call but I sit on a warm couch.
T
triplec787 • 57 points
Was gonna say the same. Not planning for insane weather against a solid defense is poor coaching. You see it in soccer, motorsports, basically everything except baseball because that’ll just get PPD/called.
D
DutchingFlyman • 5 points
I don’t know what soccer you watch but here in Europe games rarely get played out with that kind of weather let alone affect coaching decisions

I hated it because they had their backup QB playing. If it was the starter I’d be fine, but with the backup I wouldn’t risk points
