All this talk abt Arsenal I don’t see anyone mention how well Man U have played the last couple matches

The penalty vs Palace was given because of a denial of a goalscoring chance. It’s not a penalty but handball rules because the arm position is natural. This has been a rule for years now, in fact it changed so it’s not an automatic red and can be a yellow (see Reece James vs Liverpool 2021/22 for an example of the old rule). Tbf I think most on here know that but it winds me up when the BBC/Sky don’t. You can argue it’s a stupid rule (handball rules are farcical tbh) but it was applied correctly.

Anyone else get really bored of people who make smug comments about fans of top clubs complaining about bad patches? Is it really difficult to understand that the issues within a top club aren’t comparable to a mid-table or bottom-table club?

It’s best to judge them on their individual merit.

Nah. Complaining about being in 5th-7th is pretty deserving of ridicule.

The thing that worried me when we signed Rice is I always thought he was quite technically limited. I’ve put it to the side the last couple years because he does everything else well, but I can’t help but feel a big part of our creative issues is his limitations in possession. I feel like 2022/23 Xhaka would be an upgrade on Rice. It’s not really much of a coincidence that our playstyle got more boring and Odegaard became less effective and has been more involved in building from deep since we lost Xhaka and got Rice in. Doesn’t help we only have like two decent forwards in the whole squad and that one of them has been meh the last year, and the other has been injured, but still. I mean you can see Rice’s weakness quite clearly if you look at how we build. Whether it was Partey or Zubi, our gk and cb’s always aim to build through either of them instead of Rice, or have Odegaard drop deep. This is in large part because Rice is very uncomfortable receiving the ball facing goal. Him being unable to play on the turn makes our buildup more predictable, and neuters odegaard forcing him to be so much more involved from deep (not that he hasn’t been underwhelming in other areas at times over the last year). And I feel like a modern dm for a top team should be able to play linebreaking passes from time to time, which you just don’t ever see from Rice. The best he can do is a switch out wide to Saka. He carries the ball nicely though, but for a modern dm his shortcomings in possession keep him a tier below the greats for me at the moment. Feel he’s getting very overrated by Prem viewers at the moment because of his nationality.

Rice is probably the best big signing we’ve made. You want him to be a player he’s not. Is zubimendi better than the rapist? No. It’s not even close. Odegaard first touch and initial movement is great, he then follows it up with a 360 pirouette and passes sideways. Plays with no intensity whatsoever. Rice isn’t a tempo setter/DLP, so why do you judge him that way? Is rice our primary initial build up player? No. So, again why judge him like one? Far worse signings made by the manager in context. Namely signing a false 9 in havertz to be a LCM and what the fuck do you know.. he’s shocking as a mid and plays well as a SS. Our squad building has had some head scratchers. Rice is by some distance the least of our issues and you’re stating a problem that doesn’t exist. Even funnier, rice has to hold zubimendis hand OOP because he’d get run over in that mid as a lone 6.

Expired-Meme • 1 points
I’m not asking Rice to be a tempo setter or whatever. I would just like him to be more comfortable at receiving the ball on the turn. I feel like this is a basic requirement of any midfielder in a top top team. Not exactly asking him to be prime Pirlo on the ball. I’m not really sure what the random Zubimendi driveby has to do with anything either.

We should be wary of cliches and narratives regarding certain players: https://www.statmuse.com/fc/ask/most-linebreaking-passes-premier-league And our midfield would be way worse with Xhaka instead of Rice.
E
Expired-Meme • 1 points
Am I blind or something. You linked me a stat which shows Rice has completed 1,197 passes this season? Is this supposed to show linebreaking passes? I don’t think he has completed almost 1200 linebreaking passes this season. edit: I think you have linked me just a pass chart. If you go to this link it shows Rice has averaged 54.4 passes per game, which adds up to 1,197 https://www.statmuse.com/fc/ask/arsenal-player-with-most-passes-per-game-this-season?l=pl

White and Rice run into the sidenetting during a corner and they still score off it.

Lammens isn’t a world class keeper or anything and he’s made a few mistakes but I feel so, so much better with him in net than I did with Onana, he’s definitely got potential to be a proper solid keeper, also relative to our usual signings he didn’t actually cost that much – very happy with him

Can’t stop laughing at how Arteta drags his players from the bench to the touchline. He almost had Eze by the neck and he was dragging Madueke by the arm like he was dragging his son to the front gate of the school.

The Napoli situation is so funny because last year Conte got a bunch of bums to massively over perform to win the league and now people are calling for him to be sacked because Napoli are “underperforming”

Why is everybody all of a sudden congratulating Carrick? It’s not like he’s won the PL title or something

it’s interesting that arsenal have probably the best bench in the league, yet their subs don’t really affect the level of the team too much (positively or negatively).

Raul Moro leaving after barely 6 months is insane but I get it, why would you invest in a player who has been shit for 6 months if they want to leave. You never hear about a player being severely homesick if the player permorms on the pitch though but maybe it’s a chicken and egg situation. I’m just glad we’re recouping most of the fee. I have the patience to see a player redeem themselves but not when the player wants to leave desperately.
K
killrdave • 1 points
May main takeaway after the dust had settled is that Arsenal will still win the league (no they’re not perfect but City have more flaws) and Madueke genuinely made me laugh, a truly terrible cameo performance
A
Asadwords • 2 points
The worst thing about the madueke is the managers moved him to the right because he can only play there and asked his better attacker to accommodate for the sub, regardless of what you think of saka he’s better than madueke Fella then dribbles the ball out of play and Cunha scores a minute later. 50M for him, I can’t even call it a flop signing because I wasn’t even expecting much in the first place.
E
Elemayowe • 1 points
I’d not really watched him much before but Madueke is a fucking fraud.

Raya never been good saving shots that come from a central position. There’s a reason why Saliba & Gabriel try to force forwards to take a shot from either the right or left angle

Portsmouth and Southampton fans are REALLY upset on social media that their derby between two bottom half second tier sides got relegated to the red button in favour of a WSL game

I was definitely surprised it wasn’t on a main channel. Don’t think the commentators were even at the ground. I’d be miffed if they did that for our game against Norwich.

Our home record has been horrifically poor and it’s gotten incredibly toxic between Frank and the home crowd. If City can’t win it’s fully on them.

A lot of people here really need reminding that football matches are played by 2 teams, not 1. Every time a Rich 6 club drops point the usual takes about how the ‘league is shit’ come out like clockwork because the possibility of more than 6 teams in the league being good is unfathomable. I imagine it’s like this for Serie A fans too
C
CritChanceZero • 8 points
‘The league is shit’ is shorthand for ‘most of the top teams are shit’ because that’s what matters in a title fight. The floor has been rising for years and you’d have to be delusional to think the average level of a Premier League team isn’t higher than ever but the top teams are still favourites in these games. We’re not looking at 95+ point seasons because of this but when only one top team turns up for a season you get shouts of a shit league because the relevant competition is worse.
P
Pervizzz • 2 points
Hard agree. Yeah, all Sky 6 clubs perform below their usual level but the midtable clubs are also undeniably good this season
T
TrevorArizaFan • 2 points
Inter have the second-biggest gap to second of any team in the big five leagues (after Bayern) despite not winning almost all of the “big games” they’ve played this season. Lost to Juve, lost/drew Napoli, and lost to Milan, in addition to losing in the Supercoppa to Bologna and the UCL to Atletico, Arsenal, and Liverpool. Beating Roma 1-0 is basically the only major result they’ve had, but they’ve been absolutely perfect against the smaller clubs and are on pace for 89 points and are 14th in the UCL table.

I was as happy as anyone when Dorgu scored his worldie, but I still don’t understand how that goal was allowed to stand. It’s clearly hit his hand and he scores immediately after. There is genuinely 0 justification by the current rules for it to be given as a goal
K
kamikuso • 1 points
Clearly hits the hand? lol
E
Elemayowe • 3 points
I genuinely think it hits his hip and he keeps his arm so close to his side that it looks illegitimate.
A
Aaronsmiff • -4 points
Yeah it’s a bit mad. If that doesn’t hit his arm it doesn’t drop where it does and allow him to run onto it to shoot. People get too hung up on the “arms by his side” rule sometimes, but the conversation should be more focused on what happens if it doesn’t touch the arm/hand.
K
killrdave • 6 points
In none of the the angles I saw did it absolutely, conclusively hit his hand, though it likely did in reality. Morally and spiritually anyone who thinks it should be chalked off for an incidental glance off a hand by his side before a worldie like that is not trustworthy
P
Pele20Alli • -3 points
I never said I liked the rule and agreed with it morally and spiritually. However, it doesn’t matter what you or me or anyone else thinks. The rule is the rule, you can’t just pick and choose when it applies, otherwise why can’t refs pick and choose when to follow/not follow every other rule all the time? It’s quite clear and obvious in every slo mo replay it brushes off Dorgu’s arm tbh
D
D1794 • 3 points
If his arm was higher and not next to his body and it his his arm, the call would be ‘unnatural position’
P
Pele20Alli • -2 points
Scoring from a handball doesn’t take into account natural or unnatural position, or even if it’s against your body. If it touches your hand/arm and you score directly from that, it should not be a goal. It is a very clear cut rule with no room for interpretation in situations like this
D
D1794 • 3 points
Thank god logic was chosen over that rule then
P
Pele20Alli • -3 points
Sorry, but that’s just nonsense. Just because you think the rule is shit doesn’t justify the refs blatantly ignoring the rules
B
BigJayOsama • 6 points
I’m an Arsenal fan, but even chalking off a goal that great would fuck me off. Absolute worldie of a finish. Have that.
