I still believe One Battle After Another has the win in the bag, but I admit the amount of noms Sinners got makes me consider the possibility of a PTA director win and then Sinners gets BP.. But then I remember Sinners is horror and the Academy are not that cool.

Fun fact: this is the first time in the preferential era that 4 separate distributors got two of their films into the lineup. (Warner Bros, Netflix, Focus Features, and Neon.) The closest this has come to happening in the past was 2011, where WB, Searchlight, and Disney each had two films in, while two separate distribution arms within Sony Pictures (Classics + Releasing) each had one.

There’s a lot of layers to it. Slavery, racism, capitalism, universality of music, acceptance and grief. It’s also a really fun vampire movie.

I have thoughts: \- Not suprised it missed out in Best Picture, but I am suprised Wicked didn’t get any BTL nominations, especially Make Up and Costumes. \- Very pleased the doubters were wrong and Ethan Hawke did get that Best Actor nomination. \- Also very pleased for Rose, Inga and Renate. \- Not as suprised as some that F1 got that 10th Best Picture nomination. Yes it wasn’t perfect, but I had the most fun watching of it all the 2025 contenders and I wonder if the Academy felt similarly. \- Once I’ve finally watched The Secret Agent when it comes out here next month, this will be the second year I’ll have managed to see all the Best Picture nominations.

I think the Avatar costume nomination is really cool and very innovative. People have been asking for motion capture performances to get recognized but when motion capture art/designs get recognized all hell breaks loose.
