Serious question, why do jousters travel along the “right” side of the separating barrier and have the lance be further from their enemy instead of both of them being on the “left” side with the lances closer together? I never understood that. Seems like the hits would be more effective.

Physically speaking, I’d imagine it would allow you to take a hit at an angle and absorb it, as opposed to it being linear, straight back. If I were to do this myself on foot against an opponent, I’d use a shield in my left hand to hopefully absorb part of the hit, and use my strong arm to hold the lance. If my lance hits, the force would push my right shoulder back, but I’m leaning forward and to the left, so hopefully I just end up facing straight ahead. If I did it the opposite way, I’d be leaning forward and aiming to the right, so when the shock hits me, it’s going to be straight back, and probably takes me off the horse more easily.

Ok two theories we’ve just come up with. 1. It’s easier to pivot and aim the lance into the opponent. 2. The blow back is ‘safer’ because it can glance off your body/you can fall into the open rather than getting stuck between horse, lance and barrier if your lance is on the inside

You want your shield closest to your opponent to try to deflect the blow so you don’t get unhorsed. Most people are right handed, so they want the lance in their right hand so they can aim better. With the shield in the left land, that means you want your opponent on your left

This is stadium highschool in Tacoma Washington if ever driving between Seattle and Portland you can pull off the freeway and see all the filming locations for this movie

This was the first movie I saw him in. And like every other girl my age, I went from watching it for JGL to being “WHO IS THIS FINE MAN?!”, he just stole that movie and you can tell he was such a charismatic guy.

I remember thinking it strained belief that Heath Ledger (who looked 30) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who looked 12) would be students at high school at the same time, only to look them up and find that JGL was less than 2 years younger than him. Then I remembered that high school really is like that.
